Have never had a 5 guys burger. No reason in particular. I had an In and Out burger in Vegas and it sucked. Would have rather had a Whopper. Maybe I will grab a 5 guys to see if it is worth the fuss.

That's ridiculous.  5 Guys is good not amazing, but it blows my mind how many people rip on In n Out.  Notice that it's almost never Californians, just someone who "had it once and it sucked."  It's a little different, and sometimes stuff like that takes some time warm up to.  But in terms of fast food burger chains, there is nothing that this country has to offer that it better than In N Out.  That is FACT.

I like the Habit too, but I like their chicken sandwiches so much that I rarely get a burger when I go there.  Their BBQ chicken sandwich is legit.  But their burgers are pretty good.

Kinda like the Langer's example from the other thread - they could have great corned beef, but their pastrami is so good that I'm going to order that almost every time.

I like their burgers and fries, but the name is a misnomer. It's more like, In N wait for half an hour N Out. They opened another one a couple miles from the one nearest my house and I thought that would reduce the traffic a little, but it didn't help at all. I usually end up parking and going inside because the drive through line has dozens of cars in it. My local Carl's Jr. is being renovated (complete tear-down) and I'm starting to go through withdrawal pains.

In N Out is the best burger, I'm rather meh on 5 Guys. I am also on the west coast. You probably went to the In N Out on Tropicana since you were "in Vegas". That place is crazy packed nonstop.

I thought this was pretty common knowledge.  The alumni magazine did an article about him a couple years ago.

EDIT: As a rule of thumb, if there is a well-known company that was founded and owned by a Michigan alumnus, it will likely not be news to most of us years afterward.

No, I don't think it has much of anything to do with this blog, but most of us keep up on what businesses are run by fellow alumni.  That post wasn't mean to be insulting, but just like recruiting news - if it's not new, chances are most of us knew about it.  But I'm not saying the thread shouldn't exist.

It was pretty good when I went, but nothing out of the ordinary. I'd like to go back and try something else, but I don't even remember what I got at this point.

One of my favorite burger places is Stella's in Grand Rapids. If you ever get a chance to stop by, their burgers are stuffed, huge, and awesome. The fries are pretty killer, too.

Casey's Tavern >  Five Guys >  Smashburger > Elevation > BurgerFi > Blimpy Burger > Great Plains > In n' out > Wendy's > McDonald's > Burger King

I had Smashburger once and was not impressed.  The idea of flattening a burger that thin only to leave a dry flat burger doesn't make much sense to me, but maybe I didn't go on the right day.

Awesome burger, but if you get to Oklahoma City, check out Braums (several locations). Better even than Whattaburger.

But my favorite burger joint of all time has to be "Rehab Burger Therapy" in Scottsdale, AZ. The Hangover Burger (1/2 lb burger, fried egg, hatch green chiles, bacon, colby jack) is one of the most amazing things I've ever eaten in my life.

So, bah!, I do not patronize them.  No need for a Five Guys franchise here in Chicago.

Ideally, a burger joint will parade the cow victim before you.  At which point you slap preheated cheese, onion, pickle and a dab of ketchup on the wound caused by the prior diner.  Then you dig in, tearing your chunks from the sad beast like a locust on a cornfield. (Dare I say that I only eat meat that has been prepared rare?)

Five Guys is a non-entity, alum or not. Shame on them, possible exception their fries, those are difficult to screw up.  Five Guys should enable us rare-itans to have it our way.  Until it does, I doth protest.  Bah, Five guys.

There are three that I've been to within 2 miles of Wrigley alone.

5 guys is really solid and pretty pricey. I think my combo was $14 last time.

In N out blows its direct competition of BK, MCD and Wendy's etc. out of the water.

A newer chain around is epic burger and it is similar to 5 guys, but 5 guys destroys them.

Highly recommend trying Edzo's. There is one in Evanston and hear they opened one in Lincoln park somewhere.

All Chicago peeps should try and have Kumas burger. It's a long wait, but worth it on an off hour during the week.

Purists seem to think Au Cheval has the best burger in town, but I just don't get it. Just down the road is grange hall which I think has better burgers.

And if you are on your way to Ann Arbor (or coming back to Chicago), I recommend a stop at Redamak's in new buffalo.

Top burgers in Chicago -- these places have great, simple burgers:

1) Owen & Engine

2) Au Cheval

3) DMK

Kumas doesn't do it for me. The burger is too gimmicky with all kinds of crap on it to disguise what is a very mediocre actual burger.

Someone also mentioned Burger & Butcher - I have had that once and it was really good.

Hot chocolate also has a good burger.

Do many fast food burger joints allow you to pick how your burger is prepared?  Because 5 Guys is not a gourmet burger restaurant.  Similar to an In N Out, it's Wendy's/McDonalds competitor, just better.  It's not a sit down, pretzel bun, $17 burger.  Don't get me wrong, I like those two.  But they have a different time and place.  It's like comparing Jimmy John's during the Zingerman's/Maize & Blue Deli debate.  They can both be good, but serve a different purpose.
