... Not sure if serious...

He didn't actually ask him if he could wear it and get approval, at least not in a meaningful way that actually gets him the number.  Hoke gives out the numbers.

Hoke had previously said that when Vincent Smith graduated, they were going to give the #2 jersey the same status as the #1, but for DBs.  I have to imagine #2 will carry a ledgends patch in the not to distant future either.  That said, I was under the impression Peppers wanted to keep #5 for himself, and make it his own.

I seem to recall that Peppers said in an interview a few months ago that he wouldn't necessarily turn down the #2 jersey if offered, but I've also heard what you mentioned - that he wanted to keep #5 and make that his own number.

I will say, however, that I definitely would not mind another #2 All-American (we've had two - Woodson was one, of course), but we've never had one that wore #5, I think - he really could make a legacy by being the first. Either way, glad to have him coming to Ann Arbor.

How tall is Peppers?  That picture makes him look like he's more along the lines of 5-10' or 5'11" rather than the 6'+ I was under the impression he was.  Woodson is listed at 6'1", correct?

Singling out a player by giving him a legendary numer.  It is a distractions for kids and not entirely consistent with Bo's "the Team" mantra.  I would rather give kids the helmet decals we used to give for making plays on the field.

having ceremonies honoring them.  I am not in favor of singling out a player by giving him a special number.

Only one DB can have #2.  What does Blake think about it? Or Lewis?  No matter how well they play, they will never wear #2.  I think it affects team unity.

Give him #2 right off the bat.

The whole "you have to earn it" junk started with Lloyd and Braylon. Prior to that, they just gave out the #1 jersey. The play of guys like Carter, McMurtry, Alexander and Terrell just happened to make the number a big deal.

Now it's pretty safe to say we won't see #1 for a long time. #21 is the receivers legends number. #1 has been pretty much retired by Braylon.

I'd rather somebody where the number than not and especially somebody with his talent. Now I just wish somebody would wear the number 1 jersey. It seems like a lifetime since that's happened.

Let's just let this kid get on campus and have a chance to play football before everyone says how great he will be and if he deserves the #2. Kids still in high school..
