Bending it Like Beckham depends on the Magnus Effect
An excerpt:
"The fact is that the Magnus Effect can change sign," Bush says. "People don't generally appreciate that fact." Given an absolutely smooth ball, the direction of the curve may reverse: The same kicking motion will not produce a shot or pass curving in a right-to-left direction, but in a left-to-right direction.
Why is this? Bush says it is due to the way the surface of the ball creates motion at the "boundary layer" between the spinning ball and the air. The rougher the ball, the easier it is to create the textbook version of the Magnus Effect, with a "positive" sign: The ball curves in the expected direction."

Wait, I thought the Magnus Effect is what causes fans to lose their minds when a certain poster says something negative about a Michigan recruit.
I thought the Magnus effect was posting hot Michigan girls.
And banging Kate Upton when Verlander is busy.
Don't forget about Miranda Kerr.
I'd drag my ass through a mile of broken glass just to hear Upton fart through a walkie talkie
...and for the full nine yards?
I have read this comments over 15 times and still find it hilarious. Visually picturing it is disturbing yet hysterical at the same time. Well done! Great imagery with this comment
Lumberg....
but I've heard in past WC that players complained about the ball "not doing what it was supposed to do" when kicked.
balls are prone to not doing well when kicked. So why does it have to be a subject of discussion here, seeing as to how painful it is just to think about?
I thought the "Magnus Effect" had to do with the Highland Games and the friction to freedom ratio of kilts?
I thought:
...for all we thought about the MGOBLOG knowledge base...it might be time to recalibrate.
Magnus is a trusted Mgoblog poster who coaches and studies football very meticulously, yet doesn't know anything about football and hates Michigan.
Magnus effect is Mike Cox winning the Heisman
That campaign is still accepting volunteers and donations.
This is the French coverage of the free kick described towards the end of the article. The curve on this thing is absolutely ridiculous, which makes it awesome from a soccer standpoint.
The Magnus Effect is when you fart in a bar next to the hottest girl and then make a big deal about how maybe she just sharted herself.
Tom-ay-to, tom-ah-to.
hemispheres man, like a toilet bowl...
I watched that movie just for Keira Knightley. Not gonna lie.
People listen.
As a Michigan aero grad, the aerodynamics of this intrigues me. But screw it, it's 4 a.m. and I'm drunk so I'll get back to it in the morning.
One of the most interesting talks I've ever heard was by the author of this paper: http://ntrs.nasa.gov/archive/nasa/casi.ntrs.nasa.gov/20000112958.pdf
He went into the aerodynamics of swinging a cricket ball, but also volleyballs, tennis balls, soccer balls, and several others. I learned more about aerodynamics in that hour and a half than any class.
This was discussed on Science Friday a few weeks ago. Love physics
I was wondering what the hell magnus had done on these boards to term the name the magnus effect...
