The defense was its usual crappy self. The offense has regressed over the course of the season, and this game was a microcosm of that trend. This is the key stat: 7 trips to the red zone resulted in the following: TD, FG, FG, TO on downs, TO, TO on downs, TO
October 31st, 2009 at 7:42 PM ^
That's a brutal stretch. I'm kind of surprised that the offense hasn't improved, given how thoroughly competent to good they looked early in the year. Injuries taking a toll? I know Molk is out, and that can't possibly help given the depth on the OL, but aren't the skill guys still fairly healthy?
October 31st, 2009 at 9:20 PM ^
The OL didn't play exceptionally well tonight, and Tate got more scrambly than usual. He turned the ball over a few times because of it.
ps: Others haven't said it yet, but thanks (seriously) for staying classy.
October 31st, 2009 at 8:26 PM ^
They can't throw, can't catch and nobody can hang on to the damn ball, especially the QBs. Are they trying too hard or not hard enough?
October 31st, 2009 at 9:49 PM ^
I have sent a delegation to California to investigate whether or not Tate was playing with a regulation-size ball when he was there. My best explanation for the ball-coughs is that he's just not used to these big footballs.

I want pictures of you cutting down twigs on Monday Brian. No excuses.
October 31st, 2009 at 7:24 PM ^
break out the single malt. If you are going to drink enough to kill the pain, let it at least be decent stuff.....
October 31st, 2009 at 7:27 PM ^
All I have to say is thank you Brian.
October 31st, 2009 at 7:31 PM ^
Good move. I think mid-Monday, people back at work will help to calm the masses a bit. This was a horrible loss, but looking back it really should not have been a surprise. Let people digest a bit and then we can go back at it.
October 31st, 2009 at 7:32 PM ^
And may I recommend doing this almost every time after a loss. This board is almost pointless on a weekend especially after a loss.
And I'm already ahead of you. Johnny Walker Black, hope I don't scare the trick or treaters, with my alcohol smell.
October 31st, 2009 at 7:36 PM ^
Thanks for implementing the shutdown, it was needed. Sucks to lose like that but life goes on.
I'm just bummed I won't be back to Duval Street until tomorrow night to ease the pain.
October 31st, 2009 at 7:37 PM ^
If you can't post a thread, the Back button on your browser should save the text.
And thanks for the bonus kittens...that officially is the best thing that's happened today.
October 31st, 2009 at 7:43 PM ^
I'm so glad you did this. It was beginning to feel a little too Valenti in here.
In fact, I'm considering calling my lawmaker and urging him to sponsor legislation that would make it illegal for any sports fan to post to any internet forum for 48 hours following a loss to a team with a worse record.
October 31st, 2009 at 7:54 PM ^
I sense a great deal of Lagavulin time coming up in the next 14 months.
October 31st, 2009 at 7:59 PM ^
i did nothing, win or lose, to help this teams outcome. and i understand that. but in losses like these, i feel bad for the grahams, minors, carlos and stevie browns, guys who spurned other perennial powerhouses to come to michigan to win big ten titles and compete for national championships. now those guys are losing to a 1-6 illini team badly and may leave michigan with perhaps the worst 4 year record ever. they deserve much, much more.
thats what i feel bad about and no one on this board can call me a fair weather fan for questioning what rr has done so far.

Very well said. Excellent way to think about it. (If thinking about it can be "excellent" in any way)

A "Gone Fishing" sign with appropriate graphic for Sat-Tue at least. Let us all drink heavily and then go spout off on GBMW or Black Heart Gold Pants.

I started getting my Jamison on sometime near the end of the third quarter....
A two day break is about the right amount of time.

I had to chug one of the high content stouts I brewed...time to move on the strong stuff right now.

I support it. Plus Henri the Otter and the Kittens made me feel just a little bit better.

First OSU has all the dainty sparkles, now I see littlesota has them too.
October 31st, 2009 at 9:02 PM ^
be thankful I edited my long-winded complainst of the game. However, I will leave the unpopular title. Alcohol is helpful but frankly this year is not sitting better with me than last so it's equal for me.
October 31st, 2009 at 9:07 PM ^
Perhaps we could add in a Sad Panda, or a Wombat of Frustration? Both, especially the Frustration, are appropriate after a loss.
November 1st, 2009 at 1:02 AM ^
I vote for Sad Panda. Something about that just conveys the mood. So, SO beyond frustration. Just sadness. Endless black hole of sadness.
/jesus, I'm emo right now.

I think I'm most disappointed in the fact that I haven't had one trick-or-treater tonight. I have free candy you little shits.

and having a younger sister who is a U of I grad to boot. Today, I especially feel the pain of U of M grads living in the State of Michigan who are Sparty haters.
November 1st, 2009 at 1:59 AM ^
I am with you. I grew up a U of I fan (family- grew up downstate); ex went there; all my fam did; live in chicago. I couldn't shake it- being upset. Went downtown to what should have been an awesome halloween party- couldn't shake being in a funk over this game (probably had something to do with watching it at Duffys and drinking the whole way through). This is fucking awful. Where do we go? What do we do? As a team? I am just so bummed, man. Was so angry; now just abject sadness.
I mean, losing is one thing. But like that? I have friends who I classify as "RR haters," and just think they are stupid. But what was this? I am searching for answers. Yes, it's 2 am. Which actually isn't early tonight- bars open until 5; actually 6 b/c of daylight savings. I literally couldn't shake being upset and just wasn't having fun at a party that was actually awesome. God. This is the pain of fandom.
Are we the new Nebraska? Oh god. Oh. God. Time for The Smiths? Andrew Bird? Andrew Bird. He's not nearly as sad. Where is the light at the end of the tunnel? We can't go back- we can only go forward. But where is that taking us?
The only thing that made me feel better re: U of M today was when a friend of mine who is a HUGE hater (always) on the program admitted, "you were right about Lloyd- 8 wins is way harder than I ever thought. I was wrong." Yeah. That's what made me feel better. What is rock bottom? Is this it? Where is it? Please tell me this is it. The HORROR didn't hurt like this. Not to me, at least, and I was there.
/sorry for the emo rant.
EDIT: Yes, I realize I said I was at an "awesome" party like 3 times. God. I'd neg the shit out of me sober. "Really?!?! Awesome party, bro?!!" Yeah. i know. Just trying to convey that I couldn't shake the terrible funk I've been in since this game. Although my buddy did dress up as Jesus, and there were great jokes... Didn't matter.

and then learned that I don't have enough points to start a diary. That's right. The response of the leading Michigan blog -- a concept entirely dependent on the exchange of information -- is to stop the exchange of information. And the denizens of the blog uniformly applaud the idea. At a time when there should be a fervent exchange of ideas over the next 48 hours, there is a shut-down in the fervent exchange of ideas. RichRod may or may not have jumped the shark today. Notwithstanding my extreme frustration, I am not sure that much has changed about where we are at, and I'm not sure there is much reason to doubt that he will make us better if we stick with him. But I am absolutely convinced that today MGoBlog officially got sufficiently full of itself to bid it adieu. And so I do. If you can't go to a Michigan blog to share views with your fellow faithful on a day like today, then what the fuck is the point of the blog in the first instance.
October 31st, 2009 at 9:39 PM ^
it's Brian's (and Tim and Paul's) blog, he can do what he wants. This "exchange of ideas" meme is bullshit. This will at least allow for some measure of sanity, rather than debasing the site into a forum for panic and haste
October 31st, 2009 at 9:40 PM ^
I think you did just share your view. It's not like diaries are an enumerated constitutional right, for god's sake.
October 31st, 2009 at 9:41 PM ^
This is Brian's blog to share what he wants. If you want to share your own thoughts, you can leave comments or have your own blog.
You can still post the diary come Monday. Brian's M.O. is to let the emotion of the game wear off before making a post. It appears he is asking that those who have diaries or forum topics, that they do the same thing. That seems more than reasonable.
Adieu.
October 31st, 2009 at 9:46 PM ^
I'm pretty sure your ideas aren't as important as you think they are.
November 1st, 2009 at 1:09 AM ^
But shut up. Just shut up. The guy who made this blog and doesn't ask for your money makes the rules. You don't. Go join Scout/Rivals. Go to MLive. I don't care. If you're going to make the point you're making, do it in a more eloquent/intelligent way. You're late to a sweet party and complaining about the lack of white wine. Just shut up.
November 1st, 2009 at 10:14 AM ^
You joined exactly six days after I did. I got to the point total I have by reading, contributing and (sigh) commiserating. I have occasionally been neg-banging for being stupid, (and sometimes because people heartily disagree). But I have never, never, never, ever questioned how the MGoBlog and its posts are managed. I don't make the rules, and neither do you.
November 1st, 2009 at 10:20 AM ^
you joined in mid-Sept. and have 1035 points. I officially christen you as a point whore. And I mean that in the most affectionate way possible.
November 1st, 2009 at 10:41 AM ^
In the sense that I cared how many points I have. I was pointing out to the poster that were he a regular contributor of good content, he'd have plenty of points to post whatever and whenever he wanted.
November 1st, 2009 at 10:43 AM ^
no worries.
November 1st, 2009 at 11:05 AM ^
I really don't post that often, but I take advantage of Brian's "MGoBonusPoints" promotions. I'm saving up for that weekend in Ypsilanti, but I may donate them to a good cause.
November 1st, 2009 at 12:48 PM ^
Can I be the Madam of the point whores?
November 1st, 2009 at 11:10 AM ^
Is there anything stopping you from posting your diary somewhere else. You could go to multiple other blogs/forums, or better yet, you could start your own.
Of course, this method would likely result in fewer people reading what you have to say. Your complaint would be more accurate if you were saying that you were being denied the right to publish in a forum where you could reach a large number of potentially interested readers. This complaint, however, is analogous to my complaint that the New York Times won't publish the opinion piece* that I sent to them.
*For those of you interested, my opinion piece surrounds the issue of military spending. Specifically, it proposes that we apportion funding to the creation of a rather powerful new weapons system.
