Hockey seating
Alright. I should be going to my first UM hockey game in November. The question is, which sections are "the best" (subjective, I know). I'd definitely love to be as close as possible to the fun.
I'm not driving 12 hours to AA to be told to sit down and shut up. I'll get enough of that at the football game.

Avoid the endzones if you can. Maybe it's just personal because I don't like the vantage point and the nets above the boards in my face.
Yost is amazing so if you get in the building somewhere/ anywhere you won't be disappointed.
October 28th, 2009 at 2:17 PM ^
I think that is personal; I've always preferred sitting on the end*. Maybe because the last time I sat on the side, I had a seat in the front row and the stanchions made it difficult to see the ends of the ice. It might be a different story if you're sitting back a little further.
I do agree with your second paragraph, though: just being in the building is a good experience. Any seat in Yost is fun.
*Specifically, I prefer the south end because that's where the opposing goalie is for the first and third periods, as well as overtime if necessary. It's a good place to harass the opposing goalie and (usually) to see most of Michigan's goals.
October 28th, 2009 at 2:23 PM ^
however, OP asks for a section where he will not be told to sit down and shut up. if it were to happen anywhere in yost, it would be in the end zones.
October 28th, 2009 at 2:26 PM ^
Good point - especially in the back. If you're on the West side you're sitting. East side in the student section or near the top of the endzones are the best places if you want to stand for the whole game.
October 28th, 2009 at 2:07 PM ^
If you are facing the ice from where you enter Yost, the stands to your left are the loud, obnoxious, stand-for-the-whole-game student section, and the ushers usually do not check tickets, so just come stand there.
October 28th, 2009 at 2:45 PM ^
That would be great, but two dudes in their late 30`s hanging around the student section.. hmmm, not sure how good that would look. But hey we'll still try...
October 28th, 2009 at 5:18 PM ^
I've seen it before, but generally on the periphery, never the central area.
October 29th, 2009 at 10:48 AM ^
I sat in Section 17 last year, (the best area along with Sec 18, as Child of Yost posted), and every few games there are parents of students coming to games with them, or older people using student tickets. Never more than a few, but you wouldn't be noticed as out of the ordinary
October 28th, 2009 at 2:18 PM ^
Sections 17 and 18 are the best. That's the part of the student section in Michigan's offensive zone for two periods and next to the band.

I also recommend doing some background reading before the game:

It is important to be able to differentiate between the two.

Beat me to it. Huray for hockey chants.
October 28th, 2009 at 2:52 PM ^
I think this board could do a substantial OT on hockey chants.
Among my favorites:
~ "Ugly Parents" (and occasionally "ugly grandpa")
~ "Dirty Mullet"
~ Al Montoya was thrown in the penalty box for fighting a few years back. The student section spent five minutes chanting "Free Montoya"
October 28th, 2009 at 3:14 PM ^
i always liked:
hey [player name], you're a midget!
you're not a midget, you're a pygmy!
you're not a pygmy, you're a dwarf!
you're not a dwarf, you're an elf!
you're not an elf,
you're just short!
you're just short!
you're just short!
October 28th, 2009 at 4:30 PM ^
"Ugly parents" is one of my favorites, for sure. Always makes me laugh. Especially when the parents start making noise back, which only encourages the chant.
October 28th, 2009 at 4:39 PM ^
Inevitably, one person will remain standing and cheering in an attempt to provoke the student section. That has resulted in some of the harshest chants I've heard at Yost:
"Ugly Grandpa," "ugly Grandma," "ugly fat guy," "ugly bald guy," and (probably my personal favorite) "ugly sweater."
I don't think anything is sacred at Yost, with the possible exception of the young kids playing Score-O.
October 28th, 2009 at 5:16 PM ^
Don't forget the unprovoked chants after a goal...slutty sisters, slutty girlfriends haha. Pretty much every chant that comes from the student section is amaizing
October 28th, 2009 at 8:25 PM ^
The best one was during a 2nd round CCHA playoff matchup against UNO. There was a rather busty girl sitting in the visitors section with a very low cut skin tone sweater...The entire student section started chanting "show us your tits!" and "boobs!" until she realized we were referring to her and she covered herself up.
I also love the "We Want Chowda" and "Warm up the Cah" chants after we blew out BU at Yost a couple years ago.
October 28th, 2009 at 4:40 PM ^
My favorite was at the end of some blowout, both backups were pulled for both third string goalies. The ensuing "goalie, goalie, goalie, sieve, sieve, sieve" was awesome.
October 28th, 2009 at 4:58 PM ^
when Turco was visiting, thought it was just "Goalie, goalie, sieve." They also did it when Montoya was in the box.
During one game, a friend of mine brought an actual sieve, and threw it onto the ice in the 3rd period of a blowout. The chant of "sieve, sieve" (alternating between the goalie and the sieve) was epic.
October 28th, 2009 at 5:19 PM ^
Ha, I remember that. Good times.
October 28th, 2009 at 4:59 PM ^
A couple of other instances that were similar to this. A few years back Marty Turco visited and was honored during one of the intermissions. For the rest of the game the students were chanting "Goalie! (point to net), Goalie! (point into upper deck at Turco), Sieve!". I also remember one time when Carr was in attendance and the students started, "Goalie! Lloyd! Sieve!".
Those impromptu chants are always hilarious.
October 28th, 2009 at 8:16 PM ^
that was UM-ND in a second round CCHA playoff series circa 05. and yes that was awesome.
another i enjoyed was against alaska fairbanks towards the end of a sweep, "warm up the sled"
October 28th, 2009 at 5:41 PM ^
A few years ago one of the refs had a thick stache and some of the students started a "porno moustache" cheer. Even the refs were smiling at that one.
October 28th, 2009 at 8:17 PM ^
langseth!
October 28th, 2009 at 10:10 PM ^
And then when it got shaved later, "No Stach, No Cash"

I will not post a picture of what I found when I searched on "you just suck".
October 28th, 2009 at 2:44 PM ^
definitely don't do any image searches for any of the words in my post above..
October 28th, 2009 at 2:41 PM ^
I played goalie for 12 years, up until Junior Hockey (drafted by the defunct Laval Titan). Being French speaking and all, I haven't heard these in English, but I'm sure they're pretty much the same whatever the language.
October 28th, 2009 at 2:36 PM ^
Thanks, I just got two tickets in section 20. Only tickets available that are close enough to hear the chants and the band.
October 28th, 2009 at 4:43 PM ^
Keep an eye out for our fearless MGoLeader... he sits in section 20 these days.
A bunch of students found his face in the crowd at the Niagra game and chanted at him until he sheepishly waved. Classic.
October 28th, 2009 at 4:54 PM ^
"Brian" (whoever he may be) does not do anything "sheepishly." He was merely keeping a low profile, lest the women of Yost go crazy and lose focus on the game.
(But I didn't neg you)
October 28th, 2009 at 4:59 PM ^
I said sheepishly? Clearly, I meant to say smoothly.
October 28th, 2009 at 5:10 PM ^
That's better.
October 28th, 2009 at 5:11 PM ^
Wow, I had no idea I had a real, live, MGoCelebrity sitting in my section. Excellent.
October 28th, 2009 at 4:51 PM ^
Be warned, if you're sitting in Rows 6, 7, 8, or 9; with a lower seat number you'll be sitting right next to the band. Fun to be that close, for certain, but I recommend some earplugs.
October 28th, 2009 at 5:23 PM ^
Row 14. And I'm already hard of hearing, so it shouldn't be that bad.
October 28th, 2009 at 2:26 PM ^
I'm not sure there really is a 'bad' seat at Yost. Most of it is personal preference. My vote is anywhere in the student section.
October 28th, 2009 at 2:34 PM ^
That is where our seats are. Sometimes it is hard to make out what the students are yelling. We have young children so that is not always a bad thing, but is contrary to what your objectives are. I have not ever heard anyone tell someone to sit down at Yost though.
October 28th, 2009 at 4:46 PM ^
Yip! Yip! Yip!
October 28th, 2009 at 5:09 PM ^
Which game did you get? If you got tickets for the College Hockey Showcase, you'll see some good hockey, but you may miss some of the Yost flavor since most of the students and likely the regular Pep Band will be home for Thanksgiving.
October 28th, 2009 at 5:20 PM ^
The Bowling Green game, the night before OSU.
October 28th, 2009 at 6:25 PM ^
Ahh, an excellent choice. The students should be at a fever pitch with the impending football deathmatch to come. Yost should be rocking that night. Giddy up!
October 28th, 2009 at 7:21 PM ^
If it were possible, I'd +10 points you for the "Giddy up!". Thanks for the infos.
October 28th, 2009 at 5:58 PM ^
I'm excited to make a few trips to Yost this season. For the third straight year my brother and I are embarking on several Michigan Sports Weekends, consisting of a hockey game and a basketball game: Alaska/UCONN & NMU/PSU
October 28th, 2009 at 7:23 PM ^
getting the program fired up (before the winged helmets if you can believe that) we used to sit in the ends and switch to whatever side UM was skating towards.
Really not possible to do that anymore is it? Its been ages since I was able to see a game at Yost.
October 28th, 2009 at 7:44 PM ^
While I cannot recall which game it was, my favorite cheer was a spin-off of "goalie-sieve". Michigan was winning big and had put in the backup goalie. The opponent was down to their 3rd string goalie. After our backup goalie made a fantastic save the crowd started the "goalie goalie sieve sieve sieve" chant. That one is hard to beat.
October 28th, 2009 at 9:22 PM ^
I was at the game against State last year at Yost. Oh the glorious chants of "FUCK YOU STATE! FUCK YOU STATE"
