The REAL recruiting board!

Most notable updates from 'wednesday recruiting'... #1) it sounds like cornelius jones might end up being a DB here. he's pretty big, 6-2, 200lbs, so i'll list him at strong safety for now. makes him even more intriguing...and he was very intriguing to me even before this. #2) it sounds like we're slipping on LB Olaniyan. So, according to Sam Webb, we've still got 4-6 scholarships available. It's possible that we're going to take more than that (not renewing 5th year seniors, assigning early enrollees to last year's class, etc.). Personally, I think that is true, and I am looking forward to RichRod busting out the snake oil. But for now, for the sake of simplicity, I will keep my predictions at 4-6. It sounds like we've got the inside track on Christian, Grimes, Beachum, and maybe Murphy. Here is a list of all the players that we SEEM to still be in on, in order of our in-ness. Like I said before, I think Rich Rod's got some under the radar snake oil stuff going on, but I'll leave that alone for now. RB - McDowell WR - Stills? DT - Beachum, Thornton DE - Murphy, Clemmings, Mackal LB - Furman, Cornelius, Nealy (new offer), Olaniyan? S - Knight, Jefferson, Parker CB - Christian, Grimes, Mathis If we do indeed land the four players that we seem to have the inside track on, I would like to see us using the last two scholarships on a linebacker (Furman!?), and a safety (Knight!?). If we can land a class of those six, the complete class would look something like this: QB: Gardner SB: White FB: Hopkins WR: Robinson, Williamson WR: Miller SR: Drake SR: Dileo TE: Jackson LT: LG: C: Pace RG: RT: NT: BEACHUM DT: Talbott DE: Wilkins, Paskorz Q: Kinnard, MURPHY MLB: WLB: FURMAN SLB: Robinson SS: Jones FS: KNIGHT, Johnson CB: CHRISTIAN, Avery CB: GRIMES, Talbott If that is indeed the recruiting class we sign, then this is what I see our starting lineup looking like next year. I'm not going to list BACKUPS here, just guys that I think have a shot to play...a lot. QB: Forcier/Gardner SB: Shaw/Smith...Cox-goalline...Robinson-harvin!? FB: Moundros WR: Hemingway...Stokes/Robinson (jr. will get hurt) WR: Stonum SR: Odoms SR: Roundtree/Gallon TE: Koger LT: Dorrestein/Omameh/Lewan/Schofield LG: Schilling C: Molk RG: Omameh/Ferrara/Barnum/Washington RT: Huyge NT: Campbell/Martin DT: Martin/Van Bergen DE: Van Bergen/LaLota/Wilkins/Roh Q: Roh/Ezeh MLB: Ezeh/Fitzgerald...Bell? WLB: Mouton/Leach...FURMAN!? SLB: Jones/Hawthorne/Robinson SS: Kovacs/Williams...Emilien/Gordon...KNIGHT!? FS: Turner/Woolfolk CB: Warren CB: Woolfolk/Turner/CHRISTIAN!?

1) We're not getting Schofner or Kaufman. I expect we'll get one more OL from some guy who hasn't yet been offered. Beachum is being recruited as a DT, by the way. 2) I think we have a good shot with Thornton. Beachum is still committed to Arkansas, so I'm not sure how Webb can be so sure... 3) Murphy would be a good get. Other than that, I don't think we'll get any DEs currently on the board. But I think Paskorz will end up at DE, and maybe Wilkins, too. 4) I think we have a good shot at Furman. Jefferson and Olaniyan, not so much. TomVH says Jefferson is being recruited as a safety, FWIW. 5) Christian and Grimes are good bets. Knight is a possibility. Shaw is a big, fat no. 6) I sure as hell hope Jefferson or Parker commits at safety, because I don't want Swigert.

Beachum is being recruited as a DT, by the way. ...maybe we'll pull an OMAMEH on a late bloomer that the staff's had it's eye on. He's starting as a RS Frosh now. Looking great!!! 2) I think we have a good shot with Thornton. Beachum is still committed to Arkansas, so I'm not sure how Webb can be so sure... ...what makes you think that we have such a good shot with Thornton? 3) Murphy would be a good get. Other than that, I don't think we'll get any DEs currently on the board. But I think Paskorz will end up at DE, and maybe Wilkins, too. ...the way we are recruiting undersized edge rushers, maybe we are thinking something more along the lines of Paskorz-DT, Wilkins-DE, ???-quick. 4) I think we have a good shot at Furman. Jefferson and Olaniyan, not so much. TomVH says Jefferson is being recruited as a safety, FWIW. ...if Jefferson is being recruited at safety, he could start NEXT season. 5) Christian and Grimes are good bets. Knight is a possibility. Shaw is a big, fat no. ...why no on Shaw? 6) I sure as hell hope Jefferson or Parker commits at safety, because I don't want Swigert. ...what don't you like about Swigert?

Thornton is visiting for the OSU game with his teammate Tyrone Cornelius. He says he likes the Big Ten, and likes Michigna and Penn State. Josh Shaw is not considering us anymore, so that's why we're not getting him. I talked to Wilkins the other day, and the coaches have told him he will try out for both the quick and the DE position. They'll figure out where he's best suited. He's got a good frame to build on.

Swigert just isn't a fast-twitch athlete. He's a decent receiver, but I wouldn't want to see him try to tackle someone. He's probably the last DB on our board that I'd want. TomVH answered most of your other questions, but I don't see Paskorz being a DT. He's probably a DE or maybe a Quick.

There's no doubt in my mind that we will oversign and take 28 recruits this year. We need defensive numbers, and we need them badly. 25 will be used for this class, and with high numbers of expected early enrollees, the remaining 3 recruits can be counted toward the previous class. I expect very few 5th year scholarships to be handed out for next year. We need 2 CBs, 2 safeties, a DT, 1-2 OLB, and maybe a OL or TE.

Here are the guys up for a fifth year: QB David Cone QB Nick Sheridan FB Mark Moundros OT Perry Dorrestein OG John Ferrara OG Steve Schilling DT Greg Banks DE Adam Patterson LB Obi Ezeh LB Jonas Mouton K Bryan Wright Of those 11 guys, I think Moundros, Dorrestein, Ferrara, Schilling, Banks, Ezeh, and Mouton will get fifth years if they want them. That's 7. Sheridan, Cone, and Wright are probable nos. Patterson is a maybe; he doesn't play, but we're very thin on the DL.

QB David Cone - not needed. QB Nick Sheridan - MAYBE. FB Mark Moundros - NEEDED. OT Perry Dorrestein - NEEDED. OG John Ferrara - MAYBE. OG Steve Schilling - NEEDED. DT Greg Banks - MAYBE. DE Adam Patterson - not needed. LB Obi Ezeh - NEEDED. LB Jonas Mouton - NEEDED. K Bryan Wright - MAYBE. I see 5 guys back for sure, and 4 maybes for depth.

not so, heininger plays more than both of those guys... NT: Campbell, Sagesse, BIG TEX? DT: Martin, Heininger, TALBOTT DE: Van Bergen, LaLota, WILKINS, PASKORZ Q: Roh, Herron, Watson, KINNARD, MURPHY? I think that Banks will probably be back...but if we can swap him for a recruit I'd do it in a heart beat. The depth chart doesn't look too bad without him. Patterson has absolutely no chance.

There's a ways to go until signing day, so here's my two cents as of now: I think we'll get: - Cullen Christian - Tony Grimes - Clarence Murphy - Jatushan Beachum I'm not too sure, but there's a shot: - Rashad Knight (DB, We'll know more after his visit) - Aramide Olaniyan (LB, Visiting in Dec. with parents, we'll know more then) - Tony Jefferson (S/LB, Visiting for OSU) - Josh Furman (LB, M is, seemingly, in his top two) - Mike Thornton (DT, Likes the Big Ten) - Tyrone Cornelius (LB, teammate of Thornton) - TJ Clemmings (DE, committed to Pittsburgh, we've gotten in on him late, but have made progress) - Sean Parker (S, Continues to list us, he stays quiet so it's hard to tell) - Kenny Stills (WR, worked with Tate, official visit for OSU) - David Mackall (DE, Rivals says he's committed to Maryland, Scout says nothing)

alright, well, now with you and sam webb, that's two credible sources i've heard state that we'll get big tex, christian, and grimes. the way we're still going after undersized de's, i'd guess that murphy isn't guaranteed, but i don't doubt that he will commit. If we can get those 4... DT - Big Tex. DE - Murphy. DB - Christian DB - Grimes LB - ??? Olaniyan? Furman? Cornelius? 6th - ??? Knight (DB)? Jefferson (DB/LB)? Thornton (DT)? Clemmings (DE)? Parker (DB)?, Stills (WR)?, Mackall (DE)? God's speed richrod!

Big Tex Cullen Christian Tony Grimes Clarence Murphy Josh Furman Wildcard: either Olaniyan or Stills(he seems to love Michigan for some reason but a long shot IMO).

Fat Charlie is on a serious hot-seat this very moment. This has been the buzz all over ESPN today (not that we consider ESPN the most credible source). If you think we've it bad, right now I would hate to be a Domer. Which brings me to the question: I asked this a while back but there are two guys on the ND board currently who seriously considered UofM at one point or another: Lo Wood and Chris Martin. At this point in time, would we still be in communication with these guys?

Magnus

November 9th, 2009 at 4:54 PM ^

I haven't heard anything about either one of those guys in a long time. Regardless, I don't think Chris Martin was ever that realistic of an option. On the other hand, Lo Wood was considered a Michigan lock at one point. We were also being considerd by Spencer Boyd, Alex Welch, and Christian Lombard at various points. Weis's departure could affect some of them, but they might be jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire if they go from one tenuous coaching situation to Michigan.

This has nothing to do with your post but aren't you the one saying we won't sign all the WRs we have committed? If that is true then that could open the door for 1-2 more scholarships to get amaride or Furman. Im not sure what they have been saying recently but I had a good feeling about them not too long ago and they would/could be huge gets. As well as CC, grimes, every DB available.

Magnus

November 9th, 2009 at 5:44 PM ^

Yes, I do think one of our five current WRs will end up elsewhere, or at least that one of them is going to have to accept a move to defense. I think Williamson might be the odd man out, but that's pure conjecture. I do think Furman is a very real possibility. I'm not so sure about Olaniyan, though.

It sounds like we're going to have 4-6 scholarships to give, and it sounds like we've got 3/4 guys in the bag: DB - christian DB - grimes DT - big tex DE - murphy? It sounds like we're still in on some: DB's - jefferson, parker, knight LB's - olaniyan, furman, cornelius DE's - clemmings, mackal a DT - thornton a WR - stills accurate summary?

TomVH

November 10th, 2009 at 12:57 PM ^

Let's not say, "In the bag." This is as of right now, and as we all have seen, anything can change. I'm assuming that we'll have some decommits, or some kind of movement somewhere. I don't know anything that I'm not telling you, I just think it's probably going to happen.

that's fine, would have been a nice bonus, but not a huge blow. if we land the 4 guys that we're in line to... DB - christian DB - grimes DT - big tex DE - murphy? and we're still able to land one of the following db's, and one of the following lb's (listed in order of preference)...i'll be happy! DB's - jefferson, parker, knight LB's - olaniyan, furman, cornelius QB: Gardner, Jones SB: White, Hopkins WR: Robinson, Williamson WR: Miller SR: Drake, Dileo TE: Jackson LT: LG: C: Pace RG: RT: NT: BIG TEX DT: Talbott DE: Wilkins, Paskorz Q: MURPHY, Kinnard M: W: OLANIYAN S: Robinson F: Johnson $: JEFFERSON C: CHRISTIAN, Avery C: GRIMES, Talbott

Why are people suggesting that Jatashun Beachum is "in the bag" or "an expected commit"? He's currently committed to Arkansas and I haven't seen/heard any evidence that he's on the verge of switching that commitment to Michigan. I'm not saying it's impossible, but I think some of you are counting your chickens before they hatch...

November 10th, 2009 at 3:40 PM ^

if we land a class of...christian, grimes, big tex, murphy, olaniyan and jefferson...i see our startes next season looking something like: QB: Forcier/Gardner SB: Shaw/Smith...Cox-goalline FB: Moundros WR: Hemingway/Stokes/Robinson...you know junior will get hurt WR: Stonum SR: Odoms SR: Roundtree/Gallon...he could explode onto the scene. TE: Koger LT: Dorrestein/Omameh/Lewan LG: Schilling C: Molk RG: Omameh/Ferrara/Barnum/Washington/ RT: Huyge/Omameh/Schofield NT: Campbell/Martin DT: Martin/Van Bergen DE: Van Bergen/LaLota/Wilkins Q: Roh MLB: Ezeh/Fitzgerald WLB: Mouton/Leach/Bell SLB: Jones/Hawthorne/Robinson SS: JEFFERSON...Kovacs/Williams...Emilien/Gordon FS: Turner/Woolfolk CB: Turner/Woolfolk/CHRISTIAN CB: Warren

FWIW, this topic may be have been posted last week, but I think the discussion was worthwhile and I like the way that you keep re-summarizing and forming the list. Not only is it fun to speculate, but also informative too. A good recruiting class would bring some hope down the line even if it won't impact directly on Saturdays for a while. Thanks for the post.

With the number of early enrollees we had in the last class, isn't it likely that we have more than the 4-6 schollies to offer?
