Its a good move for the Texans as they don't have many options, i hope Mallett gets the job.

This has nothing to do with Mallett but I just came across this gif of Brees and it's awesome.

Football. It's just geometry.

I've watched it for a long time and he never misses.

Yeah, I'd like to see Stauskas try this.

Too bad he can't do that outdoors...when it counts.

Like in the Super Bowl

I listen to a lot of sports radio in Boston, but I'm not really an NFL fan. From what I'm hearing this was a huge trade for the pats. Bill loves those extra picks, he's a master of drafting well. An extra 7th is a bit lower than he wanted for Mallett (he was holding out for a first or second), but a 7th is better than nothing.

What'd they get, just a 7th?
August 31st, 2014 at 9:48 PM ^
Mallet is a good enough QB he might as well get a chance. I don't think this will make the Texans title contenders, but good on the Patriots for getting something back. Of course, he was a 3rd rounder when they drafted him, so a 6th some years later seems like a bit of a loss.
August 31st, 2014 at 10:10 PM ^
The Patriots invested a third round draft pick, three years of training under Bill Belichick, Josh McDaniel, and Tom Brady, and ~$2.2M in salary on Ryan Mallett.
All they received in return was a conditional seventh round draft in 2016. Sounds like a good deal for the Texans.
August 31st, 2014 at 10:29 PM ^
Plus he's reuniting with Bill O'Brien so the familiarity is also working in the Texans favor.

you have to have a backup QB, and you'd rather have a decent one. It's like having a home insurance policy you never use - doesn't mean it wasn't worth having insurance just b/c your house never burned down.
I'm sure the Pats think of it as spending a third round pick and cashing it in for 3 years of having a decent backup quarterback (that you thankfully never had to use) PLUS a 6th round pick - better value than plenty of 3rd round picks
August 31st, 2014 at 11:11 PM ^
I don't think any team in the NFL that trades a 2011 third round draft pick plus ~$2.2M, for a conditional 2016 seventh round draft pick, can rationalize it as a positive. Especially when out-of-work, former starting NFL QB's are available as backups at any given time.

just flat out disagree here.
I think you're underrating the value of a worthwhile backup, even if he is never used. I mean, in retrospect if in 2011 the Pats knew Brady would be healthy for every game for 3 years and they would never need a decent backup, they wouldn't have taken Mallett but of course that isn't possible. So yes, if you judge the 2011 pick based on the fact that Brady never got hurt it was a bad pick. But that's unfair since there was no way of knowing Brady wouldn't miss a game for 3 years.
As for the out-of-work QBs, a young guy with a cannon and potential is worth more than, like, Shaun Hill because there's at least a chance he can develop into a quality starter if Brady had a major injury. Again, just b/c you never cash in the insurance policy doesn't mean you shouldn't have gotten insurance in the first place.

The rookie Garapolo was figuring to he the #2 and Mallett was likely to be a late surprise cut. Sure, a 3rd round pick would have been nice, but under the circumstances getting anything at this point works OK for the Pats.

They also had a high level fill in in case brady went down

As a Texans fan I like it. We've come full circle with him. Started out as a top HS recruit in TX, a short stint at Michigan, now back here again. Of course some of the locals hate the fact that Keenum was cut, but oh well.

wasn't high on my list of possibilities.
/you can tell how much I keep up with my nfl team (I don't).

I can't say I'm entirely happy with what the Patriots got back, but it was pretty evident that Mallett wasn't developing at all. For all of his physical gifts, his head just isn't where it needs to be, to at least be the Patriots quarterback. The local radio hosts here called him something along the lines of a "crap Drew Bledsoe" and I think that's valid. Mallett is a player who trusts his arm more than anything. He needs to reel that in at the NFL level because the best QBs are the best decision makers. I don't think he learned that at all.
I know that preseason isn't a gauge of how good a QB is, but I think that's part of how Brady caught the eyes of the Patriots to begin with 13 years ago. Garoppolo's game management, throws and reads just seemed more on than I've ever seen from Mallett.
With that said, I wish Mallett the best of luck in Houston. I hope Bill O'Brien who I still have fond feelings towards from his time here can help turn his career around. Or I guess, better put, push him to reach his potential.

Million dollar arm, ten cent head.

I saw the film Draft Day...and I had the feeling that the qb Bo Callahan, that slid in draft, was mostly based on Mallett.

The Texans starting QB, is Harvard graduate Ryan Fitzpatrick. He has a million dollar head and a ten cent arm.

They could've gotten a TON more if they would've traded him before the draft.
They didn't, he sucked during preseason and the rookie was the clear #2 and now everyone in the league knew they had to get rid of him. The Texans made out because he obviously knows their system so missing their preseason isn't that big of a deal.
I don't know when their bye is, but I bet Mallett plays and plays well for them.

If you read the blogs...3 of Michigan's potential all-time bests never really played at Michigan.
Football can be weird sometimes.

I guess I haven't read the blogs, or at least not ones that would have said such a thing, so I'm wondering if you meant to say "busts" rather than "bests." Nothing against these guys, but I can think of at least 3 M QBs who did pretty well both at Michigan and after.
