Friday Night Shut-ins Stay Warm: What are you drinking?
The world has changed since our last Shut-in thread. Gone are summer warmth, autumn leaves, and the afterglow of Notre Dame.
We have cause to drink, and nerves to dull before the most important Purdue game in living memory.
So: what are you drinking, and is it nice? Also, preemptively: HOLD ON TO THE DAMN BALL.
Forgot to add: I'm on a Labatt Blue, soon switching to hot spiced apple cider and brandy. It's nice.

It's like 70 degrees out. I'm about to head to a high school volleyball playoff game, so no alcohol yet. Once I return, it'll be Saint Arnold's Brown Ale. It's not the best brown ale, but I'm working on getting a job with Saint Arnold, so I feel I should be overly familiar with their beers.
November 6th, 2009 at 7:47 PM ^
But I'd trade for it. Good luck to your daughter and her team.
November 6th, 2009 at 7:50 PM ^
Did I say I had a kid? I'm just going because I enjoy the game. Have a female friend that played for them a few years ago. It's the playoffs. It's 18 year olds in spandex. It's cheap. It's volleyball.
November 6th, 2009 at 7:55 PM ^
I was hoping you were going to say something like that. +1 for spandex and volleyball.
November 6th, 2009 at 10:39 PM ^
That's what I love about these high school girls, man. I get older, they stay the same age.
November 6th, 2009 at 8:11 PM ^
I think we might as well add we are doing while shut in. TV or Music? I am pulling up some videos on Youtube while surfing the web. right now Michael Franti and Spearhead, I love that song.
I tried watching the Pistons but had to turn it off.

A fine sipping drink over ice while studying for my Monday morning exam
Tonight, who knows. Definitely not going to be shut-in once I'm done with this material!
November 6th, 2009 at 9:14 PM ^
+1 for the Hendricks. -1 for studying for a Monday exam on Friday. That's what we have Saturday and Sunday for.
November 6th, 2009 at 9:45 PM ^
is out of the question
November 6th, 2009 at 10:46 PM ^
I never said you had to be sober while studying.
November 6th, 2009 at 9:18 PM ^
I used to drink when I studied too. I liked the theory behind killing the slow running brain cells. It's natural selection really.
November 6th, 2009 at 7:38 PM ^
The Blue became my beer of choice in Ann Arbor and I literally can never find it in California (unless I go to BevMo or something but I am just too lazy to do that on a regular basis).
I still have some work to get done, but once that is through I plan on pouring Cutty Sark over a big pile of ice, unless I get roped into going to dinner with a couple who are friends of my girlfriend (in which case I will just daydream about Cutty-and-Ice Mountain).
November 6th, 2009 at 8:38 PM ^
My everyday beer of choice as well from my time spent in Ann Arbor and northern Michigan. I ran into the same problem moving to Oregon. So far I've found one bar and one store. I made a little bit of a scene when I finally found it sandwiched near the specialty beers at Safeway.
November 6th, 2009 at 7:38 PM ^
pissing the night away, I got a whiskey drink, I got a vodka drink, I got a lager drink, I got a cider drink.
I am beyond worrying about the Purdue game, I don't think we are as bad as we have shown the last 2 weeks, but if we are ain't shit I can do about it anyway.
November 6th, 2009 at 8:12 PM ^
For the Chwambawamba (or however its spelled) reference.
My wife is English and it took her and I a couple of times to figure out what the hell they were saying. Also, kinda appropriate for the state of M Football: "I get knocked down/I get up again/Never going to keep me down." (Accent redacted.)
Heaven help you if you actually do the drink rotation in that song. The next morning will be rough.

Molson Ice
November 6th, 2009 at 7:45 PM ^
and tastiest "ice" beer, in my estimation. Good choice.
November 6th, 2009 at 8:09 PM ^
Isn't that like "smartest USC Song Girl" or "most rational State fan"?
November 6th, 2009 at 8:10 PM ^
and Labatt Ice are solid drinks.
They are a far cry from their Natural and Beast Ice brethren.
November 6th, 2009 at 8:34 PM ^
but the beer snob in me can't concur.
November 6th, 2009 at 8:35 PM ^
Black Can
5.9% ABV
But Stroh's beats all. If you aren't drinking microbrew (or some good Eurobrew), don't kid yourself... it's piss water. The cheaper the better.
November 6th, 2009 at 8:42 PM ^
solid.
It has a much different taste than the other beers at the same price point.
November 6th, 2009 at 8:52 PM ^
Can't beat that.
FACT: they converted to an ice cream factory during Prohibition. Hence, Stroh's ice cream. trivia!

Please take the following steps:
+ Go to Ashley's on State Street.
+ Sit at the bar.
+ Repeat what you said in this thread to the bartender.
+ Wait for laughter and dismay to subside.
+ Ask for help.
We're with you in this effort. Together, we can get you through this. But you've gotta WANT to change, which means you have to admit you have a problem. That's the first step.
November 6th, 2009 at 9:22 PM ^
I think you missed the part where he said "price point." At the price it is at, Strohs is better than Natty, Busch, and Keystone.
And if you go to Ashley's expecting anything other than extreme beer snobbery and ridiculously high prices, well, you're going to the wrong place.
November 6th, 2009 at 9:21 PM ^
9% ABV. Purple can. You can't get any more elegant unless you are drinking Night Train!
November 6th, 2009 at 9:49 PM ^
The worst beer I have ever had
bar none
is Beer 30 Light
Look at this shit
Tastes like drinking saliva dripping from chewed grape gum
November 6th, 2009 at 10:15 PM ^
had was Milwaukee's Special Reserve Ice.
That swill makes Genessee look high class.
November 7th, 2009 at 2:45 AM ^
I've seen that shit in a few random stores. There is also a Beer 30 Ice as I recall. Since it is only available in 30 packs (as far as I've seen) I haven't had the courage to dive in. I'll take your word for how putrid it is, but I'd really like to try it myself just to know.
November 6th, 2009 at 9:52 PM ^
makes me queasy. Haven't tried the Super, but their basic lager has killed more Scots than Edward Longshanks.
November 7th, 2009 at 2:48 AM ^
The purple is what bums drink. Strangely enough, Americans really love it!
November 6th, 2009 at 9:20 PM ^
Just not those weak, crappy lagers.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bock#Eisbock
They tend to be pretty strong, though.
November 6th, 2009 at 9:34 PM ^
I failed to consider eisbocks. I was focused on ice super-macro-lagers.
November 6th, 2009 at 7:41 PM ^
Some Lakefront Brewery Extra Special Bitter and Anchor Steam Lager - an old standby.
As for Lakefront - I went on the tour a few years ago and their motto was "Drink Now, Tour Later." It was cheap and we got a pint glass and a bunch of beer. Highly recommended if you're in Milwaukee looking for something to do...
November 6th, 2009 at 8:39 PM ^
I'd be glad to help you plan beer tours in Michigan if you get the chance
November 6th, 2009 at 7:50 PM ^
I cleaned out my local beer depot of their remaining stock of Sam Adams - Cherry Wheat. It's made with Cherries from Michigan. Between that and the Jameson, I might be able to drink right through the game (9am west coast starts are the best).
November 6th, 2009 at 8:05 PM ^
That way I don't have all day to get nervous or agitated or bored waiting for gametime.
How about this rain we've been having, eh? It's sealing the whole "shut in" thing for me tonight.
November 6th, 2009 at 8:17 PM ^
I'm already nearly a shut-in. The rain only reinforces it.
I will say that last weekend was very tough for me. Upper 70's and sunny vs. watching the debacle. The weather lost and so did we :(
November 6th, 2009 at 9:17 PM ^
Jameson is fine. The first whiskey I truly enjoyed on the rocks. I have a bottle sitting in my office. I asked my boss if I should hide it when clients come in my office. He said who the fuck cares. Not a bad boss I guess.
November 6th, 2009 at 7:54 PM ^
Probably going to mix myself a little Smirnoff and Diet Seven-Up in a bit. The lady and I are (technically) dieting. Oh so very hardcore, I know.
November 6th, 2009 at 8:02 PM ^
My girl is setting an example as bad as yours is good: she's English, so in keeping with their thousands of years of inexplicable culinary choices, is making a 'Christmas Cake.' Which is a fruit cake, density of Uranium, that you let stand for 4-6 weeks while daily 'feeding' it rum. You just keep pouring booze on it until it's as flammable and appetizing as birch bark.
I'll take the diet 7-up instead, thanks.
November 6th, 2009 at 8:16 PM ^
Mine is Irish, so all she knows how to make are potatoes and mixed drinks. We order out a lot, but my liquor cabinet is always well stocked.
November 6th, 2009 at 8:27 PM ^
My wife is a good cook, but English cooking is, well, interesting. My wife does alot of curries. I guess its the whole colonial thing?
I have had the Christmas cake - its like a fruit cake that drank a fifth of booze. Surprisingly, this is not an improvement.
November 6th, 2009 at 8:34 PM ^
On both counts.
The Indians and Pakistanis have colonized the UK's kitchens, and it's a wonderful thing.
November 6th, 2009 at 8:42 PM ^
a give-and-take hegemonic relationship.
Well....
Take-and-take for the Brits
Give-and-taken for the rest
November 6th, 2009 at 7:57 PM ^
a bottle of Dogfish head Midas Touch.
Might just stick with the King of beers and save the good stuff for later.
I got some Tattoo and Cider for tomorrow pumped about that.
November 6th, 2009 at 8:43 PM ^
Just picked up some Midas Touch at Super Liquor IV in AA. Pricey as all hell but damn it is good!
November 6th, 2009 at 8:45 PM ^
but you would pay 4 bucks a bottle for a domestic beer at a bar/restaurant.
Why not pay 4 bucks a bottle for an amazing beer at home?
November 6th, 2009 at 8:49 PM ^
best part about the real good beer is keeping it in the cellar... so your mooch friends can't spot it in the fridge! Ha!
ladies can have some, though, if they ask nicely :)
November 7th, 2009 at 12:04 AM ^
I do love Super Liquor, but be careful, their premium beers can tend to sit on the shelf for a very long time. I have seen Dogfish Head (my personal favorite brewery) product on the shelf their that was past the best by date.
