MGoBlue release

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan and University of Washington will renew an old rivalry when the two football programs meet for a home-and-home series during the 2020 and 2021 seasons. This will be the 13th and 14th meetings between the two schools.

The Wolverines will travel to Seattle, Wash., for the matchup on Sept. 5, 2020, at Husky Stadium. The return trip by the Huskies will take place at Michigan Stadium on Sept. 18, 2021.

"We are excited to rekindle a rivalry that has showcased some great games and great teams for both programs," said Brady Hoke, U-M's J. Ira and Nicki Harris Family Head Football Coach. "There have been some exciting, down-to-the-wire football games between Michigan and Washington and we anticipate the same type of contests when this series is played at the outset of the next decade."

This will be the fifth time that the two programs have played a home-and-home series.

Michigan and Washington have met on 12 previous occasions with the Wolverines holding a 7-5 edge. U-M has a 3-1 record at Michigan Stadium and is 2-2 at Husky Stadium. The two programs have played in the Rose Bowl on four instances, with each team claiming two championship trophies.

Michigan won the most recent meeting between the two teams. Philip Brabbs converted a 44-yard field as time expired to provide 13th-ranked Michigan with the season-opening 31-29 victory over 11th-ranked Washington (Aug. 31, 2002). Michigan missed three field goal attempts prior to Brabbs first career conversion.

I'm pretty pleased with this. Good history between the two programs, not a team we get to see in the Midwest often, and a cool potential road-trip/opportunity for Pacific NW fans.

They all can't be Oklahoma.

No, they all can't be Oklahoma but the way the athletic department was dragging this out as a major news story to be revealed and then have it be a team we have had a home/home series with 4 times before as well as 4 Rose Bowl meetings in the past...it's confusing and stupid.

Oklahoma has got to be the biggest home/home Michigan has scheduled in my lifetime. And that was announced out of the gate. So why make this big build up for....Washington?

Where are you getting the athletic department dragged this out? I haven't seen UM Football on Facebook posting teaser posts about a big series. We heard the beginning of last week from a reporter with a source close to the administration that two series were about to be announced, supposedly by the end of the week, correct? Then it took a week longer than that timeframe that --again-- did not come from the Athletic Department itself. (Perhaps they were still hashing out details or the agreement wasn't signed until this morning.)

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but I see no evidence that anything was "dragged out" (especially not intentionally) and I've seen no "build up" from the athletic department, only from a reporter with a source in the AD. What did I miss?

I'm pretty sure this all tipped of because of a Dave Brandon inteview with Terry Foster. So, the AD is where the initial news came from.

According to a report from CBS Detroit and local sports radio station 97.1 the Ticket, Athletic Director Dave Brandon told on-air personalities Terry Foster and Mike Stone in a recent meeting that Michigan football will announce two "huge" home-and-home series later this week.

"Terry Foster and Mike Stone met with Michigan Athletic Director Dave Brandon today," the report states. "That's when Brandon dropped the news that this announcement will happen later this week."

Why are people dogging the Huskies (no pun intended, I swear)? They are in-line for 10 wins this year and would have beat our ass red last year. And getting Peterson from Boise is a nice upgrade at coach for them over Sark.

If people are going to bitch about that non-conf schedule, I think it's fair they'll pretty much bitch about anything. Washington and VT home-and-home series.

Well could have done worse - could have done better.  Not "huge" but that's marketing for you.

In our "guess the home and home series" contest only a few guessed Washington...so it leaves 5 peeps with the chance to win a lot of upvotes ;)

Still upset we threw away that game in 2001, I had literally just broken my left arm the night before so I was already miserable and then that 4th quarter happened. That was just an awful weekend all around.

When you're 55 it's somewhat hard to get too excited about upcoming games that are so far out in future you're wondering if things like walking, solid foods and breathing will still be part of your daily game plan by the time they are actually played.

And I have all intentions of not only walking, breathing, eating solid foods, but other functions of a more intimate nature.  Games have to be scheduled at some point, what with all the pissing and moaning about the current schedules I'd think any improvement would be embraced.  I couldn't be more wrong.

That said, there is still an open date in 2018 and two in 2019 that need to be filled.  I rather hoped this announcement would have filled a couple of those.

This....is..... AWESOME....

I now will have a legitimate reason to show up to Husky Stadium in my Michigan Gear.  Before it was just to troll all the UW fans.

When Nebraska came to Seattle a few years ago the town was a sea of red, hopefully, we can represent in the same way.  Husky Stadium is unique and is worth the visit.  Their recent renovations are top notch.

For comparison sake a few Big 10 teams current non conf in out years (mid/late teens, early 20s)

MSU - Arizona State, Miami (YTM), Boise State

OSU - Oklahoma, TCU, Oregon, Texas

PSU - Pitt, Syracuse, West Virginia, Va Tech (very East Coast centric)

NEB - Oregon, Colorado, Oklahoma, Colorado [2 separate home & homes with CO]

WIS - BYU, Virginia Tech, Washington St

IA - Iowa is the new Wisconsin, horrid non conf

So aside from OSU which has 3 glamour programs I'd say we line up with the rest decently well with Oklahoma, UCLA, VA Tech, Washington, and Arkansas.  PSU obviously does not want to go outside of a 500 mile radius.

I had Georgia and Missouri so this would be equivalent of the west coast Missouri.

Go to the game at UW (I know, I know, clear your dance card almost a decade from now...)

It's an awesome experience. I'm glad to see them back on the schedule.

For those wanting Stanford but complaining about Washington I don't see these 2 as very different.  Until 2007 Stanford was Northwestern of the 1970s.  No guarantee they will be good in 6-8 years.  Washington actually has a better long term track record than Stanford.

A quick look at U-WA's schedule shows they play Wisconsin in 2018 and 2021.

Sark was building an interesting team - that's why he got a better job at USC.  They beat Illinois in Chicago, they lost to Stanford by 3, they destroyed Arizona, they lost by 10 to a rapidly improving UCLA program.  They decimated the bad Pac 12 teams like Oregon State, Cal, and Colorado.

Obviously we have no idea what they will be in 6-7 years but the odds of them being better or equal to Stanford are significant.

them to be.  15 to 14 conference championships. Both claim two national championships. .613 to .575 win percent. Washington leads in all categories, of course.

Stanford with a heisman.

No offense to northwestern, but even if you exclude Stanford's recent run, Stanford is a step up football history wise.

Anyways, I wouldn't be surprised if Washington was the far superior team compared to Stanford in 2020.  Because I can see the future, obviously.

Could be, I only looked back about 25 years for Stanford.  Maybe in the 40s,50s they were great :)

Just checked - they won the Pac 12 in 1924, 1926, 1927, 1933, 1934, 1935, 1940, and 1951.  So in the modern era of football Stanford has struggled. They did have 2 championship years in 1970-1971 and then 92.  Other than that, a lot of losing.  You could say Gary Barnett did similar things for Northwestern for 5-6 year period.. so I'll couch my statement that in the post war era Stanford is not that different than Northwestern or Purdue.

Since 1980 here is the winning % of their coaches:

  • .500
  • .364
  • .464
  • .471
  • .549 (Willingham)
  • .303
  • .261
  • .580 (Harbaugh)

They were decent in the 70s with a winning % of just over .500

Larger point is, if you are 14 years old you think Stanford is the bomb.  If you are 50, then Stanford struggled for very long stretches.

great teams peppered into... well what you'd expect.  But the cardinals being decent pre harbaugh is before my time.  I was 12 in 92, so I have no idea how good that team actually was.

I actually intended to write a reply about the gulf between UW and the Cardinals. it didn't turn out that way.

The Huskies were pretty decent in the nineties.
