Top 5 optimistic remaining recruiting targets

Submitted by jkwings on

I’d be interested to see what everyone’s Top 5 optimistic (changed from "realistic" b/c I think discussion on how much of a longshot prospect X is doesn't add much) remaining recruiting targets are for our 2010 class. I wouldn’t classify Seantrel as realistic because it sounds like he’s probably USC bound so my Top 5 would look like this:
1. Josh Shaw, CB – shutdown corner who may be visiting for OSU, definitely a long shot but still an outside chance.
2. John Fulton, CB – we’re still in the race for his final visit so another longshot but a man can dream, can’t he?
3. Wayne Dorsey, DE – we’re in the running for this monster along with about a dozen other premium programs.
4. Cullen Christian, CB – we all know and love Cullen and him committing elsewhere would be a serious gut punch.
5. Tony Jefferson, S – UCLA commit but he’s also visiting for OSU.

We’ve got some big kids coming in for OSU and that got me thinking – what would be the best case scenario in terms of game outcome from a recruiting standpoint? An exciting win in spite of terrible DB play? Would someone like Shaw rather see clear evidence that he would be starting from day 1 or a glimmer of possible future national championships?

A realistic 5 for me would be -

Olaniyan
Two of Christian, Grimes, Knight and Mathis
Furman
Sean Parker

A wish list would be -
Seantreal Henderson
Olaniyan
Christian
Tony Jefferson
Shaw

You have to realize that a lot of the players that we have chances with are package deals with other players. For instance, if you put Tony Grimes in there, you have to put Clarence Murphy in as well. That would take away another scholarship from one of the other guys up there. Mike Thornton would likely be a package deal with Tyrone Cornelius. It's frustrating, especially with the amount of scholarships we have left, but it's the way it is.

that asking for people to list "realistic" targets and then listing your first two candidates as "longshot" and "another longshot" makes sense. Realistic and longshot would be on opposite ends of the hopeful spectrum.

Christian is the only one from the above list (wing's list) that I think we actually land. After that, Josh Furman comes to mind as does Aramide Olaniyan. I think we have legit chances with both of those young men. After that, who knows.

I agree. More realistically, one of Furman/Olaniyan, two of Grimes/Knight/Christian/Mathis, Grimes' teammate DE Murphy, and maybe Kenny Stills. At this point in the season if they haven't planned an official visit for a game, and we haven't heard much about them, our chances are probably 1%.

"what would be the best case scenario in terms of game outcome from a recruiting standpoint?"

How long has it been since we won?

But I can see why someone would want to see Pryor have a career day against our secondary. Then we can look forward to offseason recruiting victories. Holy crap.

I agree that a win would be better but would a (highly unlikely) stomping of the Buckeyes be a better outcome than a nail-biter in which we eke out a three point victory in spite of getting gashed through the air? I'm sure it varies from recurit to recruit but I'll bet some blue star kids put more of a premium on starting sooner vs. riding the pine on a better team.

If you think some "blue star" (new rating system? Did you work for George W Bush? What's an Orange Star mean nowadays?) kids value playing time, UM would have a class of 40 Blue Stars by now.

Wow--you've given me an idea: Color star rankings for recruits! That seems to combine the possibility of attack with recruiting, so a smart guy can kill two birds with one stone! "Hey, Smitty Baggodonuts is a Purple Star out of Florida! Check your guide: Purple Star means pretty good player AND get out the duct tape and plastic, cuz the bombs are on their way toward us! DUCK! AND COVER!"

Clearly I'm trying to create a new rating system based on star color rather than star quantity. That's a much more reasonable explanation than a slip of the keys between "blue chip" and "5 star". Nice point total by the way.

In my opinion it's warranted because it was a shot at someone who has apparently made it their goal to post as much contradictory/obnoxious/negative stuff as possible. My intent in starting the thread was to see who were the top guys that people think we have a decent chance at signing and then of course someone has to chime in with a snarky comment. Props to you for having his back though.

one I think we have a chance for on that list is Cullen. That is my opinion, from reading rivals everyday because I have no life, Other than michigan football from August to January lol

I think the best case outcome for our the game is a Michigan blowout. Mind you, this is highly, highly unlikely, but recruits have a better time when the crowd is really into the game and the team does well. I think they've already seen how badly depleted out defense is in terms of talent and seeing them do well wouldn't deter them from coming here (especially the top guys).

I think we have a very realistic shot at Grimes. Mostly because he has had good things to say about us all year, and now that we are one of the few schools that offered both him and his best friend (Murphy the DE) our chances will only go up.

If a bunch more people give their 2 cents we can come up with an mgoblog group consensus. I'm picking up some sort of pattern - perhaps a focus on the defensive side of the ball?

Realistically I have the same top 4 as Wolverine IN Exile with Furman added. A wish would be Gabe King. He is virtually an Oregon lock since he all of the sudden picked up and moved across country and is now living a pitching wedge from campus. But he seems like a beast and would be a great DE. It says he is still considering Michigan but something just seems fi$hy about his recruitment.

I wish they won't have academic issues, can enroll earlier and compete for the starting position next year. I am tired of seeing Mike Williams running around the field without a clue.

1) Mathis (if we can't get Joshua Shaw)
2) Cullen Christian
3) Tony Jefferson or Sean Parker (whoever'd commit first)
4) Aramide Olaniyan (he's smart I really like that)
5) Rashad Knight

If we get these guys to go along with the guys we already have, I will be very very happy!

Interestingly, A. Olaniyan's GPA is only 2.8 according to his Scout.com profile. That, of course, does not automatically mean that he is NOT smart, but it doesn't exactly say, "Wow! Genius at work." Thus, it is odd that he has offers from most of the high academic schools (Vandy, Stanford, Duke).

Perhaps, the 2.8 is a typo...

Anywho, the guys we are most likely to get (btw, Sam Webb thinks UM will possibly sign as many as 27 for 2010) are IMO:

1) Cullen Christian
2) Tony Grimes
3) Clarence Murphy
4) Josh Furman
5) Jatashun "Big Tex" Beachum
6) Adrian Witty (remember him?)
7) ???????? (probably a de-commit from some other team late)

I think grimes is sick. I watched his tape he is good, and sometimes people need to not look at his stars and be like "aww man he is only a 3*" look at his OFFERS

Alabama
Ohio State
Georgia
Miaim, FL
South Carolina

If all of those teams want him to play Defense I am really high on him!

By the way, I thought Tony Jefferson's family was rumored to be considering a move to Florida, not Josh Shaw's. Am I wrong? Perhaps both families are moving...?

I definitely have read the same thing about Jefferson, and I was also surprised about Josh Shaw's family possibly moving to FL.

Edit: For some reason this post was negged, as was the one below, and same for one above. I plussed them to counteract the stupidity.

Where did you hear that UF has passed on him basically? Not doubting you, just curious, because last I heard was the Florida was rumored to be on top of his list of new schools. If this pans out to be true it could be good for us once he gets to visit. Thanks for the info.
