Questions for the next press conferences...

Submitted by Mr. Yost on

We always bitch, moan and complain about the questions asked during press conferences...MGoBlog is one of, if not the most powerful Michigan sports blog/website and reporters DO read this blog to get a feel for the tone of the entire fanbase. Ask away...

  1. Please refrain from the sarcastic stuff (i.e. "are your bags packed?" "when's the last time you've had a CAT scan?")
  2. Please keep your questions reasonably short
  3. Please ask as if you are a reporter in the room
  4. Please don't ask something so open ended or vague that it can be dodged with ease (unless you're trying to imply something, knowing that if the question isn't answered...it actually is telling the reader something.)
  5. Please don't get too specific
  6. Please be as realistic as possible

Also, you probably want to avoid questions that lead to these answers:

  • No, he hasn't thought about resigning - he's here for those 115 guys and the moment he thinks about something differently he's not doing what's in the best interest of the guys in that locker room
  • They've responded well - had a great week of practice
  • He doesn't worry about the negative comments
  • He still thinks we can win the conference
  • He's still not going to discuss injuries
  • He's thinking about Rutgers
  • He doesn't deal with "hypothetics"
  • He can't go back and do anything differently

Hopefully some of these questions end up in the next pressers...neg bomb the silly stuff that gets posted in the thread.

Questions for Hoke:
  • Brady, going into last week did you know right away that Morris was your starter or was it a week long competition with Devin?
    ---Hoke answers
I ask because, if it was a competition and Shane was struggling all game, I think he had something like 49 yards passing and the offense hadn't done much all day...why didn't you put Gardner in the game when it was a close race in practice all week? Especially when Morris and the offense had the flurry of turnovers?
  • Coach, you've had one player already decommit this week, how has this week been in terms of recruiting and how do you think this negative attention will affect recruiting moving forward?
  • Brady, down at Alabama, Nick Saban started the year with a similar QB competition, a 5th year redshirt senior who had "earned" his time and a more highly hyped backup that hadn't been in the program as long. Part of the reason he chose the 5th year player was team chemistry, what was the team chemisty like last week when you benched your 5th year quarterback?
  • Coach, can you elaborate on addressing this situation with your team this week? (I don't expect an answer, but if I ask if he WILL elaborate, he can just say "no"...if I say "can you" then he has to say "that's a locker room matter" or something, which implies that they did indeed talk about it --- which is all I really wanted to know.)
  • Brady, earlier this year there was the Gibbons situation where it was mentioned that he was injured and then had family matters...we later found out the truth. With this situation we were told about Morris' ankle, but that he didn't have a concussion, however in Brandon's statement last night it was confirmed that he did indeed have a mild concussion. (I don't know how to link these to ask "why are you lying to us?" and "will you be more forthcoming in the future?" --- but that's what I'm trying to say.)
  • There was a report during the game that Devin Gardner did not interact with Morris or Nussmeier once the game started...can you elaborate on his frustration and what you'd like to see from him in that situation?
  • Last week, why did you punt when you were down only down 2 scores?

Questions for Nussmeier:

  • Coach do you have the (need a better word for "ability") to change quarterbacks in the game?
---If "yes"...have a field day "why didn't you remove Morris when he was struggling?" "why didn't you take Shane out when he was first hurt back in the 3rd quarter?" "Are you against letting QB's play for 3-4 series and then taking him out if he's not playing well like you would a RB or another position on the field?"
  • Last week you made changes on the offensive line, obviously the game didn't turn out how you anticipated...can we expect more changes this week?
  • How do you balance playing a 2nd TE because you want more blocking over an additional WR who actually may be the better football player?
  • Devin seemed to do well in the no huddle last week, have you thought about going no huddle throughout the game even when it's not 2-minute situations?

Questions for Mattison:

  • In your coaching career, have you ever had to deal with a week like this week?
  • There have been reports about the defensive players getting frustrated with the offensive players due to their lack of production --- how do you avoid these issues?
  • Why didn't Peppers come out to the field last week?
  • Have you spoken to Jabrill about going back home to play in front of his friends and family? What was that conversation like?

I've watched football for a lot of years, and typically a hit like Shane received causes that player's sideline to immediately erupt in calls for flags and ejections, regardless of how far it was from the play, and certainly when it's a QB who JUST released the ball. If nothing else it would be replayed on the scoreboard immediately. Do you really insist that you didn't see this happen at the time?

I wouldn't expect a real answer there, that would be strictly rhetorical for me.

You mentioned that Shane was left in the game even though he wobbled because you had thought it was only a leg injury at the time. What changed your mind, only one play later, and caused you to take him out of the game?

how do you feel about Dave Brandon's press release about Shane's injury and miscommunicaition on the sideline? It didn't coincide with your statement from earlier in the day on Monday. There appears to be miscommunication between your staff during games and the athletic department after games.

At the Monday presser, in response to the question

"Brady, I was going to follow up: he has not been diagnosed with a concussion? Can you say that?"

you replied

“Everything that I know of, no.”

But in Brandon's statement last night, he said

"As of Sunday, Shane was diagnosed with a probable, mild concussion, and a high ankle sprain. That probable concussion diagnosis was not at all clear on the field on Saturday or in the examination that was conducted post-game. Unfortunately, there was inadequate communication between our physicians and medical staff and Coach Hoke was not provided the updated diagnosis before making a public statement on Monday."

How can this be?  Did you make any attempt to be inquire about the diagnosis before taking to the podium at the Monday presser?

PS: Another possibility is that Hoke was being too cute with wording.  Literally, "no" could be taken to mean "No, I could not say that."  But I doubt Brady's that much of a deceiver.

with all the coverage about how bad you mismanaged Shane last week, this got lost. why, when down 2 scores with 4 1/2 minutes left in the game, do you think it's okay to punt and basically give up? is there a difference between losing by 16 and giving up, and losing by 23 but showing the kids that Michigan fights too the end?

Muttley

had we forced a three-and-out we could have gotten the ball back with over three minutes to go, which is certainly enough time to score (maybe on a high variance punt return), kick the onsides, and score again.

Plus, one way to really get back in the game would be via a Minny turnover in that series.

I don't think that's necessarily "giving up".  (Of course, the defense then got steamrolled to run out the clock.)  Maybe we should ask the Mathlete.

"Coach, your timeline from Monday isn't that clear. You said Shane would have practiced Sunday if not for an ankle sprain. But Dave Brandon said in his statement Shane was diagnosed with a concussion on Sunday. Were you unaware of the concussion testing being done? Did you bother to inquire at all on your own? Given all the media hype around this, there would have to have been at least 12 hours from that diagnosis to when you took the podium Monday. Did you really not know this?"

I don't know. I see 2 possibilities to this question and wouldn't expect an answer.

1) Hoke knew everything and was told to keep his mouth shut by Brandon. Inexcusable by both.

2) Hoke genuinely had no clue. Which is almost more alarming for a guy who says he cares so much for his players.

...but either way he has to talk about a statement he clearly made. He can't say something like "I hadn't met with the training staff" because he was definitive that if he didn't have the ankle injury, he'd be practicing.

He's just an idiot...of ALL the times to finally want to talk about injuries, he picks this week.

And where is the PR guy? And as AD...you get everyone in the room and you say "we're evaluating this situation and I don't want anyone to comment on it until we've completed our review...when you're asked, you say just that and that we'll release the findings on Monday or Tuesday."

That would be a true statement, it's something that you actually did (and didn't do horribly at)...and it keeps Hoke from lying, AGAIN.

Brady, when was the first time that you saw the film of the hit on Shane?  Since you treat these players like your own sons, did you not think "Wow, I wonder if my son got hurt on that hit and if they checked him for a concussion."  Having said this, how long of a time passed before you picked up the phone and asked the medical staff if Shane was ok?  How much time passed until you spoke to Shane, your staring quarterback, personally?  Obviously, this call did not happen until after the press conference, correct?

Second, during the game after Devin went back in for the remainder of the game, was Shane still the #2 option or was his ankle sprain too much for him to return?  Had the trainers said he was unavailable for the rest of the game or if Devin became injured would Shane have been sent onto the field again?

Third, when was his first concussion work up done?

Does the medical staff have an obligation to tell the football staff immediately when a concussion is diagnosed?

Did Hoke meet with counsel for the University prior to the Monday press conference?

Did Hoke decide not to learn the results of SHane Morris's examination to allow him to pretend to be ignorant of a concussion at Monday's press conference?

When did Hoke learn of the diagnosis?

When Hoke learned that there would be a press release on the diahnosis, why did he not ask what it would contain?

For Hoke:

"You said Monday you had not discussed Shane's status with Dave Brandon.  This morning, Brandon stated he had meetings starting Sunday morning with those responsible for Shane's care.  Please explain the contradiction."

For Brandon:

"On Monday Brady said he'd had no meetings or discussions with you about Shane's health.  You've stated you had meetings beginning Sunday morning with those most responsible for Shane's care.  Please explain the contradiction."

The only logical way this fits is if Brandon's meeting with the Ira and his mum Whoziwhatzit Head Football Coach was between Hoke's presser and last night's statement.  Which means either a) one of Hoke or Brandon (or both) are intentionally lying about what happened or b) Brandon doesn't consider the Head Fucking Football Coach to be responsible for the health and safety of the players he coaches.

Cluster. Fuck.

Coach, from whom did you learn that Shane had a high ankle sprain on Sunday, limiting his ability to practice? (Docs) Coach, did the docs tell you Shane also had a probable, mild concussion diagnosis? Coach, did you ask anyone on the medical staff about Shane's health besides the ankle after seeing the hit on film or maybe hearing the attention on the hit? Coach, after seeing the hit on film, why did you not ask about the possibility of a concussion? Coach, you have built your success here on a family atmosphere. If you did not follow up with medical staff after seeing the hit on film, how can you defend your care for these students athletes?

1.  Coach Hoke, why did you state that a report would come out from the medical staff and no such report has been released?

2.  Coach Hoke, if your wearing a headset would mean the possibility of better safety and medical care for your players, would you consider wearing one?

There is more than one way to skin a cat.  But whatever the specifics of a concussion communication escalation protocol, they must be

  1. able to be activated instantly by those responsible
  2. reliable...it needs to be foolproof/simple to operate in the confusion of the game

Nussmeier had a headset on the entire time and said he was told by staff above that there was a flag for roughing the passer so they were going to get a timeout. Nothing was communicated to him about possible nature of injury...which, to be fair, probably required the viewing of the replay which may ir may not have been watched by the guys in the box. Regardless, if Hoke had the headset it wouldnt have made any difference as Nussmeier clearly never got the message.

During your Monday press conference, you told us that there would be "a statement from our medical department."  Where is that statement?  Was the press release that the Athletic Director issued on early Tuesday Morning intended to take the place of the promised statement from the medical department?

If you had a policy of talking about injuries, would the sytem have been in place for you to be aware of Shane's status either during the game or in the days after?  Has your stance on disclosing injuries created an environment in which a timely notification from the staff is the exception rather that the norm?

Whose responsibility is it to tell you of a player's status?  Why did this person not tell you before the press conference?  What disciplinary action will be taken?

Brady, your team is the second slowest tempo team in college football. When down a few scores you often snap the ball with less than ten seconds on the clock. You also punted and didn't go for two when the game was still within reach, but additional possession s were unlikely. Other than executing better and competing, can you give a specific example of what your coaching staff is doing do in terms of game management to give this team a chance to win?
