Some info re:Chris Clark and visits from Sam Webb

Submitted by reshp1 on

There was a bit of a minor dust up between (edit: '15 TE commit) Chris Clark regarding visits and Sam Webb. Apparently Sam exchanged these texts with Clark and then shared his thoughts on the radio and via Twitter

  • Sam Webb: “I’m doing my radio show currently, and guess who folks keep calling in asking about? Lol! I don’t want to misrepresent your position, so thought it better to ask you directly.  Fans wondering if you do indeed plan on taking visits and if you’re still considering North Carolina. Any truth to either of those?

  • Chris Clark: “What’s up Sam. As of right now I’m not entirely sure what I’m doing. It’s definitely a possibility."

Apparently Clark did not want that information shared and was initially upset but the misunderstanding has been cleared up.

Probably the most interesting part is that Michigan coaches had not spoken with him yet but after seeing the Sam Webb tweet, are now on the case and probably working hard to dissuade Clark and at least informing him of The Policy.

Later I asked a follow-up question about whether he had addressed any of this with the Michigan coaching staff yet, and he said he hadn’t up to that point. I included that in the blog as well.

About 30 minutes later he sent me a message expressing his displeasure with me tweeting the info and was upset that a Michigan coach had questioned him about the message I’d posted.

It sounds like the kid is still trying to figure some things out, so let's all just take a deep breath and give him some space.

As much as I like to see recruits commit early, I kind of wish they would wait.  Especially with schools like Michigan that have a no visit policy.  I just kind of feel bad for them that they miss out on a bunch of free trips to cool places.  Its the one big perk of being a recruit.

If I put myself in the shoes of an 18 year old kid, I would probably want to use my good fortune of being a top level recruit and visit high profile schools for free just to see what is out there.  Hell, even if it was nothing more than taking advantage of free trips to cool destinations.  I'm not meaning to be nonchalant because Clark is a huge recruit, but I would probably take advantage of OVs as well, IMO.

which is why they should absolutely also institute early signing period and accompanying early official visit program.  listen to most coaches and its what they want.  ive never seen any major reasons to avoid early signing period as long as its accompanied by early officials

Glad that misunderstanding was cleared up. Webb is the best in the biz when it comes to Michigan recruiting and always does everything in a professional manner. That's why he's so connected and well respected among the recruiting community. That being said, February is a very long way away. We'll see what happens.

until it's over.  Not any more, at least.  Hopefully, he sees how effectively Michigan uses Jake Butt when he comes back and can envision himself in the same role.  Hopefully, we have a great season and don't give anyone (like Hand, Harris etc.) reason to think twice.  At times the drama of recruitment becomes a bit much.

He's a young man who wants to make sure what is best for him, good luck to him in whatever he decides.

I only wonder if he is concerned about us recruiting Wheatley so heavily, if he is, he shouldn't be, the TE position will be an important one with multiple guys needed to help make the offense a force.

The young man brought it on himself, though, didn't he?  He's the one that went public about taking more officials, and he's the one that said he was looking around.  If he really wants his space respected, he needs to start respecting it for himself.

He didn't tell Sam Webb, he tweeted the information out himself.  Glad he apologized to Sam, because Sam was only doing his due diligence after he was barraged by calls.  Clark's original tweet supposedly disappeared very quickly, but not quickly enough for the recruit stalkers to panic.  Another case of kids not understanding that social media is by definition not private.

(Along those lines, heard on WTKA there was some problem with Upton/Verlander photos sneaking out of a cloud?)

Clark wasn't sure of the visit policy, wanted to take a couple visits possibly just for fun, didn't expect it to blow up like it probably has, probably feels a little self-conscious about the way he's been viewed after previous commitment swaps and got annoyed that he was being portrayed so much as a flip-flopper when he's been nothing but super pro-Michigan since committing and likely in his mind is still all Michigan. In other words, teenager. Sounds like he's mostly sorted it out, though.

Let's sit back and give the kid a chance.

I want his commit as much as the next blue fan and I hope he ends up in A2.  When he committed it was one of the biggest gets for this class.

Hoke, Nuss and the big house are three great seaons to go blue or stay blue!!! i

All I know is that if I was given a chance to go to a Div 1 school, let alone Michigan. It would be safe to say I wouldn't be playing any crazy games. Maybe it was just how I was raised. I hope this kid finds the answers he is looking for.

Is he really playing games? He's good enough to play football at any school in the country, is it that crazy that he wants to see what's out there? And I understand that he was committed elsewhere before, but I can hardly blame an 18 year old for having trouble making what is almost certainly the biggest decision of his life to date

The post to which I replied accused him of 'playing games' and that implies he's intentionally screwing with people. All I'm saying is that it's a lot easier to say 'if it was me things would be different', when nobody is interested in you than when you have literally dozens of quality options.
