Hockey seating

Submitted by Serenity Now on

Alright. I should be going to my first UM hockey game in November. The question is, which sections are "the best" (subjective, I know). I'd definitely love to be as close as possible to the fun.

I'm not driving 12 hours to AA to be told to sit down and shut up. I'll get enough of that at the football game.

Avoid the endzones if you can. Maybe it's just personal because I don't like the vantage point and the nets above the boards in my face.

Yost is amazing so if you get in the building somewhere/ anywhere you won't be disappointed.

I think that is personal; I've always preferred sitting on the end*. Maybe because the last time I sat on the side, I had a seat in the front row and the stanchions made it difficult to see the ends of the ice. It might be a different story if you're sitting back a little further.

I do agree with your second paragraph, though: just being in the building is a good experience. Any seat in Yost is fun.

*Specifically, I prefer the south end because that's where the opposing goalie is for the first and third periods, as well as overtime if necessary. It's a good place to harass the opposing goalie and (usually) to see most of Michigan's goals.

If you are facing the ice from where you enter Yost, the stands to your left are the loud, obnoxious, stand-for-the-whole-game student section, and the ushers usually do not check tickets, so just come stand there.

I sat in Section 17 last year, (the best area along with Sec 18, as Child of Yost posted), and every few games there are parents of students coming to games with them, or older people using student tickets. Never more than a few, but you wouldn't be noticed as out of the ordinary

I think this board could do a substantial OT on hockey chants.

Among my favorites:
~ "Ugly Parents" (and occasionally "ugly grandpa")
~ "Dirty Mullet"
~ Al Montoya was thrown in the penalty box for fighting a few years back. The student section spent five minutes chanting "Free Montoya"

i always liked:

hey [player name], you're a midget!
you're not a midget, you're a pygmy!
you're not a pygmy, you're a dwarf!
you're not a dwarf, you're an elf!
you're not an elf,
you're just short!
you're just short!
you're just short!

Inevitably, one person will remain standing and cheering in an attempt to provoke the student section. That has resulted in some of the harshest chants I've heard at Yost:

"Ugly Grandpa," "ugly Grandma," "ugly fat guy," "ugly bald guy," and (probably my personal favorite) "ugly sweater."

I don't think anything is sacred at Yost, with the possible exception of the young kids playing Score-O.

The best one was during a 2nd round CCHA playoff matchup against UNO. There was a rather busty girl sitting in the visitors section with a very low cut skin tone sweater...The entire student section started chanting "show us your tits!" and "boobs!" until she realized we were referring to her and she covered herself up.

I also love the "We Want Chowda" and "Warm up the Cah" chants after we blew out BU at Yost a couple years ago.

My favorite was at the end of some blowout, both backups were pulled for both third string goalies. The ensuing "goalie, goalie, goalie, sieve, sieve, sieve" was awesome.

when Turco was visiting, thought it was just "Goalie, goalie, sieve." They also did it when Montoya was in the box.

During one game, a friend of mine brought an actual sieve, and threw it onto the ice in the 3rd period of a blowout. The chant of "sieve, sieve" (alternating between the goalie and the sieve) was epic.

A couple of other instances that were similar to this. A few years back Marty Turco visited and was honored during one of the intermissions. For the rest of the game the students were chanting "Goalie! (point to net), Goalie! (point into upper deck at Turco), Sieve!". I also remember one time when Carr was in attendance and the students started, "Goalie! Lloyd! Sieve!".

Those impromptu chants are always hilarious.

I'm not sure there really is a 'bad' seat at Yost. Most of it is personal preference. My vote is anywhere in the student section.

That is where our seats are. Sometimes it is hard to make out what the students are yelling. We have young children so that is not always a bad thing, but is contrary to what your objectives are. I have not ever heard anyone tell someone to sit down at Yost though.

Which game did you get? If you got tickets for the College Hockey Showcase, you'll see some good hockey, but you may miss some of the Yost flavor since most of the students and likely the regular Pep Band will be home for Thanksgiving.

I'm excited to make a few trips to Yost this season. For the third straight year my brother and I are embarking on several Michigan Sports Weekends, consisting of a hockey game and a basketball game: Alaska/UCONN & NMU/PSU

getting the program fired up (before the winged helmets if you can believe that) we used to sit in the ends and switch to whatever side UM was skating towards.

Really not possible to do that anymore is it? Its been ages since I was able to see a game at Yost.

While I cannot recall which game it was, my favorite cheer was a spin-off of "goalie-sieve". Michigan was winning big and had put in the backup goalie. The opponent was down to their 3rd string goalie. After our backup goalie made a fantastic save the crowd started the "goalie goalie sieve sieve sieve" chant. That one is hard to beat.
