UM hockey game vs. Miami

Anybody else on here at that game? The reffing was pure garbage. All 3 "goals" were reviewed and only 1 allowed. And they called a penalty for embellishment?! What the hell?! Who calls it that? Why not just say diving? Fun crowd and really loud, just bullshit reffing.

miami got the bounces and took advantage. it was truly the worst effort i've ever seen out of us especially at home. the whole 3rd period they were just being lazy. i dunno how else to put it. it was an awful awful effort. despite the fact we managed to outplay them most of the game

I know, they didn't seem to put in much effort either. But refs having disallowed two goals may have deflated them a little. I'm not blaming it all on the refs, but they could have had something to do with it.

The calls on those reviews were legit. The puck never crossed the line, and AJ directed the other with his foot. The were several calls and non-calls alike that I wasn't impressed with, but I find it hard to say the officiating was pure garbage. Embellishment and Diving are actually two separate calls. Diving is called when a player attempts to draw a penalty when no infraction has actually occurred. That player is issued a minor penalty, and given that no offense actually occurred, is the only penalty issued on the play. Embellishment is issued when an infraction actually occurs, yet the 'victim' of the call helps it along a little. Two penalties are issued, one for the actual offense, and one for the embellishment. The penalties offset and the result is even-strength play.

First of all, embellishment shouldn't be a penalty in the first place. If a penalty occurs, it shouldn't matter what the player does unless they delay the game (in which case, use a delay of game penalty). Secondly, it negates an actual offense because the officials got annoyed with the player who was denied an opportunity. If diving and embellishment were called with any degree of regularity, I'd be more OK with it. However, they're not, players dive and embellish all the time and rarely get called. Enforcing a rule sporadically just leads to confusion and annoyance, which is why consistency is something that is regularly impressed upon refs as highly important.

Yeah some questionable calls, but Michigan earned that result with their play. They were god awful tonight. Welcoming in the #1 ranked team to a packed house that was loud as hell, and they came out and sucked....bad. they couldn't win battles along the boards, they couldn't break Miami's defense through center ice, the fore-checking was horrendous, the passing was average at best, they had 3 guys within 2 feet of each other in the offensive zone constantly all night, they couldn't hit the side of a barn with shots, the power play was a complete disaster...... officials were the least of Michigan's problems Friday night.

I'd agree with all these assessments; I wasn't at the game, but I listened to the audio stream, as I'm sure most of you did. It seems to be a yearly problem with Michigan Hockey. We're highly ranked, and we have a huge game at Yost. The crowd is jacked, everyone is ready...except for the team themselves. I don't know what it is, but whenever we have a huge game, the team comes out FLAT. Not to mention, it seemed like a puck sailed over every net, and this power play was awful...ONCE AGAIN. We haven't had a serviceable power play in about three years.
