What did We Do to the Injury Gods?
I realize football is a damn physical game and there will be injuries but fergodsakes is this year worse than usual or am I just overthinking it? A follow a few other teams relatively closely and they don't have anywhere near our damage.
Not a Hoke fan (as a FB HC) but one thing I am going to give him mad props is no excuses revolving around injuries. Same as our BB coach who just go "next man up" and keep going, as opposed to a certain coach who speaks about weird guys costing them the game.
From my list we are essentially missing a third of the team - 7 out of 22! Then a few more "walking wounded" (obviously way below 100% ...and below the normal 85-90% a lot of other players are at this point with wear and tear). And those are only the guys we know about
On defense
Starter:
- D. Morgan - a starter* (*lemon)
- J. Peppers
- D. Hill
- W. Henry
That is 4 starters*
Also on and off this year ("walking wounded") are
- R. Taylor
- J. Wilson
On offense
Starter:
- E. Magnuson
- J. Chesson
- D. Green
Walking wounded:
- D. Funchess
- D. Gardner
Not a starter:
- K. Hill
- S. Morris
And any number of guys with the normal nicks and bruises and more serious things that every team plays with.
For a team that already has issues this sure is not helping things. I get losing 2-3 guys, long term but fergodsakes what have we done to displease the injury gods. 4 injuries in this past week alone? Cripes.
This bye is much needed and it sure would be nice if said football gods would grant us a player or three back after the break.

It's getting to the point where it can't be attributed to bad luck.

I believe that we are about to become the target of a systematic process of intimidation and manipulation, the likes of which you have never seen.

Clearly we wouldnt have all these injuries if Hoke wore a headset.

Yeah the same guys who helped Butt recover from an ACL tear in under a year clearly don't know what they're doing.

I've gone rogue.
I'm done whispering about injuries in the dark shadows of seedy bars while loud music plays. It's time to shout it from the rooftop in broad daylight. (Unless the football gods strike me with lightning - which at that point it was the guy with the binders who was doing the shouting).

this is football. We had some good years to balance this out. 2011 was pretty clean.

We were pretty healthy in 2011 with the same S&C and Wellman. Everything started to go downhill the following year. Countess, Wormley, Bryant, Denard...

If you are just talking games missed this season by starters due to injury, don't forget Jake Butt missing the first few games and being limited in the games hes played. I know he waasnt injured during this season, but it still effects this year.
Also Ondre Pipkins missing games this year too recovering from his injury from last year. So that's another would-be starter who has only played sparingly through 7 games.
But yes I have thought the same thing every weekend, I watch a ton of football and lots of teams have injuries, but nobody has near as many as what we have. Like I have said to my gf everytime someone gets hurt "our team is bad enough when we have everyone healthy, do we really need another freaking injured starter!?"

Far Side! Haven't seen one of those in ages. Damn that guy for retiring.

Michigan in the past 5-6 years has many more injuries than other teams. It must be a fault with the strength and conditioning coach.

The injury gods shall not be mocked. And we have angered them with our petty insolence and entitlement.
We must make an offering. A walk-on may suffice.

Once Spicyweiner hunts you down, I think you will suffice.

David Brandon has pissed off every god in the universe, including the injury gods. Either that, or the schemes and playcalling are so predictable that it allows opponents to "tee off" on Michigan players too easily.
Or, maybe a little of both.

Didn't play yesterday and someone said he had some sort of arm cast on. Anyone hear anything on that?
October 13th, 2014 at 11:21 PM ^
Just watched Inside Michigan Football and saw the cast. It was on his left forearm/wrist/hand.

Let's see what this training staff is made of...some say its part of an old guard that has skated by on being part of the old guard for quite some time. With measures and practices modern in the late Schembechler era. I certainly don't know, I'm far from a doctor.
With the University's medical resources, there is no reason why we shouldn't have the best athletic training staff in the country.
Go out to Oregon and get their bio chambers and all that stuff...shit, I dunno, Ryan and Butt both came back from ACL's quickly. Let's figure out a way to heel up these bruises and boo boos and get the guys feeling their best when they head to EL.

I've been wondering where Pipkins is and Hoke said in the post-game presser that Pipkins "is dealing with a thing". Yeah, we're getting killed by injuires.

I'm sure that list will be much smaller after the bye week.

Defensive line depth is finally reaping benefits. I know Penn State's OL is shaky, but it was good to see some of the 2- and 3-deep DL guys making noise with the normal rotations all shot to hell due to injuries.

Bring back Barwis!
Injuries happen, it feels like it's been a lot, but look at the NFL, countless injuries every team, every week.
But seriously, bring back Barwis.
October 12th, 2014 at 2:32 PM ^
I've felt the same way about my Red Wings the past 5ish years...why the hell can they NOT avoid injuries, ever? I guess sometimes bad luck is really really bad.
The bye week could not come at a better time...hopefully the extra week off will get the injured the rest they need to get back into shape to contend with Sparty.

I'm not sure about the Wolverines training... but see the following article about Stanford and how they've eliminated injuries. FMS helps ensure body strength for specific movements and balance.
