Michigan Hockey NCAA Tournament Hopes..

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Michigan is not dead yet.

They could find their way into the tournament, after all.

Union just plowed Cornell who is now out of it, bumping Michigan back IN at No. 15 overall.

If multiple things happen here, Michigan could get in and could get in higher than the 15-

  • (7) Quinnipiac needs to beat (14) colgate in the ECAC Tournament Semifinals
  • (9) Providence needs to beat (18) new hampshire in the Hockey East Tournament Semifinals
  • (4) Ferris State winning tonight against (24) alaska-anchorage would boost Michigan's SOS.

Quinnipiac is not televised, Providence is at 8 on NBC Sports and Ferris is on at 7 on FS Detroit Plus.

of Michigan getting a spot in the NCAA Hockey Tournament, I'm not so sure I'd have any hope of them making any kind of a run.

I suppose the experience of being in the tournament would be a plus, though, if they could advance at least past teh opening round.

Still cant put my head around the fact that they lost to PSU 3 TIMES this season.  How many wins does Penn State have this year, 4 or 5 and Michigan is 3 of those.  Just nonsense right there!   EDIT:  Just looked it up, they have 8 wins on the season.

Michigan is only a few percentage points above Northeastern and the NCHC games are still going on.

I'm willing to bet if Western Michigan loses to Denver, we will go back to 16th. North Dakota still has to win tonight and in the NCHC championship game.

Edit: WMU lost, but 15th holds. Still need Miami to lose.

We probably benefit if New Hampshire beats Providence as long as they lose to UMass Lowell because it helps our SOS.

We need North Dakota to win the NCHC because they are the only NCHC team in the top 16.

At best we need a top 15 finish because Atlantic Hockey has no one in the top 16.

Upsets in the tournaments could keep us out because they create more automatic qualifiers who would not otherwise get at large bids.  We are definitely better off if Ohio loses.

A loss by Colgate will help.  The Minnesota State win this afternoon hurt us.

STAEE is done for the year!

Yale was the last team in last year and won the national championship. If we had beaten ND in the CCHA Final, last year's champion wouldn't have even meade the tournament.

Losing to PSU definitely makes me not feel good about our chances, but then slamming Minnesota does again. We're wildely inconsistent this year, but the nice thing about the tournament is you don't need to be consistent, you just have to be on the upside at the right time. That's how we managed to win it all in 1996 and 1998 but NOT win in 1997.

but I maintain that it's an abomination that a team that lost 3 of 5 to Penn State could get a shot at a national title. We deserve to watch on the couch. Cool if we sneak in I guess

That OT session was so frustrating because it was confirmation of just how underachieving this team has been. They looked like a damned 1-seed out there for the whole OT. Where has that been the whole year?

I took all the higher seeded teams to win and Michigan was the last team to get in.

So I guess there is still hope.

The picture will be a little more clear later tonight.

Ferris blows a 2-0 lead and is down 3-2 to UAA....

Qunnipiac game is scoreless. That game is on fox college sports if you have the channel.

ohio was leading minnesota but since the B1G Tournament is blocks away from their campus, they awarded minnesota a PP goal. 1-1

miami leads north dakota 1-0

2-1 Quinnipiac late in the 2nd period

Providence-new hampshire scoreless after 1.

FSU and UAA are tied at 4-4 and are in OT.

Quinnipiac up 2-1 with 5 minutes to play in the game.

The dynasty is up 2-0 on the North Dakota fighting no names.  Could be more problems.  Hockey players may have plenty of time to study for finals.

ohio upsets #1 minnesota, will face Wisconsin tomorrow in the B1G Final.

Wisconsin MUST beat ohio. M-U-S-T

If Western beats North Dakota in the consolation game, then North Dakota is out of the tournament and the winner of  Denver and the Dynasty is the sole representative from NCHC.

We need to root for UMass Lowell, Wisky and Western.  If any of those teams lose, we are the first ones out.  I don't think any the outcome of any other game matters.

Quinnipiac blows it. Conference tournament finals for tomorrow.

Union, UMass-Lowell, Wisconsin, Ferris State need to win tomorrow.

Even if Union wins Colgate finishes ahead of same.  Same with Ferris - a Ferris win cannot push Minnesota State below us.

It is not looking good.  Wisky should beat Ohio.  UMass Lowell should beat UNH.  Western will be a long shot.  All three aligning is the billion dollar bracket.

a few ways for Michigan to get in but, goodness, a lot of things have to go right.

Needs:

Western to beat or tie (apparently they can tie in the third place NCHC game) NoDak

UMass-Lowell over UNH

Wisconsin over Ohio State

Those will all get us in as the 14th overall seed and last at-large (I would guess against Ferris State?).  Without all of those three results, I see Michigan as 1st out.

The good news is that those three don't seem particularly unlikely.  The bad news is that UNH and NoDak now pretty much have play in games for the NCAA tournament, so they're likely going to be pretty fired up.  We can only hope that they fire up for virtual NCAA play-in games the same way Michigan does...
