Penn State lands Sterling Jenkins & Brandon WImbush

Submitted by Wee-Bey Brice on

This solidifies my theory that people love weird. I don't know what it is but people really like weird. James Franklin is weird. People like James Franklin. People like weird.

Both prospects were UM targets:

Nice little Tuesday for James Franklin, two top-150 prospects commit, probably get some ice cream after dinner, who knows.

ESPN 300 OL Sterling Jenkins has committed to Penn State. First time PSU has landed No. 1 Pa. prospect since at least 2006.

Meh prospects always get excited about new, energetic coaches.  Let's see if it lasts.

Enough with the correcting of everyone else's grammar. You are not their teacher or anything to them. As one guy stated, "This is a blog". Did I do that right? Bet you're licking your chops over that one because we don't care and it doesn't make you look less intelligent in some people's eyes because the ones writing this stuff probably couldn't change their own tire!

'Sometimes it is best to keep your mouth closed rather than opening it and proving what a fool you are...'

Someone said that one day and it became a quote you might want to think about... cause I only the unenlightened ignorant types complain about grammar nazis by saying 'this is a blog';  this is a lanuage, English, try to speak it.

love,

I think the phrase is "better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt." That's how I remember it anyway.

Also, in your next paragraph you write "cause I only the enlightened..." which I believe is simply a typo rather than a grammar mistake, but it's still pretty ironic given your post.

Personally I don't get too upset about the way people type but admit, sometimes it can make it difficult to read. I just look at it as a challenge rather than go all grammar nazi on them.

Oh, and I didn't neg you just so you know.

Unenlightened, ignorant and fool? Wow, you must really feel better about yourself already. I'm glad you got that off your chest and like to call names behind a blog. Would've loved to see that done in person! Wait, you are the type that cant do that. I also know that you are the real fool to sink to that level. Watch how far you get in life with that crap. I hope you don't educate your dumbass children to be like that. Jackass. Go play dungeons and dragons or something.

So let me get this straight; You are angry at him because you internalized his comment when really he didn't call you anything. He provided a qoute (which granted, he butchered a bit) and then reference the "guys" you qouted (as saying "this is a blog") as being unenlightened and ignorant. I didn't actually see him call you any names at all.

Then you go on in your post to call his kids dumbasses and him a jackass....

Over the years I have seen many people misuse the term "irony" but your post and the one above provide two very clear examples of it.

Listen, some people (of which I don't consider myself one) on this blog are very concerned with grammar. If you don't fall into that category that's fine, but you can't really fault someone else for following the rules of the language being used. If it doesn't bother you that's great, you're probably a better person for it. But it's silly to get angry at someone for pointing out something that is clearly accurate.

People don't like reading poor grammar, and thus are inclined to correct it.  Otherwise the next thing you know this blog will be full of "Ur rite lol, I think ur definAtely 733t" and not many of us want that.

Yes it's an unsolicited correction but appreciate that someone out there is trying to help educate you to not sound like an illiterate monkey.  No matter how brilliant your mind is, if you don't have the proper tools to express what's in it (i.e., grammar/vocabulary/etc) everyone loses - you most of all.

Also, it's peoples' not people's in your run-on sentence.

That aside, any recruit that doesn't end up in Columbus or East Lansing right now is a good thing. Until such time as Franklin starts winning multiple BIGs I'll take a strong PSU at Ohio's expense any day.

Writing with decent English make it easier to understand what people are saying. English has rules. Many. If you use them, you appear less stoopid.

Okay, so we really should pick it up with the whole "recruiting" thing.  But I guess to expect that we have to start picking up with the whole "winning" thing.  A good season will quickly stop the bleeding for recruiting.   A bad one on the, well...

Actually think James Franklin is a good coach. He is a slimy individual but I do think he is a good coach. Maybe not Urban or Dantonio good but good none the less.

This is good for the B1G. We need to simply beat them on the field. I think Cole, Harris and KLS are really big recruits for us. We need 10 wins this season and at least 2 rivalry victories.

He's a young, energetic coach who is selling a promise (of revival).  That's a draw.  Another draw is playing time.  They have program tradition (if you're COMPLETELEY IGNORE that thing that happened).

Sparty slappies pointed to these reasons as explanations for our last few recruiting classes.  They're plausable explanations.  He has a lot to sell right now.  These recruits won't see much of the bowl ban, but they are looking at a thin depth chart for a "hot" coach at a football crazy school.  There's no reason why WE should panic, but congrats to PSU for capitalizing on it.  Only time will tell whether it'll materialize.

There are no limitations below 25 in future signing periods (we were limited to 20 this past February).

We are still limited to only 80 total scholarship athletes for the 2015-16 season.  That number returns to the standard 85 for the 2016-17 season.

Given the current roster structure, we could not sign the full 25 while remaining under 80.  There would need to be a little (couple players) attrition.  (which often occurs organically anyway).

PAproudtoGoBlue

May 7th, 2014 at 7:19 AM ^

Penn State can sign 25. That only leaves them in the position where they have to get rid of 9 kids currently on scholarship because they only have 16 scholarship spots available. Let the SEC recruiting tactics begin. I guess he learned his lesson running a hostess program now he'll try his hand at Saban-style over recruiting.

I agree but...you have to remember these kids they think will leave are the same kids that signed on to play at PSU when there was no chance of bowl games or post seasons. They want to be there. I live in the heart of NittanyNation and the shtuff their fans, including my entire family, are saying is football first as usual. They say crap like 'well the scholarships are only 1 year scholarships so if the staff thinks the kid isn't going to play they can w/drawl his scholarship.'  THEY ARE CRAZY. By crazy I mean nothing but nothing matters like PSU football to them. From child rape to cutting inner-city kids just to get new kids w/ more stars the only thing that matters is the program. Paterno did nothing wrong, the NCAA had no right to discipline and I'm jealous because PSU is actually recruiting well are all things I hear DAILY. I love Michigan but I wouldn't trade my standards to see them win one game.

incredibly they slightly eased santions and psu will be back to full roster within several seasons...they shouldve gotten death penalty time punishment with that decade-plus felony spree up there.  its completely ridiculous theyll be competitive again this generation - but money talks.  and its good for big ten i guess, still just feels dirtier than any other previous bs ever

I guess it depends on how Penn State does, and I hate to be that guy, but if we don't look very good this year I don't see how Hoke gets another year. Urbs is doing his thing, so is Franklin, and MSU is starting to get interest from very highly rated guys. I really don't think we can afford another meh season.

Rather be on BA

May 7th, 2014 at 8:20 AM ^

Last time I checked Franklin hasn't coached a game at Penn State.  He is recruiting well, so did Hoke, whether that translates to the field is yet to be seen.  I wouldn't put Franklins success on the level or Urban or MSU yet.

I agree that Hoke needs a solid year this year though, if not to keep his job this year, then to avoid truly being on the hot seat the following year.

PSU is landing  a lot of talent and in  a few years will be a tough team to beat. Hoke better start winning. I fear that if we have another 4 or 5 loss season then everyone and their Mother will be saying Hoke will not make it past 2015. No matter that the team is a bit young, Hoke needs to win 9 or 10 wins or recruiting going to turn into a real mess. All our competing coaches will just say that Hoke will be gone shortly. Kids don't want to go to a program where a coaching change may occur. This is why I'm quite concerned over the 2014 season.

Penn State will be competitive with Rutgers.  they are about to go through what we are going through now.  The effect of bad recruiting lags a few years.  If they implode this year ( a very real possibility), their class might fall apart.  They should lose to UM, Ohio, MSU.  They could easily lose to UCF and Rutgers.  I see them somewhere between 5-7and 8-4 this year.  Next year, they will be a tire fire and be lucky to hit .500.

An excerpt from his Vanderbilt bio (LINK):

"In 2010, he helped the Terrapins to an impressive 9-4 turnaround. That season, Franklin's explosive offense averaged 32.2 points and topped 50 points in three games. Maryland redshirt freshman quarterback Danny O'Brien finished the 2010 season as one of the nation's most efficient signal callers, throwing for 2,438 yards, 22 touchdowns, and only eight interceptions while earning ACC Rookie of the Year honors. First team All-ACC receiver Torrey Smith, an eventual second round NFL pick, flourished under Franklin's system, finishing 2010 with 67 receptions, 1,055 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns."

That doesn't sound like a "tire fire" of an offense.

I grew up a Maryland, my brother and sister are both huge football fans who went to maryland.  Going 9-4 in the ACC is like going 9-4 in the MAC, especially in 2010 when fsu and miami were both still completely terrible.  That year their wins were navy, morgan state, florida international, duke (who wasn't decent at the time), boston college, wake forest, virginia, nc state, and east carolina.  They beat one team that finished above .500 in the acc and that was 5-3 nc state. The offense that year was throw it up to torrey smith and let him be really fast, sort of like what ksu did to us with lockett just to a bunch of bad teams.  The guy had a head coach in waiting contract with a million dollar buy out and the fanbase and school were so unhappy with his coaching that despite being in  a hole financially they bought him out. Sure its nice that they put up 62 points on morgan state at home but that doesn't make him a good offensive coordinator, they also put up 7 points on a clemson team that finished 6-7, bios aren't always your friend.

I'm not saying that he can't be a good head coach but he never beat any of the actual good teams in the SEC and was considered a poor game day coach while at maryland despite one stastically good offense that had a wr that is a good nfl player and a weak schedule.

We can dismiss it if we want, but PSU is going to be good...and quickly. As they should be, but we absolutely won't be taking advantage of any sanctions. They're going to be very good.

Now they're going obviously going to have to win in 3-4 years, but the difference is Franklin will have a pass for that long. Being aren't giving the same pass to Hoke even though he had a couple of really solid classes.

Franklin's classes will get a chance to mature...Michigan is restless and we're still a year away.

Regardless of who the coach is for Michigan next year (2015), we better win the B1G and be a playoff contender. The team should be THAT good and unless Rich Rod comes back and everyone transfers away again, we will have plenty of experienced talent all over the field.

This is the year the young guys get the experience. Next offseason and next year is when we should truly see it (plus we have a better schedule).

I don't care if it's Hoke, Harbaugh, the other Harbaugh, Miles, Gruden, Smart, Fitzgerald, Stoops or some FSU assistant. B1G Championship and College Football Playoff appearance. THAT is my bar for next season.

For this year, I want to see improvement. I want to see a team in the OSU game that could ROLL the team in the App State game. One of the most frustrating things about last year is we played so well vs. ND and never got any better, we got worse (do you guys realize that ND had not one, but TWO potential Top 15 NFL draft picks on their DL and our OL held up?). I want to see us get better each and every game. By the time we hit bowl season, we better be licking our chops at whoever we play knowing we get a 15 days of practice to trounce someone. Then we better go out and do it. If we're in one of the Florida bowls (Cap One or Outback), we better destroy that SEC team by 17+. We should leave that game with so much hype it makes everyone across the nation sick.

So for this year. 8-4, 9-3, I don't really care as long as we're significantly better by year's end and the inexperience has become experienced and the improvement has been Beilein-esqe.

Next year. B1G Champs. CFB Playoff Apperance or bust.

If this happens, I really couldn't give a shit who goes to PSU. It'll just be another good game for us because I'll know we're officially, BACK.

2015 is set up perfectly for whomever the coach is.  At this point you more or less have to give it to Hoke if for nothing else you don't want to bring in new offensive and defensive systems for a team that brings back 10 of 11 offensive starters (all but Gardner) from 2014, and while losing JMFR (damn), Clark, Beyer, and Taylor replace them with Gedeon, Charlton, Poggi, and Peppers.  Depth everywhere on defense with upperclassmen everywhere. And everyone else on the roster is a year older.

MSU and OSU at home.  No one scary on non conf.  No Wisconsin. The "awesome 2012 OL" class will have a few 2/3 year starters in 2015, and a bunch of experience - simply zero excuses in 2015.  Hoke has to win the division that year or else you are looking around and saying "Welp 2016 we are back to OSU and MSU on the road, you add Wisconsin and Iowa as opponents.  And welp wah wah wah."  If you cannot win it in 2015 you are back to the perpetual 3-4 loss cycle we started this whole mess at with 1 great year every 7 blah blah.  Opposing coaches with Rose Bowls, BCS bowls, start pointing at you and saying - even with 5 years they don't win conf championships.

Speaking of @PSU that will be the main tough game on the road in 2015, outside of @Utah and @Minnesota.  If you cannot win at Michigan in your 5th year at these venues (Carr DOMINATED JoePA) you don't belong here.
