OT: WSOP and Michigan *Spoiler Alert*
I am an avid poker fan and player (although avid does not equal good). I've been a fan of the WSOP for awhile now and follow it every year - not just the TV coverage, but the other events and thanks to ESPN360.com, you can watch some of the final tables to their entirety (around 6-7 hour long gaming sessions).
Anyways, I'm reading a blog about the final table and they're talking about how the players are making their entrance. One person who has caught my attention is Joe Cada. Why? Because of this:
---
Joe Cada was in typical form, surrounded by his friends and family wearing University of Michigan gear with "The Kid" on it.
---
This quote is taken from ESPN's main poker blog. I think it's kind of cool to have that kind of visibility, even though we aren't sponsoring him or anything.
Now for the spoiler - he is officially the chip leader and will convene for heads up play tonight (no idea when the actual taping is) against Darvin Moon (the old chip leader) and hopefully he'll still be wearing some Michigan gear.
I am always up for more Michigan publicity.

I'd like to see him out there in a "In Rod We Trust" shirt.

me and joe went to the indiana game together. he is laid back kid does not act like he is a millionair, I still can't believe the kid i played poker with when he was 16 might become the world champ, and that me and him went to the only freaking big ten game michigan won this year

so he was there at the IND game huh? and since hes obviously one of the luckiest (and skilled of course, but to get to the final table you do need quite a bit of luck)...we better bring him back for the OSU game as our lucky charm!!

Here's hoping he wins!
Think he'll blow some of his winnings on this?

I noticed he was wearing a white-on-white M hat a couple weeks ago and was wondering about him. Is he an alum/student?

He is, alas, a "Wal-Mart Wolverine", attending Macomb Community College before dropping out to play poker. So expect Sparty bashing if he comes through tonight.
I was rooting for Moon until he sucked out to beat Ivey. Nobody sucks out to beat Ivey! Let's go Joe!

Well, if you see any giving him a hard time ask them if their degree pulled them down $500k BEFORE his winnings here. I wish I was so Walmart.

I played in a tourney with Darvin Moon one time, so I'm kind of rooting for him. I didn't talk to him or anything, but I just thought it was cool.
I'll root for Cada to take second place, though.

cada has already taken at least second place.

My buddy, Luke Chung, is a Michigan MBA (from before it was renamed Ross; undergrad at Cornell). He finished 14th in the 2006 WSOP, pulling in a cool $900k.

For those that weren't mgoblog readers back when it happened, "Brian" made a WSOP appearance back in the day. Relevant posts:

a live webcast of the final table the other night while I was up late doing some work. Man, Cada got some luck the other night. Was all the way down to about $2 million chips and fought all the way back. Probably should have been knocked out in 6th or 7th when he went all in on pocket 3's... Shulman called with pocket jacks... but Cada flopped a set to win. Damn lucky, and I guess it happened again later in the night. I'll be rooting for him tonight, seems like a good kid.

Update: The final two started about a hour ago. Mlive has a live blog going and there is a site with updated chip counts.

Cada won. $8.5 million sounds pretty good to me!
GO BLUE!
