SB redeems themselves vs Illinois; 8-2

Submitted by MGoSoftball on

The SB Team came on strong today at Illiniois.  This comes on a very disturbing loss lasts night against the last place Illini.  We had a 6 -run 4th inning so down the Illini 8-2.

Megan proved that she is a bonafide #1 Top-tiered pitcher today as she gave up 2 runs (both ER) off 4 hits.  She had 3 BB and 3 Ks.  She had 1 HBP and gave up 1 HR.

The offense combined for 12 hits led by Lyndsay who went 3 for 4 with 1 RBI and 2 runs scored.  Romo went 2 for 4 with a run scored.  Taylor went deep and long in the 4th inning and finished 1 for 4 with 3 RBIs and and 2 runs scored.

We play a double today so hopefully we can come back to town not too badly wounded.  Yesterday's loss is still sticking in my craw.

Second-place Nebraska beat Sparty twice today so we are still one game ahead of them for the Big Ten Lead.

Great job by Megan this afternoon.  Lets keep the offense going for the second game.

I always thought Wagner's ceiling was high, and Betsa seems like that elite level pitcher you need to compete at the top.

I think Sara is a great athlete, but I've always thought she's too hittable to rely on against the elite teams.

This is all based on extremely limited observation, though.

What are your thoughts about our pitching?

Our pitching is the best. Anyone remember Wagner her freshman year? She was way under the radar due to the fact that Sara was a local pitcher with great talent.  But look what happened? Wagner was the pitcher that year and she was awesome.  She came out strong for the team, breaking records.  She is not under the radar any more.  Wagner is a phenomenal pitcher, after last year, she came on very strong this year.  So what, a couple of bad games??  Thye are human, it is going to happen.  You have to remember, they had finals this past week, had to travel to Purdue mid week and then turn right back around and go to Illinos.   The whole team looked aweful this weekend. 4 errors in one game.  All the pitchers were not on their game this weekend, can't have that many BB's, HBP, errors in the outfield.   And when you don't hit a last place team, how do you expect to win? Any team is a threat, even a last place team. Our girls swung at some terrible pitches this weekend to make it so easy on the Illinois pitchers.  Taking 2 out of 3 was good for the team, and being at home next weekend will be good for them.  I do believe that they will sweep at home next weekend and things  will be right back on track for the rest of the season.

Haylie has had some fantastic shut out wins of top ranked teams,  especially in CA when they were out here. She is back to her form from freshman year.   She went 19-3 last year, but only due to the early and late injury.  This year she 20-2, but not getting as many games since we now have 3 pitchers.  Remember she was 19-0 to start.  And was able to help herself with batting also.   She was the go to pitcher early in the season, and now that Sara is back on her game, they now have two seasoned pitchers and with the addition of Betsa, 3 fantastic pitchers.  I think all will be good, everyone back on their game, pitching, hitting and defense.

Looks like they needed Sara's veteran poise to get out of there with the win (followed on gametracker).

Bases loaded against them two outs in the 6th, tying run on 2nd with no outs in the 7th, dicey.

I hope they can shake out of whatever funk they appear to be in.

They basically went life and death with a cellar dweller to escape with a 2-1 series win.

...completes today's doubleheader sweep!

Let's see if they can get settled and back on track, this team is undoubtably talented enough to go a long way in the NCAA Tourney.  But let's first win the B1G!

Thank God that's over.

Back at Alumni Field. Just take care of wisconsin in a 1-2-3 sweep. And all bad of the week is erased.

Obviously not for the chance to host a regional, but it can make the players stop reading their headlines. I am in no way saying Coach Hutch would let her team rest on laurels but every team hits a rut, hopefully that one game was the extent of UM's rut. Go Blue!!
