"sucks"

Submitted by the_big_house 500th on
After the huge upset of Purdue over Ohio State yesterday I decided to pop down on campus to see a good friend of mine who lives down on Ohio State. Now needless to say I was wearing my maize and blue and for the first time nobody said a word. The depression was so great and massive that they barely gave my Michigan gear a second thought or glare. I walked up to my friend Haris's apartment door to see the lights were dim and the sound of ESPN Sportcentre could be heard. He answered and I walked inside with his friend's on the couch demoralized some even had watery eyes as their face's kept focus on the screen. He offered me a beer as I could see that most of them in the fridge were on the table with his buds so I declined and we both sat down. He sighed for a moment then gave a faint smile and said "Alton, for the first time since I can remember I'm depressed. I mean really depressed." I gave a friendly pat on the shoulder and said "now you know how I felt that day back in 2007 on our first game of the season." He nodded and simply summed up yesterday's loss in one word. "Sucks." I nodded back and for that moment flashbacks of my reaction of the App St. game came rushing into my mind. I never had felt so depressed that day and that week. For us Michigan fans it was a moment of "I know exactly how they feel." Because we have been down this road many times. It was not until he said "sucks" that I realized how demoralizing this loss really was. I being a Michigan fan and knowing my team won almost forgot about the past seasons. But to this day games like App St. Oregon, Toledo and USC still linger in my mind and of course the consecutive OSU losses. Point is it does suck to lose and upset losses hurt even worse. Were Michigan fans and we love it when OSU loses but we must also remember our place in infamy. We have lost more bigger games and upsets than OSU has of late so we must also keep our respect and past experiences into consideration. For Wings fans like me the pain of the 2009 Stanley Cup Finals still stings. Seeing the cup that has 11 of our championships on it raised on our home ice by the opposition? I never felt so depressed after that week. I guess the point is that we all feel the agony of defeat when it comes down our road and we all are hurt by it after it's damage has been done. For OSU fans this was their biggest upset loss in a long time so we can imagine what is going through their minds right now. I guess what I'm trying to say is no matter who it happens to or what team it happens to losing always never feels good.

WTL - This is about the maximum length your post needed to be: "It does suck to lose and upset losses hurt even worse. You seem to like starting new posts daily in which you theorize about your personal experiences for the rest of us - perhaps you need your own blog?

Huh? You sure you didn't drink a whole case before typing this? I would think the royal beat downs they took in the NC games were worse and at least one of those were an upset. I get your point that losing to a team that has lost five straight is unexpected, but maybe the Carrification (play not to lose) of OSU has begun. Quite frankly, I don't care if Suckeye fans are hurt by the loss. Do you think they felt sorry for us after the App State debacle- Hell no.

I think it is more of just than upset loss for them, but a reckoning moment that their vaunted QB (one that we all wanted at the time-myself included) is not what he was expected to become. Reading through some of the OSU threads today shows that the fan base, at least the ones who know how to work the computer, are fed up with what the program has turned into in the past few seasons under Tressel. Nonetheless, I am loving every minute of their pain.

Fuck them. They haven't exactly been sympathetic towards us. "Some even had watery eyes". Because their team lost a football game, not to a bitter rival, not with the MNC on the line, etc.? Maybe they should try to elevate their emotional control beyond that of a 12 year old. OTOH, maybe your are joking and I'm not getting it...

If the most depressing weeks of your life were when we lost to Appy State and when the Wings lost the Cup on our home ice, you need some perspective on things. I've watched people die feet from me, and been unable to do anything about it. I've watched the birth of my children. I live and die by UM football, and always have, but I no longer get too high after a big win, nor too low after a big loss. What has always bewildered me in light of all that, and understanding they are common events in all human lives, is how MSU and OSU fans can invest so much energy in their hatred of UM. Life is just too damn short, and it can be over in a blink.

That's what I meant, considering the reaction I observed in some buckeye boards. I happen to share your priorities in life, but maybe I was guilty of responding with a joke to your thoughtful post.

Hell you should have yelled, "Boiler Up, TOOT! TOOT!" at the door and then once inside made them a complimentary Boilermaker to rub it in some more. They are all relentless pricks and i have zero pity for them.

No Michigan fan should ever, ever feel any sympathy for sucknut fans. On that fateful day in 2007, I recall one of my neighbors hanging a huge ass banner: HONK IF YOU LOVE APPALACHIAN STATE! And of course I had to hear honking cars well into the night. That pretty much epitomizes the entirety of that obnoxious fanbase. They care more about M losing than their team winning. It totally makes my weekend when my Facebook newsfeed is filled with stuff like this, "In hind sight, all us Buckeye fans praying for Terelle Pryor to be a Buckeye is quite funny...kinda like praying for disease to ravage your once healthy body"

my general rule is to give back what I get. Any OSU fan that was in my face last year is going to get it right back....only I will likely wait until we beat them, shaping up to be a pretty interesting game this year. Those OSU fans that were decent to me during our recent woes will get the same in return. I might say 'tough loss' or reference it in some manner, but I won't explicitly rub it in as I don't really think we have earned any right to be smug as of yet. Secretly I want them to win every game and lose one, to M, b/c that is what will tweak them the most. Once we start get the better of them on a regular basis again, I will treat them to whatever amount of smugness I think they warrant.

You're offering a lecture to a message board regarding sportsmanship? After you wore your Michigan stuff to your friend's house, presumably to gloat about the win over Delaware State yesterday? And, as part of the lecture, you're reminding the message board that we had crushing losses in the past that we shouldn't forget? Huh? I'm not a "gloater" anyway, but thanks. This is one of the strangest things I've ever read here.

I believe when he said "sucks", that was your cue to rip off your tear-aways, unveiling your Purdue banana hammock, then give a WWF style "suck it" gesture. Seriously dude, it's Ohio State.

I was at the game yesterday and I could'nt figure out what everyone was cheering about, as I was looking down at the field during a commercial break. I finally caught the scoreboard, it was a beautiful thing. "Losing always never feels good". I agree, but I aren't be the type that don't have no sympathy for no Effing A$$holes like OSU fans. Instead of beer, they were popping Champagne bottles when we lost to App. St.
