OT: Lollapalooza

Submitted by Jaqen H'ghar on

Curious to see how many board members are attending/watching the live stream. Lolla is a great festival that really balances up and coming artists with blockbuster acts so you can really see just about any type of act and genre

Highlights of the festival so far for me have been Fitz & The Tantrums, Hozier, Lucius, Jacob Plant,  Above and Beyond, Spoon, Martin Garrix, Duke Dumont, and obviously Eminem brought down the house

Looking forward to Chromeo, Avett Brothers, Sebastian Ingrosso and Chance the Rapper today

Who have you guys and gals seen so far that has impressed?

Link to the livestream is below along with the schedule for all three of the channels.

had tickets to Saturday but saw they were going for a lot on stub hub so I decided to sell. I really wanted to see Wildcat Wildcat so I watched the live feed.

Never heard of most these people. I'd honestly rather go see wayne, 2 chainz, flocka, or any other famous rapper than wildcat wildcat lol

You must have missed Outkast last night. Andre 3000 was unreal.

Also, just like... my opinion and stuff but... the Lolla experience in 2009 was the last great year.

In 2010 they expanded the area for food and drink but left the stage area the same... became way overcrowded. and then of course the internet coverage in 2011 and beyond...

I wish I'd made it this year. Been listening to Outkast since I stumbled into the Southernplayalistic cassette tape as a kid lol. Was just rocking TLB/SB the other day. Andre may still be "the coolest motherfunka on the planet Earth". Glad they're back.
My last Lollapalooza was 09, IIRC. The Bon Iver year, just after For Emma hit. 07 was amazing with the last two acts being Modest Mouse and ending with Pearl Jam headlining Sunday night. As usual they crushed it. Awesome to hear younger "too cool for anything you've heard of" types mockingly debate leaving only to be gushing about how they had NO IDEA how great PJ is live.

I've been hearing that opinion a lot around Chicago.  For my money I'd probably agree, but it depends on your tastes.  Festival experience be damned, Lolla has a solid lineup for rap/hip-hop, radio rock, EDM.  Riot Fest is (or at least presents itself) more in the original "alternative" spirt of Lolla.  No coincidence then that the man who created Lolla is headlining Riot Fest with Jane's Addiction.

Watched Martin Garrix and Calvin Harris on the streams yesterday and they both killed it. Outkast was pretty good from what I saw but I wasn't completely in awe. The place just seems so packed I'd probably only do VIP if there were enough headliners I like to warrant the cost.

Went the past three years but scheduling conflicts ruled this year out.  Also most of the headliners have been there within the same time period...so not much new to see.

Worst Lolla lineup ever. However, I went yesterday, for Outkast primarily but also watched Temper Trap, Fitz and the Tantrums, a little Manchester Orchestra and, unfortunately Foster the People. We stayed on that side of the festival to be able to get good Outkast spots and that we did. They pretty much kicked ass. Crowd seemed pretty into it as well as I'm sure most people there really only knew the radio hits. Their hip-hop lyricism was on point though for the 90s stuff. It was all well done though and I'm glad I went.

Also did Cut Copy after show Friday night since they were opposite of Outkast last night. We were on the railing at the Vic theater for Cut Copy, feet from the band, and that show was a straight up dance party; amazing.

I took my 14 year old son and saw Fitz and the Tantrums, Martin Garrix, and Spoon, with a little Manchester Orchestra. This is the third year taking him, but I think he's too old to be with me now, but still too young to go by himself (in this parent's opinion). We were enveloped in pot smoke the whole time. Martin Garrix (and all the electronic dj music on Perry's stage) is the strangest stuff I've ever seen. I sort of get the mindlessness of it, but I so much prefer connecting with people on the stage, and songs with lyrics. As a late 40-something suburban mom, I love going to Lollapalooza. I totally blend in, there's amazing people watching (really tall guy wearing only a Speedo and the two guys dressed up as vikings were my faves), and I get to check out what the "young people" are into. Plus, music and lobster corn dogs.

I'm no prude, but I saw several young teenagers, mainly girls, unaccompanied and asking for trouble. My first thought was what are their parents thinking?

I've been going with my daughter for several years and she is now 17.  I do give her space and let her pick the acts... Artic Monkeys won over Eminem : (.

It's really a fun bonding time. We brought her up conservatively but laugh about the pot smoke, the really skimpy outfits (yes I notice them), and the bizzare people watching. She is learning to play electric guitar and even has become a fan of some "oldies" rock from my stone age era such as the Cure and New Order last year.

You are so right on how easy it is to blend in. There are lots of really nice kids there who are very accepting of "old people". Some even told me that " I wished my parent would come".

Maybe you should ask your son if he wants to bring a friend next year, sort of best of both worlds? This is a big time in his life, so be there for him, even if he says he is too old. Even if they act like they don't want you around, they do listen to what you say, and watch how you act . He will also brag to his friends, behind your back of course, that he has the coolest Mom around!

Myself and my GF saw Iggy Azalea, Lorde, Eminem (surprise guest Rihanna), spoon, Fitz & The Tantrums, Calvin Harris, Cage The Elephant, a couple foreign guy DJs one at Palladia and one at Perry's. I think that was it. For being 17 Lorde has a bright future. Fitz was great fun to watch. Eminem and Calvin Harris absolutely owned the crowd like none other.

Royal Blood was probably the least talked about band and had the best show at Lollapalooza. They had critical acclaim after performances at Glastonbury and BBC/ Jools Holland but are still unknown here. Think White Stripes meets Black Sabbath- a two guy band that blow the lid off. They have some songs on youtube and their debut album is goign to be released later this month.

I also liked Hozier and Artic Monkeys.

It's a great festival but I believe more than half the attendees don't know much about the bands and just want to see whomever they last heard on popular radio.

Your last sentence is mostly true.  I mean there's plenty audiophiles still going but that's a dying bread as the lineups are getting worse and more mainstream and untz untzy.  I do give credit as they got The Cure last year, Jack White two years ago.  They still get solid acts but a lot of repeats from just a couple years ago (Eminem) and some scheduling has left some to be desired.

I'm not exactly a metal guy but enjoy some good rock, which is also a seemingly dying breed.  I do like Arctic Monkeys and would have seen them if I went Friday.  However, to me they are still a sub-headliner.  Them going on before Foo Fighters at 6 or so a few years ago was perfect for them, but I do understand how they are "blowing up".  However, they wouldn't headline any other festival, yet, only at Lolla, which gets back to their lackluster lineup.

Anywho, getting back to Rock, I saw Ghost B.C last year and was impressed.  By the sounds of it I probably would have enjoyed Royal Blood.

THAT was some act!  I have a blast every time I go and try to see all genres of music, but am surprised by which groups draw the main stages and huge crowds. Last year was excellent in both big acts : Killers, Cure, Mumford and Sons, et al. and "small stage acts"  such as 21 Pilots and Jake Bugg.

This year some of the big stage acts seemed like they should be on small stages.

Royal Blood and  Hozier played in front of 100's and deserved to be seen by 1000's. I didn't complain as I was front center for both.

Eminem was very good but I would have liked to see the Red Hot Chili Peppers come back.

Anyway check out Royal Blood and read about/watch Mike Kerr's guitar playing. It was like watching Hendrix at Monterey - everyone was wondering how does he play three different guitars sounds from one 4 string bass using splitters and different amps. Even Jimmy Page has gone to watch him play.
