OT-Game Day Rituals

Submitted by weasel3216 on
I know many people that are superstitious about Saturdays, including myself. I am curious to see if anyone has any rituals for game day, do you eat at the same restaurant every Saturday, wear a specific shirt, sit at the same exact seat if you are watching the game at home, etc... I for one always wear the student shirt on Friday and then i wear the home or away jersey on Saturday. Also if you do have a game day ritual, does it have positive results? (Disregard last season for results)

I don't do anything special prior to the game, but when it comes down to it, I have the same seat and clothes on. I wear my jersey, athletic shorts, hat and shoes. They are all maize and blue and have wolverines writing on them, I'm especially fond of the shoes. I also have an all in for Michigan towel that I picked up when I was in the student section of the western game. I am going to start a new tradition this year for the suckeye game. My ma found me some pasta that is maize and blue in color and shaped in the big block M. I'm going to make it and eat just before kickoff against Ohio State and we'll see if that helps....

I find that if listen to the beginning of the game on the radio, then watch the remainder, they lose. I must be in front of the TV before kickoff. I'm finding that uttering expletives within earshot of the wife during the game is not good luck either, at least for any after game festivities.

I'm the kind of person who can't stand when umbrellas are opened inside, but black cats don't bug me at all--so I'm only partly superstitious. I have to be wearing at least something in Michigan colors, and I avoid green and red on any gameday, regardless of opponent. If I'm watching the game at home, I have been known to go add something with Michigan-oriented on it if we're not doing well. The big quandary this fall is whether to hang my Michigan flag. I didn't for the first game (forgot) and then felt like maybe I shouldn't press my luck so I left it down. Then we had MSU, and Iowa..... thought I should revisit that decision, but was out of town for Delaware State so didn't hang it then either. I decided to put it up last weekend for the first time and we know how that worked out. I guess now I don't know whether it leave it up, take it down, or throw it into the fires of Mordor. I stepped on a buckeye the night before the MSU game and wasted loads of psychic energy wondering if it was an omen, and what kind of omen. It was an OSU thing, not an MSU thing....so is it irrelevant? It was on the ground on U-M's campus, is that favorable or not? It hurt to step on it, but it didn't trip me so you could say I dominated it, so is that favorable or not? My kid picked it up and kept it, instead of me throwing it as hard as I could, so is that bad? When I saw my spouse looking through the "Psychiatrist" section of the yellow pages, I shut up about it.

Since the upcoming game is a 3:30er, here's my 3:30 game ritual: 10:45: Wake up on floor, always in pool of urine. 10:55-11: Crawl to bathroom. So freaking tired. 11-11:15: Shower. Wonder why I wake up on the floor in my own urine every Saturday morning, even though I haven't been drunk in months. Maybe I should see a doctor. 11:15-11:25: Slowly dry my Adonis-like body off in front of full-length mirror. Ooooh yeah. Those pecs sure pop. 11:25-11:30: Do something constructive. Probably washing dishes. 11:30-12: Nap 12-1:15: Watch noon football games. At every commercial break, say to myself "okay, time to go get stuff done." 1:15-1:30: Eat three raw chicken legs. This is THE key part of my ritual. The chicken represents good pad level, and the digestion represents proper hip swivel. 1:30-3: Watch noon football games. At every commercial break, say to myself "okay, now I REALLY need to go get some stuff done." 3-3:30: Nap 3:30-7: HEARTBREAK. Or victory. 50/50 7-1: Celebrate or mourn by watching a bunch of episodes of Sex and the City. So good! That Carrie- what a ham!

I don't wipe my ass after shitting for the entire season. Win or lose, I figure that saves me a ton of time--time that can be used for more productive things, like reading the repeat threads of our Scout immigrants.

Well, I try to smoke a big fatty right at kick off, that way when something bad happens it wont irk me as much. And, when its a home game, I just duck into one of the port-o-johns on the inside and do a one-hit. And you guys wonder how I am able to preach patience and calm during the CILs.

Ours is more like a post-game ritual and it involves my wife. She and I have agreed that during the week following a Michigan win we will have sex the number of times equal to the difference in the final score. Let's just say I am still recovering from the Delaware State game. Or is that a fantasy?

Mine involves my nails. At the beginning of the season, I stop trimming my nails. Whenever we lose, I trim my fingernails. If we lose two times in a row, I trim my toenails as well. If we lose three times in a row? Dunno, I hope it never happens again...

I also used to do the "raw chicken leg" thing but found that the onset of salmonella at halftime made watching the games less enjoyable. I now stick to a Michigan sweatshirt when on offense that comes off when we are on defense. Unfortunately, its only worked 8 times in the last 20 games.

idk if this is just coincidence, and when I say this I am working off of a very very small sample size, but it looks like Desmond always wears the colors of the team we are playing that week. (and when I say "always" i mean that he wore a green tie when we played sparty and he wore a blue tie when we played penn state.) I'll definitely be looking out for this from now on to see if its actually a trend, or just a coincidence for those 2 games. Has anyone else noticed this?

Arizona State t-shirt at the Rose Bowl in 1987, wore it every game under my Michigan gear until it became unwearable. During its time Michigan won the Big 10 5 years in a row 4 of them outright. That was a good shirt.
