Really sucks if these kids are eating this up the way this guy says they were. Not surprising from urban though.

Like (allegedly) Franklin telling Peppers we were going on probation for the Gibbons case, Miles telling recruits Carr had Parkinson's, Urban(?) telling recruits Hoke was going to the NFL.

That would solve everything! We cant get mad at Urb for being who he is, we can work harder, coach better and do are talking on the field and this problem will go away. Personally I think it makes us look week when we complain about things like this.

We should respond by showing recruits a ten minute video of Urbz coaching up Aaron Hernandez, patting him on the back and high fiving him. And then explain how his coaching taught his star tight end to be a murderer. That would have the same level of honesty as what ohio is doing

It probably turns some people off though. I know my visit to MSU years ago for school mentioned every area that MSU was better than "that school in Ann Arbor" a handful of times. I didn't know if I was visiting MSU or the University of Anti-Michigan

The big bad coach is being mean.  Does it matter?  Are there people here who are genuinely upset by this?

It doesn't help that Michigan has to be pretty easy to negatively recruit these days.  Props to Urbs for doing his job.

It would be news if he weren't negative. I'm more surprised that he didn't focus in the positive.

So M sucks balls is his message. That means kids will go to another school, not ohio.

Hoke is undefeated in moral victories against OSU. And the new Michigan standard is moral victory >>>> actual victory. Can't recruits see and understand this?!?!?!

Well, not that this should surprise anyone really.......if the recruits have a television or internet connection this info is all out there. Urban is just doing his job. He's not stupid. He is a dick...a dick of low character it seems....but he is a winner. And winning trumps all. Consistency and winning. Until Brady turns this around, this is what we have.

Seems like Meyer got every single kid he's going head-to-head with Michigan on and had dinner with them and started spewing nonsense.

I have so many thoughts on this...some rational, some irrational.

#1: "Fuck HIM. Like fuck that guy. I hate him."

#2: "Welp, shit like this hits with recruits...I'm going to get negged to high hell on MGoBlog if I say this outloud, but they gone...even Weber supposedly has a new top 3 with no Michigan."

#3: "I hate Urban so much, but this is pretty smart...just wish he wasn't a dick and a liar."

#4: "One thing I do like is how aggresive and creative this is...I would NEVER want Hoke to negative recruit, but why can't he beequally as creative, just in a positive manner?"

#5: "Continuing on my last thought, again, Meyer is an ass. But thinking "who am I going head to head with Michigan on?" and getting those guys in the same room and recruiting them together is very smith. Why can't Hoke do something like that...but recruiting Michigan rather than lie on Ohio?"

#6: "This is just going to be another nugget the Hoke haters, and I'm not one have stored away. Because Franklin and Meyer are thinking outside the box and Hoke is still recreating the 90s. Is Hoke even capable of thinking outside the box?"

#7: "Damn, I can't stand Urban Meyer - I hope he has another bout with exhaustion like he's on the Oregon Trail or something."

#8: "I hope Michigan destroys OSU this year....Gardner's last chance and he shows Braxton Miller up on the national stage."

#9: "Who's worse, Urban or Tressel? People will say Urban now, but they forget, Tressel cheated. Like blatantly. He also was more SEC than most realize, but not like Urban...no one is like Urban."

#10: "Ah, I HATE that guy! Hoke needs a creative way to respond. We need innovation in our recruiting and those damn photoshop edits aren't doing it. Not negative recruiting, just shit that builds excitement and takes the focus off 7-6."

#11: "Screw it, just win. Win every single game. Go Blue."

I'm sorry but I dont speak "twitter".  Who is the source of this message anyways?  It appears to be something third hand from a "friend" and not from someone actually at the alleged dinner.

Not saying it didnt happen but how do we know it happened?

LSAClassOf2000

Several searches of Twitter and the Interwebz have turned up only the corresponding Eleven Warriors thread about this same tweet, and while our Buckeye counterparts - those who have posted there to date anyway -  aren't terribly concerned about the content or the ethics of the message, they do at least take the time to point out that they themselves found no independent confirmation either.

mGrowOld

June 2nd, 2014 at 9:27 AM ^

So we have no independent confirmation of the veracity of the source or that the meeting even happened yet we're just sure it did because somebody tweeted it?

Just like the alleged letter from the MSU guy who claimed long-time season ticket holders were being threatened to be moved if they didt buy more tickets I'm calling Bullshit on this one until I see something more concrete than a random, single, uncoroborated tweet.

Streetchemist

June 2nd, 2014 at 9:39 AM ^

The tweet guy isn't the source. He just screenshotted the post from a Facebook group I'm in. It is second hand knowledge. The picture doesn't include the part where he said the info came from a friend who was at the alleged dinner with his son who is being recruited by OSU.

But we all know this happens in recruiting.  We need to WIN GAMES.

I have a feeling that he didn't mention that 24 straight wins resulted in 0 conference championships, and 0 bowl wins.

June 2nd, 2014 at 9:01 AM ^

I guess the head coach of our rival should take the "high" road and not point out the disarray our team has been in whether it be the coaches or the players. Im sure what he meant to say is that Michigan is a great school and if they choose Michigan over ohio then they will be developed just as well... maybe even 3x better.

/s

Going off of what this "source" claims 18 minutes devoted to trashing us is a bit excessive, if it was me I probably would have capped it around 10 minutes.  Can't blame him for being aggressive with 3 top 50/100 prospects on campus. We need to win games point blank period and provide less ammunition.

Surprise, surprise, Urban Meyer is a douche.

Anyway, every coach gets a chance to impress recruits. Urban Meyer tries to impress recruits by talking s*** about Michigan. Brady Hoke tries to impress recruits with playing in the Big House, wearing the winged helmet, so on and so forth. To a certain extent, all coaches are salesmen of their own program. You're either good at sales (and both of these guys are) or you're not (and you get fired because you can't recruit), which is essentially the same rule that applies to car salesmen, insurance salesmen, door-to-door vacuum salesmen, etc.

Of the two of the biggest peeves I've had with the current state of the program, one of them is the logic in stacking the schedule along with playing in EL two years,  while the team was in a big transition...  wouldn't it be better to schedule powder puffs until we get a full veteran roster ?  I mean, passing on Alabama for a sure win, was the smarter move, in the current scenario... for our record the past three years with 4, 4, 6 losses... isn't looking good to recruits...  better to see 2, 2, 3, until we can rebuild again.    Many here may argue against my notion, saying that we gotta compete with the best to become the best, and in a normal year, I'd agree, but not when we are rebuilding.

For the 7-6 record ALLOWS a guy like Meyer to negatively recruit....  because if we were 10-3 last year, Meyer's only diss would be that they play "powder puff" schedule, but that would lend much less vitriol to a recruit, as plausible deniability would give benefit of doubt in a recruits mind.

Now the only solution is to actually win and get to 10-3 at minimum, for if not, this was, in my opinion, a terrible misstep that was totally unnecessary.   Others also may argue that stacking our schedule was for recruiting, and I get that, but not now... not now.

BlueCube

June 2nd, 2014 at 11:06 AM ^

so to anticipate that you are going to have this situation would be unrealistic.

As far as the MSU games are concerned, the schedule is set by the conference and not by Michigan. I'm sure Michigan is not happy about this and fought as hard as they could against it.

Which highly rated HS kids did Urban make decent NFL stars? Tebow, Rodriguez, Alex Smith, Percy Harvin (excluding kickoff returns, which is all natural ability)? Go to OSU and become the next... (cricket, cricket, cricket)?

Magnus

June 2nd, 2014 at 10:43 AM ^

If I'm a high school kid and you tell me I can become the next Tim Tebow, I'm buying. I don't think many people would turn their nose at winning a Heisman as a sophomore, winning two national championships, getting drafted, and bouncing around the NFL for a few years. Tebow got plenty of fame and endorsements to satisfy most of these guys.

When it comes down to it, colleges can produce big-time players regularly. Michigan has done it. So has Ohio State, Alabama, Texas, USC, etc.

But the all-time NFL greats? Hell, they come from all over the place. Let's take a look at some of the greatest quarterbacks of all time (off the top of my head, so forgive me if I omit some guys).

Peyton Manning (Tennessee)

Tom Brady (Michigan)

Drew Brees (Purdue)

Dan Marino (Pitt)

Joe Montana (Notre Dame)

John Elway (Stanford)

Jim Kelly (Miami)

Ben Roethlisberger (Miami-OH)

Terry Bradshaw (Louisiana Tech)

Dan Fouts (Oregon)

Steve Young (BYU)

Fran Tarkenton (Georgia)

Do you see a pattern here? I sure as hell don't.

The point is that college coaches don't have a ton of effect on becoming an all-time NFL great. They can help you achieve fame in college and perhaps a high draft pick, but after that, nobody knows. Pete Carroll had a great run at USC and even cheated to get great prospects, but Matt Leinart, Reggie Bush, Carson Palmer, Mike Williams, Steve Smith, etc. haven't turned into NFL stars to brag about. His good defensive linemen have been mediocre, his good linebackers have been mediocre, his corners haven't done anything special, and the one safety success story (granted, it's a big one) is Troy Polamalu.

Urban Meyer's track record of turning college players into stars and getting them drafted is pretty damn good. After that the players are on their own to find success in the pros.

It obviously can't be proven but I would guess that every team in Div 1 football has or currently does talk bad about other schools. It's an easy way to plant a seed a thought in to a kids head. Hell, when a friend of mine was choosing a college he has Div 3 football coaches talking bad about other Div 3 programs. It happen almost everywhere if not everywhere.

My new favorite sport to watch is MGoBoard. You never let me down.

On this topic, I'm with the people who say worry about taking care of our own business. These comments won't be the reason recruits decide to go there or not.

Also, even if they don't say it, this will turn some people off. For me, it is a consider the source situation.

Finally, this is actually good and free publicity to have him talk about Michigan. It keeps us in mind with the recruits we actually have a real chance with.

StraightDave

June 2nd, 2014 at 10:12 AM ^

Is he supposed to tell the recruits that UM is a better program and they should go to Michigan?   I would have a problem with "negative" recruiting if UM was winning and he said this but when you barely beat UCONN and Indiana, well, I just can't get mad over his comments.

RationalBuckeye

June 2nd, 2014 at 10:12 AM ^

So if Hoke tells a kid that OSU isn't a a good fit for him for whatever reason compared to UM (which happens), people would be disappointed?

He's not exactly spreading rumors, just pointing to the numbers. One program is winning, the other isn't. If you think that's unethical to point out then you're entitled to hold that opinion, but honestly, the numbers say enough for themselves.

RationalBuckeye

Whether I agree with that notwithstanding, would that approach really work? You don't think there are coaches out there calling urban a scumbag? Or Saban, I guarantee there are coaches that warn recruits about oversigning at Bama, yet he still gets who he wants. I think it stands to reason that pointing at facts and using facts to imply other things about a school make a lot more of an impact that ad homs.
