Handling of Morris?

Submitted by MeanJoe07 on

I really want to know everyone's thoughts on the handling of Shane Morris.  It seemed like he wanted to stay in the game, but my personal opinion is that Hoke should have taken him out when he was hurt. I think it's the coaches responsibility to manage this.  If he doesnt manage this...then what exactly does he do? Hoke is a nice guy according to many people's accounts, but it's hard not to lose some respect for him after seeing this game.  Does he really care about the players?  This goes beyond football to me when we are talking player safety.

Hes a piece of shit. He should not be allowed to coach another day. All he does on the sidelines is clap and slap everyones ass. He said in the post game presser he didn't notice Shane was hurt. Bullshit. How didnt he know that? This program is the laughing stock of college football. Hes doing everyone a disservice by not resigning.

This is the kind of talk that infuriates me. To call someone a piece of shit is ridiculous. By all accounts, people say he is a good, decent man. He supports the kids, the university and the philanthropic events they do. You may say you think he is an awful coach or should be fired. I think he should have taken Morris out even earlier. Lay off the piece of shit comments and find better ways to describe your viewpoint,

Fuck that.  This is not armchair, "he should run more bubble screens" or "he should change the O-line coach" or "I heard that he knew that Gibbons was gonna get booted from school and glossed over it."

This is black and white, indisputable fact that he left a very injured, beaten quarterback in a blowout.  It doesn't matter what his reputation is, it doesn't matter how players love him.  He had a very likely concussed, and at least obviously injured QB (who had been obviously injured for three series). And he left him in the game.

Now if he says he didn't know he was hurt and waiting for Morris to ask out, that may be his honest "manball" view of the game and at least it's not malevolent, but it's flat wrong, just like some guy from Alabama thinks it's ok to say the n-word because all the folks back home do.

And if he did know and left him in the game, then he literally ought to be fired tomorrow.

Kids at this age still pretty much think they're invincible. If they can stand up, they'll want to be in the game. The coaches need to tell them they're sitting out a while

He should be fired tomorrow for keeping a kid who was clearly hurt in the game. Putting an injured player back in the game was totally unconscionable. I don't care if Gardner was hurt, we have other qbs.

From the coaches perspective, what would you have known? Pre the head shot, he was a guy who wanted to stay in. No big deal a la Gardner vs OSU, Funchess all year etc.

On the head injury, they couldn't know immediately that it was a chin shot. He made it one more play and came out.

The only question is on the handoff when DGs helmet came off. Again, with no info about a head injury, why not? It was one handoff.

There are a lot of reasons to be upset at Hoke, this one just shouldn't be one of them.

I wasn't that upset with it initially. Like you said with the leg thing, lots of people play with those and we consider it gutsy in most cases.

After the late hit, Morris was clearly motioning to the sideline that he didn't want to come out, so ok. Then they took him out pretty much immediately after that.

The Bellmoy helmet thing upset me because how the fuck do you not tell the 3rd string guy to get ready. I'll give the trainers the benefit of the doubt they checked out Morris by then I guess.

The thing I am pretty pissed about however, is that Brady mentioned postgame that he didn't notice Morris wobbly. That's inexcusable. Are you even fucking watching the game? The fucking QB takes head shot, there's a even a penalty called, but you don't even look his way to see if he's ok? I want to pull for him, but it's pretty clear at this point he's not cut out for head coaching at this level.

Are you, honestly, saying he couldn't have seen Shane struggling to stay upright and stumbling into, and being help up by, his OL? At that point, there shouldn't be anymore he should need to find out. Shane needed to be pulled. If he didn't have his eyes on that area of the field with what was going on, what exactly do we pay him close to 4M/yr for?

taistreetsmyhero

but the potential for harm >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> the benefit of leaving him in that it is basically willful ignorance to the point of wondering whether or not hoke has a competent thought going through his head at any point during a game

MeanJoe07

September 27th, 2014 at 7:58 PM ^

I think if he can't notice that Shane is hurt (something that was SO obvious) what else doesn't he notice?  Maybe he is a nice guy.  I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, but he does not have the awareness to be a head football coach.

Amaizeinblue

He needs to go, today. If he can honestly say he didn't know Morris was concussed or hurt he needs to get his head checked. That just shows how truly inept he is as a coach.

taistreetsmyhero

September 27th, 2014 at 8:02 PM ^

to ensure that--in the event of a criminally negligent coach making the most important stupidest decision a coach could make--the player is required by rule to sit out. Especially with a hit to the head like that.

In any event, I feel like Hoke should be legally responsible for the harm he did to Morris's career.

Cold War

September 27th, 2014 at 8:02 PM ^

Gardner has been left in through much, much worse circumstances. Spitting blood, broken foot, that was fine. Folks thought it was gutsy and great. But Morris has to come out for getting up slowly and hobbling around.

And don't give me the concussion crap. Devin has taken plenty of head shots and was left in.

justingoblue

September 27th, 2014 at 8:13 PM ^

Comparing a broken foot to a concussion? Seriously?

I'd be interested in seeing video of these "plenty of head shots" like Morris took tonight where Devin was allowed to return before being cleared by the medical staff. If they do exist that's absolutely damming for Hoke and he should be relieved of the authority to make personnel calls tonight.

justingoblue

September 27th, 2014 at 8:30 PM ^

I'd like to see video of a single time Devin took a flagged personal foul hit to the head, left the field and then was brought back in before being cleared by medical staff. If that has happened, that's as bad as what Morris was put through this afternoon.

I've seen every snap Gardner has taken as a Michigan QB and I can't think of one instance like we saw with Morris today.

Surely you aren't defending Hoke's negligence in leaving Shane in after that hit and collapsing against an O-lineman, are you?  You do realize, I hope, that defending Hoke by saying he's done the same thing with Gardner isn't really a viable defense.  You are going to go down with the Hoke ship.  We get it.  But please don't try to justify his continued tenure with this sort of logic.

taistreetsmyhero

September 27th, 2014 at 8:16 PM ^

like it's fine.

i think you are right in pointing out that much of the anger is probably towards the general suckiness of hoke. but, I still think that with the combination of young qb, obvious injuy, very competent--probably better--alternative on the bench, the risk of keeping him in so vastly outweighed any semblence of theoretical benefit of leaving him in that is was criminally incompetent.

combined with the fact that they put him back in with the whole helmet thing--you just can't defend hoke's comedic level of stupidity in this situation.

He got a shot to the head that the Minnesota player should have been ejected for and then clearly would have collapsed to the ground if not caught by a lineman. He was limping around, could barely role out the couple plays before this...seriously I feel like you were only listening to the radio or something.

Yooper Blue

September 27th, 2014 at 9:04 PM ^

And wasn't watching the game, unless he left the room for a beer when it happened.  I was listening on the radio, and Brandy and Dan were both hollering about how Shane collapsed into his O-lineman, how Nuss was frantically telling him to take a knee, and how Shane waived it off.  If they can see that from the radio booth, how in the world does Hoke claim he didn't see it?  Cold War is the last of the Kool-Aid drinking Hoke -eecans.  Sten and company have already conceded the obvious.

Brady Hoke should resign. If he cares half as much about Michigan as he says he does he would do so immediately. Never in all my years of watching Michigan football have I ever actually felt ashamed for what happened on the field, until today. You do not put kids in jeopardy and he can't even use the excuse that he left Morris in because with him we had a better chance to win the game. That was clearly not the case.

GoBLUinTX

Fire Hoke, I've been saying that since the ND fiasco, but promoting Nussmeier is not smart either.  You claim that Hoke should be fired because of Morris, but Nussmeier is Morris' position coach and of course he's the OC.  He's standing right there on the sideline, it was first his responsiblity about Morris' health.  Furthermore Nuss didn't ensure Bellomy was ready to be the back up when Gardner went back in the game.  That's two strikes this game not to mention the complete and utter breakdown of the offense against ND, Utah, and Minnesota.

GoBLUinTX

Gardner was correct to start warming up when he did.  The coaching staff was remiss in allowing Morris to return.  An injured player on the field is looking for further injury, the adults in charge should have brought him off the field and kept him off the field.  Regardless, once it was determined that Gardner was the coaching staff should have made sure Bellomy was ready to go.  After Morris took that shot to the head and had to be all but carried off the field, the medical staff should have looked after him.

kept Morris in there to the Very Last Moment.  You know--  to Get Experience . . . . .

BS.

1st of all he should not have been back out there with the hit to the head and the 3rd stringer missing his helmet - use a timeout then.

2nd of all you play to win and Gardner from a game point of view should have been put back in there early in the 3rd when Morris was hobbling on one foot to try and see if Gardner could spark an anemic offense.

1) Hoke had to have seen Shane wobbling around like that.

2) Hoke had to have seen the late hit that was put on Shane AFTER he was wobbling around like that.

3) Hoke made the decision to keep Shane in the game despite 1 and 2 above.

4) Hoke finally pulled him out after the crowd was going nuts and someone on the sideline told him to.

5) Hoke is neglegent and a fucking liar in his press conference.

6) Hoke put his players at risk for some reason, probably being stubborn.

7) Hoke put Shane in a horribly embarrassing situation, in addtion to having to play hurt...he basically dared the kid to walk off the field or lay down.

Credit Shane for being tougher than that situation that his coach put him in to.

Its time to put an end to the Hoke error *era.

Fuck Hoke...and Brandon too.

Morris had an injured ankle. Maybe the reporting was off, but they said they weren't even checking for concussions.  Guys have played on worse.  I'd have taken him out earlier, but I think people are way overreacting on this.

What puzzles me is why people are "inventing" reasons to argue Hoke should be fired.  He should be fired because we've gotten worse every year, and we're terrible now.  That's all you need.  Everything else is just silly.  Quite frankly, I think it's counter productive.

uofmDPT

September 27th, 2014 at 8:14 PM ^

and it's another to look at multiple plays where there is a significant rotational stress to the left knee and ankle that can cause significant injury.  The point is that there was nothing to gain by leaving the kid out there.  This leads to an overwhelming trend that the head guy in charge does not seem to exercise common sense or have any clue about the overall context of each game.  Why was Devin Funchess playing in the last two minutes of the Notre Dame game???

GoBLUinTX

September 27th, 2014 at 8:15 PM ^

with the loss, and the way the lost, to ND that Hoke should be fired, so I have no reasons to invent to fire Hoke.  That said, Hoke and his coaching staff, and the medical personnel were negligent in not checking Morris for injuries and specificially a concussion after the hit.  Of course they didn't check.  You don't ask questions if there is a chance you're not going to like the answer.

DetroitBlue

He got leveled by a helmet to helmet kill shot, his ankle wasn't the issue. He was clearly wobbly, and if you take any solace in the fact that he wasn't being tested for a concussion, you have an unreasonable, and completely unwarranted amount of faith in the coaching and training staff.
