Reporter: Glenn Robinson To Enter Draft Comment Count

Brian

This is the report the reporter is reporting:

If you're wondering why this guy would get it first, the signed with an agent bit is the gateway there. Fischer writes for SLAM and the Boston Globe, FWIW.

While I think GRIII would benefit from another year in college, I'm not sure that's the case.  This year didn't help his draft status, and if he's ready to go, wants to go, and it's the best thing for him and his family, he should go.

I wish him the best, and, even if you agree with me that another year at U-M might benefit him, I'd feel a whole lot better if you'd admit you don't know all the circumstances and that you wish him the best, too.

I can understand it, even if it's disappointing. He still has "athletic potential" right now. Another year of basically the same performance (and playing the 4, which he is known not to like but is the logical place to put him on a team with a shortage of bigs and a lot of wings) and he's not draftable at all.

I'm legitimately worried that we'll lose all three.

and GRIII leaving makes me want to jump to conclusions and say McGary may be out as well as another year at the 4 may have been what helped GRIII go. Rampant speculation as he may have planned to go either way (and his exit isn't even officially official yet) but certainly another year at the 4 is probably something Glenn would rather not do

First off, agree with you on the officialness.  Talking about this because of one reporter's tweet citing "sources" still feels dumb.

That being said, GRIII could also find himself getting pushed for minutes, especially if he doesn't want to play the 4.  Walton is probably going to see more of the offense go through him next year.  LeVert has the 2 locked down (assuming Nik leaves, which isn't certain yet and would create even more of a logjam) and I don't see Robinson playing that spot effectively.  Irvin and Donnal are both guys pushing for increased minutes.  And then you throw in any freshmen/newcomers into that mix as well.

If Nik comes back, GRIII is looking at playing the 4 or coming off the bench.  If Nik doesn't, he's still getting pushed by Irvin and would probably be at best the #2 option at the 4 (or you have Irvin playing those minutes at the 4, which makes for another potentially unhappy camper).

People saying he should come back are assuming he will be featured more prominently in the offense and won't have to play the 4 defensively.  Just pointing out that both of those assumptions could easily be false, and that is before you account for risk of injury, etc.

If Nik comes back, GRIII is playing the 4.  Or he's coming off the bench at the 3 after Nik/Caris.  And 6th men in college are rarely lottery picks.

If Irvin improves his overall game this summer and is still 10% points better from behind the line, GRIII isn't going to see his draft stock rise higher than it is now and will be forced to either play the 4 or play fewer minutes.

If Walton becomes Trey Burke 2.0, GRIII may not have the kind of opportunities in the offense he wants/needs to improve his draft stock.

Those are all things to consider when making this kind of decision.

So the point is he could earn a higher spot in the draft, and more guaranteed signing money, potentially, if he were to wait a year and develop his trade.  Right now he's projected in the 2nd round which, if I'm not mistaken, offers no guaranteed money.

As the OP said, his family has money so it's not like his needs aren't being provided.  He's not having to sell Doritios at Hash Bash in order to make enough money to go fly home to visit his family.

However, with a quick glance I haven't found one yet that has projectd him in the 1st.

Personally, I think it's a little too late to come out now.  He's done the damage now he needs to work himself back in the 1st round.  However, if he's been told he'll have to play out of his  natural position again, then by all means, he should go.  I'm only saying that based on the money aspect, it would be smarter to stay (in my opinion).   Obviously you have yours.  And Robinson his.

from a sports reporter of NBA scout mentioning that GRIII is under the radar and thought that he is a late 1st rounder.

I can't find it anywhere but as of now, he may have gotten words from NBA draft committee that he got a late 1st round grade from them. That's good enough reason to bolt for the NBA.

Im not sure if that is the best choice for him as far as where he will get drafted. With that said, if this is true then I wish him the best of luck! He was a great player for our team who I am happy to call a wolverine.

Wishing Glenn all the best! It's been a thrilling two years, due in large part to his unpredictable highflying slams. Under appreciated by Michigan fans in my opinion. What he did every night was not easy.

On another note, wow we really need Mitch...

Would be great if Mitch came back, but JB should have proven by now that he doesn't "need" any one player to return to make his teams successful.  The roster is full of guys that will be next year's breakout player, my expectations will remain high even if the triumverate of Stauskas, GRIII, and Mitch all declare.

Yours is a perfectly reasonable thought, but I'm not sure that he does need that center.  He has had effective teams without that 5 while at WVU (when the Big East was every bit as tough as the B1G) and even at Michigan during the early years (Novak playing 4/5).  I almost sense JB grinning and getting excited about scheming with an unusual roster next season.

Novak never ever played the 5. But yeah you're right, he had effective teams that were pretty good, much the same as we would be next year without Mitch. We'd still be pretty good. But if we wanted to be REALLY good (the standard we've built the last two years and want to keep going), you need to have that center. You can't beat the best teams without one.

He can run an offense without a center. To the extent that there's anything you could label a "5" in his sets, it's a high post role that could be filled as well or better by a smaller player.

The problem's at the other end--you have to have someone that can defend the other team's 5.

I would like to see these guys stay at least three years.  I don't think we have the depth established yet to sustain multiple early entrants.  If we could have kept two of the three, we greatly increase our chances of getting past Sparty and putting some distance between us.  With the way things look, we could be a Levert injury away from struggling to make the tournament next year.

April 14th, 2014 at 3:05 PM ^

Most teams are vulnerable when their best player gets injured (which LeVert would be next year in the case of all three guys bolting), so I'm not sure that should be factored into the analysis.

If the same things happen this offseason that have happened in the preceding few years - sophomores mature and become draftable stars, freshman estabish themselves immediately in important but limited roles), I don't think we'll have a depth issue.

would have been my suggestion, but he didn't ask.  In the NBA, he needs to be more consistent.  He can't disappear like he does now for stretches at a time.  He will need to work on his D...mainly his effort on D, and develop a more consistent outside shot.

Wish him the best, but would love to have seen another year to polish his game.

He can refine his game a lot more playing basketball as a career than he could playing basketball as part of a student athlete system that mandates class time and practice limits, not to mention the fact that the practice competition in the NBA far surpasses NCAA D1.

If his body can handle it (likely) and the main knock on him is consistency (not a talent deficiency), then go out, impress at the workouts, get drafted, and then he can really refine his game.
