If they are equal, then he should start. Tie goes to the younger guy.
I like Gardner, but it's just not happening with him. His record as a starter is around .500. I'm sad to say it, but it's time to go with Shane and see what he can do.

Unless you are lighting up the world with your run game, why are they running so much god damn play action again this year which is not fooling anyone, the line does not block long enough for a shot down the field/and or not designing anything over the top anyways.
I thought that the evidence of Gardner sucking at play action and being exceptionally labored in the speed of his drops was fully on display all of last year....might want Nuss to watch that. He was recruited to run a shotgun spread, it is what he is good at, he has absolutely terrible footwork in the pocket and now he is trying to be a pocket passer which deep-sixed Denard as well.
Gardner is at his best running wide open out of the gun, period. Go to Morris or Speight even if you want to run a pro-style play action offense and with limited viewing, I would tend to think Speight is the most accurate at this point, so maybe even consider a few drives with him next week.

At least we can beat Rutgers.

is it in the road or at home?
September 20th, 2014 at 9:03 PM ^
No, Morris Gardner. Don't get me wrong, DG isn't lighting the world on fire, but that's now 3 TOs by Morris in less than a half of football.

After Morris scores a few times next game, you'll see the difference..
and good coaching eh? or morris is a fucking moron, too, running with the ball loose like that.... this is what we get with the entitlement.
September 20th, 2014 at 9:08 PM ^
Yeah, seriously, Gardner has been bad, but all of Morris's drives except one has ended in turnovers caused by Morris. He might be a good player in a year or two, but he's not where he needs to be right now.
September 20th, 2014 at 9:39 PM ^
As poor as Gardner has been this year, he was effective at times in 2012 and 2013, most recently in the OSU game. Morris has looked awful and overmatched every time he's had to play. If he had started the OSU game, we probably would have lost 49-0. I think it's more likely that Gardner will turn it around than that Morris will take a quantum leap to a level he hasn't even come close to yet.
September 20th, 2014 at 10:25 PM ^
The one time Morris got to prep for and play an entire game as a starter (KSU), he performed respectably. It's not fair to look at his little bits of garbage-time action and draw conclusions. He didn't get most of the practice reps this week, and didn't get to play today until it was 26-10 and driving rain.
To be clear, I don't think Shane is the savior of the 2014 team - there isn't one. I think it's going to be a rough season regardless. That being the case, I'd like to get the guy who will (in all likelihood) be our starter in 2015 and '16 a chance now to get some experience.
September 20th, 2014 at 10:27 PM ^
Morris was terrible against K-state when he threw more than a 5 yard pass
September 21st, 2014 at 9:31 AM ^
to put up with growing pains with Morris. I am not willing to put up with a growing pains from a QB who has been with the program for what seems like 10 years and is still horrible.
September 20th, 2014 at 9:06 PM ^
Morris is like a deer in the headlights. I noticed the same thing when he played in that high school all-star game.
Hoping he can get it together.
September 20th, 2014 at 9:07 PM ^
Gardner's also a senior and Morris a sophomore. What good does it do, in the long run, to play a senior now?
September 20th, 2014 at 9:09 PM ^
You're just a fucking idiot.
September 20th, 2014 at 9:15 PM ^
Morris is worse, end of story. He doesn't give us a chance to win at this point.

We scored 3 offensive points combined against ND and Utah with Gardner at the command. What are we clinging to?
If we don't get Morris some time this year, we may take our lumps next year when he's a new starter. Just pull the band-aid off now and let him gain experience.
September 20th, 2014 at 9:52 PM ^
In all likelihood Hoke isn't going to be around next year so that really shouldn't even enter into it. And the fact remains that our offense with DG, that was only able to score 3 points against ND and Utah combined, is much, much better than our offense with Morris. That's how terrible Hoke's player development has been; in year 4 our best offense can only manage 3 points against the only 2 teams we've played with a pulse. Let that sink in for a minite

Scoring 3 points over two games is horrible. I don't know how you can rationalize that. With Gardner at QB, games without an offensive TD are disturbingly common.
Gardner, sadly, has regressed badly. His footwork is a mess and his accuracy is all over the place. The completions we had today mostly required excellent individual efforts from the receivers, even on little tosses into the flat. I'm surprised this has happened. I thought he'd have a strong senior year, but he seems like a bundle of nerves despite all the experience he has.
Now, Morris is no great shakes either. But he has only one career start under his belt and doesn't get anywhere near as many practice reps with the first team, so it's not surprising he's looked shaky. You don't normally expect your backup QB to come in cold off the bench and look awesome.
September 20th, 2014 at 10:25 PM ^
I mostly agree. DG has regressed terribly, but I still think he's a much better option than Morris at this point. Above all, I feel bad for DG and think he's been irreparably damaged by terrible coaching here. He had all the potential in the world coming out of high school, and he's been reduced to this.
September 20th, 2014 at 10:44 PM ^
nothing. It kills me to agree, but here really is nothing to add here to your assessment.
September 20th, 2014 at 10:35 PM ^
There's a reason coaches never do what you are suggesting.
September 21st, 2014 at 9:33 AM ^
Gardner doesn't give us a chance to win now either! Hoke was right about sticking Gardner at WR. Should have left him there. Would the program have been any worse off if Morris started all of last year and then this year? I don't see how it could have been.
September 20th, 2014 at 9:57 PM ^
Lack of a second receiver or deep threat is killing the offense. Run game & line have been better than last season. Need that Jeremy Gallon. Chesson/Darboh aren't getting it done.
Morris is probably a better runner, but otherwise there's no real point to pulling Gardner.
September 21st, 2014 at 9:35 AM ^
you haven't watched Gardner attempt to throw the ball? It's not a lack of WR options, it's a QB that locks onto 1 reciever and even if that one WR is open, he can't get him the ball...Gardner is bad...If the team is going to not be good again this year, just keep giving Morris game reps this season and prepare him by giving him as much playing time as possible. Keeping Gardner at QB does nothing but harm the team.

It's an apples to orange comparison. Gardner had several games in 2012 and all of last year. Morris has one start under his belt.
September 20th, 2014 at 9:04 PM ^
It's dark, water everywhere, maybe 500 people in the stands, and it looks like a drunk flag football game out there. Surely this must be the end...how embarrassing.
September 20th, 2014 at 9:12 PM ^
before someone like Brandon will even acknowledge they're bad--let alone half the people here. We've had one humiliation after another and they've been thoroughly blase. I don't think this one can be skirted, though. And there's nothing but more ahead. You wouldn't wish this on MSU, let alone your own team. But maybe just maybe this knocks sense into someone's head.
September 20th, 2014 at 9:04 PM ^
Still thinks he's playing highschool football.

Do you think Morris would be better this year had he red-shirted? You don't red-shirt your #2 QB to save a 5th year if you want to win games now.
September 20th, 2014 at 9:05 PM ^
More like "slower Gardner."
September 20th, 2014 at 9:05 PM ^
Both QBs force things because nothing comes easy for this offense. Morris has to be averaging about 1 turnover per every 10 snaps.

Let's at least give him a week of preparation until we pass judgement. But yes more turnovers feels like more of the same.
We just can't have nice things I guess.
September 20th, 2014 at 9:10 PM ^

Our QB situation is not so black and white. Morris is not ready. We have better potentional of winning with Gardner. Be cause he can drag the play longer and on broken plays turn it into the bigger play with his legs. Morris still relys to much on his arm.
