I do not get the Kelly to ND hysteria.

Many people thought we would get way torqued once Chahlie got his new offensive juggernaut a-rollin' in SB.

Alternatively, as a great american put it, I only talk about folks that coach Michigan....

The only two that would truly scare me are Urban Meyer and Chris Petersen. And I would almost think I had died and gone to heaven if they took Gruden. Gruden pisses off so many people that he would make Weis look like an overachiever.

The internet is a double-edged sword, and it would probably take Gruden about a year to get a rep as a coach nobody wants to play for. Thanks to the internet, this would spread to most recruits and their coaches quickly enough to make recruiting extremely difficult.

Hiring Gruden would guarantee that the ND program is toast for five years.

Oh, and I almost forgot to mention that when Gruden is in charge of personnel, as he would be as a college HC, he is terrible. Gruden is pretty much a step above Matt Millen as a personnel evaluator and assimilator, at least on a pro level.

Gruden to ND would be the best possible news I could hear this year except a UM victory over OSU.

Anyway, I don't see anything about Weis leaving in the MSM yet, so it's all conjecture at this point. But is sure is fun.

well...urban runs the exact offense that rr taught him. if rr had inherited all that ron zook-recruited talent...and got going right away...in a state/region with that kind of talent...i think that he could have won as many nc's as urban already.

think back to 2 years back when Michigan got RR. Kelly is also a spread guy who has similar credentials as RR. I think it would take ND 3-4 years to become a powerhouse again under Kelly, and their fans are even more pi**es off than ours, so I don't know if he would last that long at ND.

Gotta say if we want to be respected across the nation we have to hope that teams that we play regularly get better. Beating ND in '07 when they went 3-9 did preceisly nothing for our national perpsective. Now on the contrary if they were to beat USC and then we beat them then look out BCS. Now that is assuming that we get a whole lot better than we are now but if they do get someone like Stoops or Kelley and we beat them we should start to get the respect nationally that we know that we deserve.

brian kelly does not scare me. nd has a damn good offense under weis/ their problem is their defense, just like us, brian kellys defense just gave up around 40 to uconn. thats why i don't get u-m fans talk about wanting kelly. he and rr are very similiar, and he would not solve our defensive problem.

Bleacher Report has also learned that Oklahoma's Bob Stoops will be considered for the position.

Part of me thinks that Stoops would never ever go for this, but hey, they're Notre Dame, right? I mean who wouldn't want to go there? Especially if they have a great thing going elsewhere. Stoops was just as likely to come here. Notre Dame would be of the mentality that they can get any coach any time. Pricks...

It very well may happen (and I don't blame them), he has been nothing but average with all those great recruits so far. But why would Bob Stoops want to go there? Unless they offer him a hell of a lot more than he's already making at Oklahoma (he's the 4th highest paid coach anyway) why would he want to go there? Oklahoma is a pretty well known (for cheating in the 80s that is) and prestigious school, and I'm sure the city of Norman is a lot better than South Bend in general.

I don't see Kelly ending up at a school where they will monitor him like a hawk. Kelly is a brash foul-mouthed individual. ND only lets Jabba get away with it because he is an alum.

My guess is he takes a smaller step and ends up at Colorado, Virginia or Washington State.

This obviously isn't an "official" announcement...yet. But like political leaks, I think this is just to test the waters and see what reaction would be.

Either way, it doesn't matter who they hire if Weiss is let go. There is no silver bullet of coaches out there, despite what many of the FireRRNow crowd think.

Brian Kelly talk is beyond annoying. It reminds me of 2007 talk about a certain spread guru out of West Virginia.

People who are terrified of Kelly need to get a grip.

Every year, the new, hot, young coach from said lesser conference is going to be the next Urban Meyer. Maybe, maybe not. Chill out.

I hear you, but it is interesting to me that Kelly's name has come up so soon and in the same breath from ND fans as Meyer and Stoops. in 2007 RR's name came up late (way after Miles, Ferentz, Schiano, Deboard, Hoke, etc) and without much discussion until after it happened.

"In his 13 years as head coach at Grand Valley the Lakers won five conference titles and made six Division II Playoff appearances. Grand Valley State never finished lower than third in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference under Kelly."

I'm sure that he is a good coach and would improve ND or may have been a better hire than RR. Who knows?

However, if you look at RR's record and performance before Michigan, you will see similar, arguably better head coaching experience and better results (if you care, look up Brian's posts from ~ 2 years ago).

More importantly, at this Juncture, we are far better off keeping RR for another 1-2 years and see how he performs. The O is much better and the D is still young, so if they don't show significant improvement in 2 years, I'm sure Michigan will make the right decision.

Weiss has been given a solid 5 years, with a decent cupboard (Brady Quinn was a Junior), while RR got Sheridan/ Threet.

1. The very article you quote shows his two national titles in 2002 and 2003, which are more impressive than anything Rich Rodriguez has accomplished (and I'm one of his supporters, more on that later)

2. I don't think Rich's resume is much more impressive than Kelly's. Let's look at the facts here: As a D-II coach, Rich and Kelly did a similar job up until about 1999... after that, Kelly's team evolved into world beaters who went 41-2 in a 3 year stretch. After that, he took over a moribund Central team that had been decimated by DeBord's shitty recruiting and turned it into a MAC championship team within 3 years... he also recruited Dan LeFevour and his recruits have been largely responsible for Central's continued success over the past 3 seasons. In the Big East, he came in and won 10 games immediately and won 11 the next year. Assuming he can win one more game, he'll have matched the number of 10 win seasons RichRod put up at WVU. Also, assuming he wins the Big East outright, he should end this year with as many outright Big East titles as RichRod won. In what world is any of that not just as, if not more so, impressive than RichRod's career?

3. We agree here. I was specifically telling someone who said that Brian Kelly was an unknown commodity that he was severely underestimating the guy. While I kind of wish Kelly would remain in Cincy just in case we ever need him, I'm fully committed to giving RR the time he needs because he is the guy to turn this program around.

Brian Kelly won multiple national championships at GVSU, turned CMU into a solid program in just a couple years and won the Big East with Cincy as soon as he got there.

Brian Kelly might be an A-Hole, but he's a winner. I think Notre Dame would look the other way with some of his personal issues in order to win championships.

I'm more worried about our own problems than who may or may not coach Notre Dame.

Personally, I wish we hadn't signed a long term contract to play them every year and didn't have to spend time thinking about them. Was probably a mistake teaching them the game in the first place... I'm with Bo's "We don’t need Notre Dame. They need us more than we need them."

Was Brian COOK was going to coach at ND. Apparently, some of the more progressive types there were impressed with his obvious analytic advantage that enabled him to break down game film. They figure its worth 7 points per game.
