Joey Galloway's comments during yesterday's game

Submitted by DenverRob on
Joey Galloway: "I am the fastest person in the big house today." in reference to the interview with shoelace. Denard polite as always said nothing. "Funchess is a bigger body, Michigan needs someone to take the top off of defenses." Funchess, chesson, Hayes and Norfleet all have sub 4.5 speed. Several comments about the interior dline when app state ran the ball when the game was over and back ups were in the game. Chris Spielman can call a game without bias. Robert Smith does a nice job in the studio. Kirk can call a good game. Why is Joey the most biased color commentator? ...and do we get them again this season? I also think the former PSU commentators do a nice job as well with out bias.

I am rewatching and he is even worse. The ref accidentally said late hit when it was a personal foul face mask...and he's arguing why it's not a late hit and how you have to let the defender finish the hit. Dumb ass...that wasn't the call, the refs made a mistake on the announcement. It was clear as day, especially with replay.

This one bugged me as well.  Clearly it was a penalty.  The referee mistakenly announced it as a late hit, but it was a facemask.  Galloway chirping about the defender's feet being allowed to follow through with the tackle as the replay ran showing Gardner's head being turned was pretty bad.

However, nothing will ever top Urban Meyer calling "The Game" while his agent ironed out the final details of his contract with OSU.  He was slobbering all over Braxton Miller.  Michigan won so it more-or-less went ignored, but he was just attrocious knowing any praise or even even keeled analysis he offered up for Michigan could be held against him once he officially took the job days later.

took a swipe at Michigan while being a commentator for the Arizona game Friday. When discussing the App St game Belotti said "I thought Michigan was going to learn something going into our game with them, but I guess they didn't".....referring of course to defending spread teams. Can't say he's wrong, but anyways.

Galloway is really terrible.  It was difficult to listen to him and his constant arrogance.  Hope he blows a vocal chord and shuts it down for the season.

I expect lower production values from the B10 Network, but the commentary, inability to get relevant replays, lack of anyone with knowledge of the rules, etc. is pretty surprising for ESPN. I imagine if you held open tryouts for color and play-by-play you could score a dozen better candidates in an afternoon.

I still can't believe there was no mention of what happened with the timeout right before the third down play for App State when they came back from commercial. The last thing the audience sees before the commercial is a sack, then the broadcast returns and it is third down again. There was another play where a flag was thrown and they mentioned it, but nothing was called and once again they commentators did not offer an explanation.

It was bad enough hearing Joey talk about how great it was, but there is no excuse for how bad the overall coverage was.

Saying Robert smith does a nice job may be the dumbest thing I have ever heard. That dude is a complete joke of an analyst.

Smith is just as bad. His Michigan hatred clearly shows. He & Galloway are probably still mad they never beat Michigan except for the 13-13 game

I find it funny how people here love Desmond Howard for always showing his Michigan bias but hate former OSU players who do the same for OSU.  If you think all ESPN broadcasters should not show bias, that's fine but don't be a hypocrite.  People make way too big a deal about former OSU players calling Michigan games.  The alma maters of the commentators doesn't even cross the minds of the people setting up the schedules for the weeks games and it's not a huge deal.

Thats not a fair comparison.

Desmond is in the studio offering his opinions, biased as they may be.  Galloway is on the broadcast, where commentators are expected to be unbiased and call the game objectively, unless its a ND Fig Thing game on NBC, but lets not get into that...

Until every M game is broadcast by some combination of Dierdorf, drunken Brandstatter, and Zombie Ufer, people around here will be upset. They hate Musberger. They hate Herbstreit. They hate Hammond & Mayock. They hate Speilman. They hate Mike Patrick. They hate all the women (sideline reporters excepted). They hate Danielson & Lundquist. They hate Chunky. They hate all the studio guys except Desmond. They hate the BTN guys. So much hate.

My favorite was calling De'veon Smith slow after he broke off a run that was about 15 yards longer than Michigan's longest from 2013. You'd think that would have been a good time to mention the hole that the line opened, or the discipline Smith showed in letting the hole open and making the cut with authority, or the excellent downfield blocking. You'd think that, because you're not an OSU douche.

He didn't bother me. The fastest guy in the stadium comment came across to me as Galloway making fun of himself. It was mildly humorous. Yeah, he doesn't seem to know our team very well and said some dumb stuff, but that's pretty standard with broadcasting crews.

True, most broadcasting crews don't know the teams intimately, so mistakes get made, but Galloway did seem bent on putting as negative a spin on Michigans performance that he could. Given that potential recruits watch the games, that kind of broadcasting from a rival is borderline unethical.
