of Sawshank Redemption? Doesn't it have its own cable channel?
Also, since Requiem For A Dream makes the list, where is Pi?

Paranormal Activity, probably the scariest movie I have ever seen
November 8th, 2009 at 8:16 PM ^
I laughed my ass off during that waste of $13.50. Do people really believe this fake crap? OMG a shadow moving on a door! AAAAAHHHHHH! Exorcist was scary. If you want a great funny movie, Grandma's Boy is gut busting and the series from HBO, East Bound and Down, is great as well.
November 8th, 2009 at 8:46 PM ^
I agree that I laughed a good amount during the movie in the theatre. However, I would say that it would be a TON scarier if you were watching it at home all by yourself. It might still not be that bad, but it would be worse guaranteed. I still thought it was an interesting/good/well done movie and I'm not upset that I went to see it. I enjoyed it even if I wasn't extremely scared. I would recommend it. Grandma's Boy is a great movie and I recently watched Strange Wilderness and that was pretty good as well.

Why? Is it that bad?

What types of movies do you like? I mean, a genre at least would be good to work with.
November 8th, 2009 at 7:12 PM ^
I am open to anything but leaning towards a comedy to lighten the mood.
November 8th, 2009 at 7:44 PM ^
Like Blazing Saddles or Caddyshack are always solid options. Another more recent solid comedy is the Hangover.

Death to Smoochy.
November 8th, 2009 at 9:01 PM ^
That movie was terrible. TERRible.
November 8th, 2009 at 9:23 PM ^
was a pretty good Dark Comedy - the rocketship cookies were hilarious.
But to each his own.
November 8th, 2009 at 10:04 PM ^
I think it just depends on your taste in humor. I am one of the only people that I know that didn't think Anchorman was funny. But, it's a movie most people haven't seen and one of my favorites, so I usually try to kick it out there.

Yes - King of Belch Strikes Back, starring Steve Buscemi as KOB and Dwayne Johnson as the 'moderator with muscles' who finally brings him down. Also, Janeane Garofalo as KOB's cousin/girlfriend, and Elisha Cuthbert as the moderator's intern/sidekick/fuck buddy. Rated R for extreme violence and nudity.

Any Mel Brooks film.

Is The Producers. The original version, not the musical which was Mel Brooks sad ripoff of himself.

Rent/buy "The Office." Any season. They're all fuckin' hilarious.
November 8th, 2009 at 7:56 PM ^
if you want to rent one, watch pineapple express, it is really funny but not appropriate for kids (don't know if you have any)
November 8th, 2009 at 8:58 PM ^
pineapple express was less than funny. I would expect it might be funnier if you were high when you watched it, but only because everything would be funny at that point.
November 8th, 2009 at 11:37 PM ^
Agreed. It was quite underwelming.
November 8th, 2009 at 7:59 PM ^
All the suggestions have been good thus far. A few more:
-The BBC (original) version of The Office. You'll need to pay close attention to catch everything though.
-Adventureland. Surprisingly entertaining.
-Snakes on a Plane if you're looking to just shut your brain off and laugh for a while.
November 8th, 2009 at 9:05 PM ^
I really liked Adventureland.
November 8th, 2009 at 11:39 PM ^
Snakes on a Plane is on the money!!!!
"I have HAD IT with these motherfuckin snakes, on this motherfuckin plane!!!!"
Classic.

a want a good little under the radar comedy - see Screwed with Norm McDonald and Dave Chappell.
November 8th, 2009 at 8:24 PM ^
but I did in fact enjoy PS I Love You. I initially thought it was a stupid chick flick, however everyone I asked said it was a really good movie. I figured what the hell do I have lose by watching this? The respect of my fellow men? Maybe. So I watched alone because I didn't want to be caught with it. I soon realized that it was one of the few well written and original films I had seen in a while (especially with the comic books and remakes). Yes it is sad at times and dammit I do cry, but it is now one of my favorite movies. I highly recommend it.
November 8th, 2009 at 9:02 PM ^
Can't go wrong with a classic like that one. Ever.
November 8th, 2009 at 9:13 PM ^
Funny, action-packed, with some supernatural elements. The perfect movie really. Or, you could watch a newer movie...Trick'r'Treat came out last month and it was pretty awesome, its an horror anthology that takes place on Halloween night...and thats all i'm going to say. Its pretty cool though so defenitly check it out.
November 8th, 2009 at 9:33 PM ^
Go with Snatch, one of my favorites.
One of my favorite quotes from the movie that kind of sums up mGoBoard lately too: "You should never underestimate the predictability of stupidity."
November 8th, 2009 at 9:42 PM ^
I know it's a few days after Halloween, but if you can find a copy of Trick R Treat I think you might enjoy it. It's a horror anthology, which recreates some of the Halloween myths in a series of linked stories. It's spooky, not scary, and in my opinion is quite humorous at times.
If you want straight comedy, you should look into a British TV series called Black Books. They only made 18 episodes across six years, but it's absolutely hilarious. You can probably find quite a few of the episodes on places like YouTube (hint hint wink wink) if don't mind watching on your computer.
Those are my two, non-mainstream suggestions.
November 8th, 2009 at 10:46 PM ^
For what it's worth, I ended up renting The Answer Man. It was more or less a chick flick but it was quite good. Jeff Daniels is excellent.
November 8th, 2009 at 11:33 PM ^
Shaun of the Dead.
Also, you could pick up season one of Damages on DVD. The acting is really good, and the plot is ... engrossing, to say the least. I don't think season two is out on DVD yet, but I could be wrong.

Comedies, since that's what you mentioned:
Anchorman
Old School
Wedding Crashers
Zoolander
Dodgeball
Superbad
Step Brothers
Borat
Big Lebowski
Van Wilder
Sex Drive
40 Year Old Virgin
Austin Powers
Napoleon Dynamite
Mean Girls
Juno (Not really a comedy per se, but has funny parts and witty dialogue)
Dumb & Dumber
The Hot Chick
Talladega Nights....
...Pretty much anything with Will Ferrell in it, or Vince Vaugh, or Adam Sandler you can't really go wrong with.
November 8th, 2009 at 11:48 PM ^
Best movie I've seen in a long long long long time.....Black Dynamite.
I found it on torrents and it's so good I'm thinking of driving down to Colorado to pay money and see it again.

I only watched the trailer, but this is now my favorite movie of all time. It isn't even close. This has been a life changing moment, and I can't thank you enough for it. I will try to pass along the message to as many people as possible.
"But Black Dynamite, I sell drugs in the community."

The movie is 1000X awesome'er
November 9th, 2009 at 12:33 AM ^
LOL is this for real??
If so, I might end my movie theatre hiatus and go see it... I haven't seen a movie in the theatre in like a year because it seems like everything they're putting out is crappy.
This, though, looks *awesome*!!!
November 9th, 2009 at 12:36 AM ^
It has very limited showings right now. Lucky for me Fort Collins is ~60 minutes away.

but srsly...watch it. It's my favorite movie.

Live Hard Sell Hard" was a pretty funny flick! And the girl from "My Boys" is pretty amazing to look at!
