Favorite Michigan Football Game of All-Time?

Submitted by Big Mike on

I would have to say mine was the 2005 Michigan vs Penn st game. I was in third grade at the time and i had been talking a lot of smack to one of my friends who is a Penn State fan (Live in PA) so it was a very important game to me. When Henne darted the pass to Manningham my heart stopped, and everyone in my house went absolutely crazy, i will never forget that moment.

UTL 1. After ND scored I went outside to vent and a few minutes later I heard screaming inside and saw Gallon streaking down the right side of the field and then cutting across the middle.

The football gods were shining on Ann Arbor that night. And it's a feeling I won't forget.

The 2009 game VS ND. After the 3-9 season, I wasn't giving my first game at the Big House a chance. It just blew me away and got me totally hooked.

The most dominating performance by a Michigan team I've ever seen.  Kick started a decade of Michigan victories over PSU.  It is hard to believe 2007 was the last year we beat them.

1997 Penn State and 1997 Ohio are tied for the best games I've ever seen on TV.

UTL 1 was not only the best Michigan game that I've ever attended, but the greatest sporting event that I've ever attended!

I was seven and got in trouble for cussing when Charles Woodson got pushed down on Leaf's 50 yard completion that gave them a chance.

Second would have to be the 2003 Ohio State vs Michigan game. The 100th of the series, both teams were fantastic and BIG HITTERS, and Chris Perry took it to them for 4 quarters. Oh, I miss the days.

My friends and I still talk about that game.

When Perry went down and the stadium was silent, then the whole place was chanting "Perry, Perry.." The guy got up, you could tell he was hurting the whole game, but the guy just demolished them the rest of the game. We were calling that game beast mode way before Marshawn Lynch existed..

I still can't find the words for it, it was the kind of thing that only happens in movies.

Tie for me.  MSU 2004 AKA "Braylonfest".  Down 27-10 with under 6 minutes to go, taking shit all game from druken MSU fans and then the comeback started with a field goal.  I have NEVER heard the Big House that loud and the place literally shook (watch the replay of the game and you'll see what I mean) during OT.  I was screaming at the MSU fans "not dead yet" as it unfolded and left the game with zero vocal cords and my feet and hands were bleeding from hitting the stands.  Totally wild game.

Rose Bowl 1998 where we won the MNC for the first time in my life.  Unbelievably exciting game with a crazy finish.  Afterwards the band set up right in front of our section and team ran into the stands high-fiving everyone and we all sang the victors over and over and over and over till we couldnt sing anymore with the team.  I still get chills thinking about it.

A few years ago I had cancer surgery and right before I went under the anesthesiologist told me to go to my "happy place".  I went back to Pasadena that day.

Braylonfest was one of the most memorable games I've attended.  There was this obnoxious, fat ass Spartan fan standing in the aisle, pointing at all the UM fans while signing his insignificant fight song.  He was happy as a pig in shit while we all just sat on our hands.

Watching that game unfold and listening the crowd get louder as the skies grew darker was such a great experience.  I was there with my young son (current UM student now), and it was an onforgettable moment.  I never saw fat boy after the end, but I'm sure his expression was glorious.

That was a great game. We were getting owned for 3 quarters.  Stanton went down and it was all over from there. It was my first time ever at the Big House, I had flip flops on and had to take a piss...bad mistake.  Taking a leak shoulder to shoulder in the floor just soaked my feet.  Getting that W made it worth it.  My 2nd favorite game I attended was at MSU when Perry toted the rock like 50+ times.  That was great to see as UM had a bull of a line.

24-12 -- the real start of the Bo era -- has got to be hands down the choice. I was hired by ABC to assist in the production and before the game, they were worried about keeping fans interested in the second half, since they were assuming OSU would be up be several touchdowns by then.

You were in 3rd grade in '05? God I'm old.

Anyways. I think it's between the first UTL game and...the '95 OSU game. I think that was the "Eddie who?" year...if not, whatever year that was.

By far.

My friends and I couldn't find anywhere to watch the end except for ricks of all places.

The last few minutes there was no music, no one buying drinks, just everyone stationed around the tvs. The group cheer when Michigan scored to go ahead was the net with complete silence as Norte dame scored again. Just to watch denard roll out and hit gallon down the sideline you could feel the anticipation mounting. No one was making a sound. Then when denard threw the fade and round tree caught it, it was the loudest cheer I had ever heard not being at a stadium. Besides being at the stadium I wouldn't have wanted to be anywhere else than with all those people. To see a bar with that reputation have everything stop for the team was incredible.

but I think it was 1991, UM vs Notre Dame.  Elvis threw a pass on 4th down into the end zone that Desmond layed out completely horizontal to catch...and win the game.

that game was the most excited I have ever been as a child...

I remember running that play every time we played football...

The best game I ever attended was the OSU game in 1997.  The elation was tangible.

Might not be my favorite or the best game I can remember. But this was the game that got me hooked on M football for life.

I was 10 going on 11, and its one of my very first football memories. I succintly remember thinking "incomplete, motherfuc-mkfn*726smnsd" but somehow Dez got under it. Amazing catch.

Yes, it was 1991.  Desmond made the catch on a long pass on 4th and short, made the cover of Sports Illustrated (back when print mattered), and kicked off the campaign that ended with "Hellllllo Heisman!" by Keith Jackson on the punt return against OSU.

Magical game.

MSU 2012.   I took my dad and we sat at the 50 in the 20th row.  First time I was at a UM game with my dad since he took me in 1989 (to my first game ever... trounced Wisconsin)

My dad always said he was both a MSU and UM fan and always rooted for the underdog in the each individidual game.  That always bothered me (considering he sent both of his kids to Michigan).

But, after that field goal... seeing him jumping up and down and going crazy it was obvious to me (and for the first time to him) that when push-comes-to-shove he's a Wolverine first.

Easily Under the Lights, was sitting in the 5th row along the goaline on the opposite side of where Roundtree caught the game winning TD. I have a chubby right now just thinking about it...

...'69 OSU is the baseline against which all great Michigan victories are measured. And for a ten year old, it made each subsequent M/OSU game day feel like Christmas morning. At least until I turned 32.

However, that was a TV experience...live is undoubtedly the 1980 Rose Bowl, also a Bo first. We absolutely smashed Washington with a team that could have won the NC if it hadn't stumbled against ND and South Carolina at the beginning of the season.

Really hard to argue with this one.  Even though I grew up decades later, I knew all about this game from all the videos I watched & books I read as a kid.  This game was one of the greatest upsets of all time and launched a golden age that would last until just a few years ago.  Great football, great personalities, huge implications - this one has it all.

In terms of going for one that I actually attended, that's a bit tougher.  I'd probably have to go with Braylonfest, although the competition is stiff (2002 over Washington, 2005 PSU, and Gardner's Hail Mary & OT win over NW are all high up there as well).  I was a freshman, sitting iny row 12 because my senior brother was studying abroad that year.  It felt like my ears were overflowing with sound it got so loud in there, and just the pure delight of watching Braylon bring it home again & again into the end-zone right in front of me.

Also, a little side-note for any other Prof. Ralph Williams fans out there - he came into class the next Monday & said, in his inimitable Williams way, "This Saturday I attended my first ever Michigan football game ... WOW!!!"

Lots of great games have been mentioned, but if you actually saw this one--and the look of utter disbelief on the Ohio fans and players at the end, their absolute incredulity and despair--and remember how that prick Woody ran up the score the year before, there has never been a more satisfying win in the last 45 years.  Ever.

for that one vs. UCLA.  greg robinson (YTGR) and his family are long-time friends.  i had to be a bit muted about my michigan fandom, but yeah, that was a dandy in the rose bowl.

Seats in row 30, it was crammed for most of the game, then two girls just peaced out in the middle of the third quarter. Got some more breathing room and it was all we could do to not fall and die the rest of the way from cheering.

UTL 1 was unbelieveable.  The Big House was rocking.  Electric.  And usually I'm not one for pom-poms...but once the entire stadium got going that was pretty cool.

The 2008 Capital One Bowl against Florida, for a couple of reasons. First of all, Henne, Hart, Jake Long, etc. were the first group of seniors that I really fell in love with as a fan, and, although there were disappointments at times, this was a perfect sendoff for them. Secondly, it was Lloyd Carr's last game. Thirdly, NO ONE expected us to win against the mighty heisman winner and his team full of "SEC speed." Like seriously, I remember the pundits picking us to lose like 45-14.
