2013-14 Offense - Best in KenPom History

Submitted by David F on

After scoring 1.26 points-per-possession against an above-average Kentucky defense, Michigan vaulted into the top spot in this year's KenPom adjusted offensive efficiency.

In addition, at 124.1 OEff this season, this year's Michigan offense is the top ranked offensive unit in the 12-year history of KenPom.

It was a tough loss last night, but we can still celebrate this team's remarkable accomplishments.

Where was the defense ranked? I feel just having a top 100 defense would've put us at the odds on favorite to win the tournament. Obviously thats easy to say, but just imagine the points we would get with a better defense and the transition points...

Regardless, it was truly amazing to see this team shoot the ball so well. Usually they say you live and die by the three, but Michigan rarely ever was having an off night shooting the three.

The unadjusted number that I have for the season on my spreadsheet for defensive efficiency is 1.05 points per possession, which would probably be a middle-of-the-road perfromance when compared to the whole of Division I. At last report on TeamRankings, we're 157th on this metric.

Also on the season, our average opponent effective field goal percentage was 49.54%, which as you would expect is pretty close in ranking terms to defensive efficiency - midrange in comparison to the whole of Division I.

Nope, some people are just not ready to let go of this season yet and are trying to find more reasons to celebrate what this team did this year.  If you're ready to move on from this season, then move on already rather than trolling others.

Great two year run. These teams were great to watch, and very likable kids. I'm very nervous what the loss of Stauskas will do to this team next year, but I feel we will always have a fighters punch with Beilein.

would have loved to see how the Loyola Marymount team from 1990 graded out.  Man, that game when they put up 149 on UofM in the NCAA tourny, was still the most unbelievable output I have ever seen in a Div 1 BB game....They pressed the whole game and couldn't miss.  That teams philosophy was they wanted to take a shot in 10 secords or less, every time down the court....Run and Gun!!!

I'd like to see that too -- they were a great offensive team -- but obviously a lot of their scoring came from their pace.  I'm not saying that they wouldn't have surprassed 1.24 adjusted points per possession, but I'm not sure it would be a slam dunk either way.

I took a quick look at a box score from the 1990 game.  It doesn't list turnovers -- there must have been plenty, both ways -- but it looks like there must have been at least 90-100 possessions in that game.  And the 149 was an outlier, even for them (at least against major competition).

Basketball only fans will want to hang a banner. Great team we had, and 5th to 8th place out of so many teams isn't bad. Next year we will win it all.

...if we had blocked out successfully on just 3 or 4 possessions, we would have likely won that game. The lack of blocking out was painful to watch.

We played man most of the game, and they're flying in there uncontested.  The problem is when the guy on ball gets blown-by, the help defense has to rotate, and is often doing so as the shot is going up.  In that situation it's really hard to find someone to put a body on b/c you've left your man and are trying to find another one.  At that point you're likely out of position to box someone out.

Given that and the fact that UK was TO prone, I thought we should've played a lot of 1-3-1.  Boxing out is an issue in zone, but, as I said above, so it was in man.
