Cheer to replace "You Suck"

Submitted by michigandadof4 on

Like many, I am a little sick of the "you suck" cheer. Taking a page from Brian's game previews, instead of "you suck" I have been chanting "Hold On .. . " "To the Ball . . ." and then at the end yelling "PLEASE" when the students are yelling "YOU SUCK."

So far it has been working. Briefly lost focuse during Saturday's game and we put the ball on the turf, but recovered. Going forward I won't forget and may even start using it when watching away games.

Wasn't part it back in the day. I'm not a fan.

Rather it be something like...Our Ball! Punt It!

Something a little more old school and less detrimental to the other side.

Yeah, it really is comical to see that cheer on a FG attempt, especially when that FG puts the other team ahead. Maybe wait till after the kick in those instances?

How about GO BLUE. I feel like it started some time while I was there. Maybe it was before but I only remember it coming around in 03 or 04. Thats about the time there was the push to go with the "claw" instead of the "chop". The "you suck" is so lame and needs to go. Suck is sooooooo 90's.

Oh yeah, IT is also really stupid when we get a stop on 3rd and its obvious the other team is going for it on 4th. Screaming you suck while the team is Lining up a QB sneak for a 1st down, and eventually a TD.

My senior year was 2002-03 and I don't remember anyone saying it then. Since 2005 I've had season tickets in a section opposite the students, so I can hear their chants if the whole section is behind one. The first time I can remember the whole student section saying it was App State.

...around the same time as "the claw". Both have absolutely butchered what used to be a pretty cool cheer. Nothing like yelling "YOU SUCK!" at Indiana or Appy St while they are beating us. But i guess to understand the stupidity of it the students would actually have to watch the game and know something about football. Or just have common sense.

Gotta love generalizations. I could also be an ass and assume you're an alum who yells down in front all game, but that would just be me saying that all alumni suck, when in fact its mostly just section 24.

The fundamental problem with "You suck," besides its tackiness, is that the alumni are never going to want to say it. The chant should be something everyone in the stadium wants to say, for the maximum effect. Even if it's just "Let's Go Blue!," having 100,000 say it is more intimidating that having 20,000 students in one end of the stadium say "You suck!"

While I agree that doing this when they are going for a fg or going for it on 4th is stupid, telling the students not to do this after a stop when the team is losing is ridiculous. It's a taunt and a hell of a lot more noticeable than anything the rest of the stadium is doing and especially better than that terrible pre-3rd down taunt thing started by the band two years ago.

The cheer would be more noticeable if the entire stadium took part, instead of just the students. But that will never happen if it stays as "You suck." You're never going to see the alumni participate.

And really, "you suck" is about as brainless as it gets. This is the best chant we can think of?

Isn't it obvious?

The cheer is a salute to the defense for stopping the opponent. Up in the rafters of Sec. 37, this is how my wife and I choose to end the cheer -- principally because we have our two sons (ages 6 and 8) with us for every game.

If not, what's wrong with just "Go Blue"?

(Yeah, I know ... get off my lawn...)

that the Columbus Crew and other soccer teams use when a goal kick is made. In Columbus (I live there, sorry to say), they shout "You suck, asshole!" as the opposing goalie boots it.

While it's quite comical to hear a couple thousand people shouting it, I always prefer more "sportsmanlike" chants.

It is funny, though.

With apologies to Perry Como

You came, I was alone I should have known,
You were temptation

You smiled, luring me on, my heart was gone,
And you were temptation
It would be thrilling, if you were willing
And it can never be, pity me

For you were born to be kissed, I can't resist
You are temptation and I am yours

Here is my heart, take it and say that we'll never part
I'm just a slave, only a slave to you
Temptation, I'm your slave

The emphasized portions are the parts I believe the cuts of the music are designed to emulate, but see if you can decipher it for yourself:

I can't wait for the "You Suck" cheer this weekend. It was extraordinarily loud during the Notre Dame game, and I expect the same thing this weekend. I think the crowd understands from the ND game how loud it can be with the new structures. I have tremendous expectations for volume this Saturday.

Right on brother. It will be so loud we're gonna make the glass shake. And wholly crap won't it be fun doing the "You Suck" cheer while JoePa is bitching about some call?

I will say that at the end of the Toledo game last year, I found myself yelling "WE SUCK!"

Blasphemy, I know. Yeah...

We should find some movie that features wolverines in it and play scenes from it, every time we stop someone on 3rd down. That would be awesome, Brah!!
