NEW Gregg Henson article alleges ex-players signed petition to fire Brandon

Submitted by FabFiver5 on

Gregg Henson has published a new article on his website alleging that more than 450 former football players signed a petition and presented it to the Regents to have Dave Brandon removed.

Among other things, there's an alleged email exceprt from a "former football captain" that lists all the things the players can't stand about Brandon. If you like juicy info and potentional conspiracy theories, this piece is chock-full.

If any or all of this is true, look out, fireworks may actually start happening around the Big House.

Enough grist there to keep our mill going for weeks. My favorites among the accusations by former players:

2)alumni tix reorder down big (DB wont announce #)
3)DB micromanages M sports
  – On sidelines during games, hugging and coaching players on nationwide television
-cutting nets down in regional final 4 championship, before head coach
-attends football staff meetings and reviews game films w coaches
5)Got Mary Sue Coleman president job w his republican vote then got her to name him AD after telling regents he only ran for regent so he could pursue political dreams(governor)
7)Knew Les Miles and Jim Harbaugh wanted M job, never offered either
10)Has been quoted many times in national media, “I was CEO of 3  fortune 500 companies and learned if it’s not broke, break it”  He has succeeded in this one
11)Corporations,not alumni and students, rule M
12)Covered up Mary Sue Colemans drunk episode at Nebraska halftime as a “malfunction of the sound system”
15)Sells sponsorship for head coach salary and others to people like Ira Harris e al
16)Everything for sale at U of M
Jacks up prices of hot dogs, water ect to students who cant afford it
18)Did nothing after Ann Arbor police informed him before Iowa game that Brendan Gibbons and Lewan involved in rape case, then instructed coaches to say nada
19)Fires Ron Warhurst, Pam Stevens,Charley Green,Bruce Madeji and many others regardless of service to Michigan athletics

We cannot vouch for the accuracy of all this, of course. But the other allegations:

"Brandon flew to Baton Rouge to 'talk to Les Miles,' while talking to Les at the Baton Rouge Airport he proceeded to tell Miles why he wasn’t going to offer the gig.  Including 'I can’t afford you.' In other words, he wasn’t hiring Miles under any circumstances.  He also NEVER even reached out to Jim Harbaugh.

Brandon’s old insecurities prevent him from hiring a coach with a higher profile than him.

An interesting new name to surface on the potential AD list is Texas Tech Deputy AD Joe Parker who was instrumental in raising the money for the upgrades to Michigan Stadium among other projects.  Joe Parker is also extremely close to massive Michigan donor Stephen Ross, the owner of The Miami Dolphins.  He may be a better candidate at this point than Ward Manuel.

The new AD will be named and will have to give Brady Hoke one more year (2015) to be fair to him and the Athletic Department.  Most of Hoke’s people are pointing to next year as Brady’s best chance to compete for the B1G title and a playoff spot.  This scenario of course changes if Harbaugh is available."

If two-thirds of this is true, and we KNOW half of it to be. . . we are on our way to better.
Thank you, former players.

Is this all paraphrased stuff or what? I suppose that someone could have turned in something like this to the Regents, but it's difficult to believe that 450 former players would sign off on it without anyone raising concerns about framing and grammar. I haven't the slightest, things happen. But it looks weird to me. Perhaps the guy didn't have access to an actual copy of the letter? If he did I would assume he would have published the text.

I have no idea if Henson was the first to report Hoke, but I remember Doug Karsch talking up Hoke as a candidate before anybody else (that I heard) mention him.  I think Karsch was talking about Hoke as a dark horse candidate before RR was let go.

I work in college athletics. Granted I don't work for Michigan, however I do work with some people who used to work there. In terms of the first part of this story, the part that describes Brandon as a bull in a China shop who fires people on whim, I can confirm that I've heard this exact same thing from the people who used to work there. Apparently most people in the AD don't like him, and that the employees do their job out of fear of getting fired rather than wanting to see Michigan do well. Brandon is a businessman, not a department manager.

comparing him to Adolph (sic) Hitler is so over the top I can't believe anything about this "petition" would warrant signatures by 450 former players and/or be taken seriously by the regents.  This is just junk click bait.

Lol that last sentence was very deflating. If Harbaugh/Miles are interested, you hire them now. No way do you give Hoke another year if this season turns out like we all think it will. Of course, this article is probably horse shit, but if it's not, then whoever gets the AD job must act fast. Brady will have had 4 years and that is plenty. If Michigan loses saturday...well let's just things will get even more interesting.

I'll say it: if we lose to a team that won last week's game against a meh SJSU by completing ONE PASS then I will advocate for firing Hoke post haste.

That is completely unacceptable considering that team throws the ball even worse than we have to this point.

We lose this weekend and the department won't need to fudge the numbers for PSU Under The Lights.
