OT: Sammy Watkins wants Lions to draft him
As a follow-up to a previous board topic I posted, where the Lions were considering trading up to get Watkins (as well as Watkins posting pics of Lions paraphenalia on his Tumblr), it seems Sammy is at it again.
Former Clemson wide receiver Sammy Watkins isn’t concerned which team he lands with as long as he’s one of the first players picked in May’s 2014 NFL Draft.
But if the Lions, who were recently reported as having interest in Watkins, were to select him the 20-year-old wide receiver would fit right in.
“I think that would be crazy,” Watkins told FOXSports.com. “You wouldn’t be able to double-guard Megatron. You wouldn’t be able to double-guard me. Basically it would be pick your poison and then you have Golden Tate in the slot. He runs nice routes and is a very physical guy. Then you have Reggie Bush in the backfield. There would be a lot of speed in that offense.
“That’s the type of offense that I want to play in. It’s a very explosive offense. Being with good coaches, an older wide receiver and a quarterback would definitely help me out a lot.”
Coincidentally, I too would like the Lions to draft him. Does that mean we're best friends?
I need the Lions to trade their 2nd rd and get him. To me, he's the most ready in the draft. Instant game changer
I've been very impressed by his route running and the kid is a beast. I know we probably have other spots of need but man, if Stafford can really get on point - I'd argue we'd have the best WR corps in the NFL.
If we couldn't have him at Michigan, might as well have him in Detroit.
That's all there is to it. He was sending out pictures of himself in a Browns' jersey and talking about how awesome that would be. He's no fool, he wants the best K he can get.
Link?
Just saw it here.
I haz a sad now.
It's fitting that he looks sad to be in a Browns uniform.
Weird, so do I
Bumblebee (Golden) and Optimus Prime. Forgot about Pettigrew. He is Grimlock.
then who's Rodimus Prime? And Ultra Magnus? I was always a Sideswipe fan, myself. How can you not love a red Lamborghini Countach (and his yellow brother, Sunstreaker; Red Alert; and another one i can't think of)? And Wheeljack was so cool, too. A Lancia Stratos scientist? Awesome. And Jazz, a Porsche 935 (or was he a 911 slant nose? I think the former). I also had Mirage, an open wheel race car; Prowl was cool - a Datsun 280Z.
And dinobots, man! I had Slag, Grimlock, and Swoop. I also pretended that Jetfire was a Robotech VF-1 Valkyrie.
Wait, what were we talking about again?
"Sammy Watkins wants earliest team available to select him, so that maximum cash gets into pocket; doesn't care if Lions"
both committed way back when....in another time and space?
Watkins never committed. He had strong interest for a while, and we had his good friend (and teammate?) Dallas Crawford committed. Until RR got left.
Yeah, Watkins and Crawford were high school teammates.
On a side note, we recruited Dallas Crawford as a cornerback, and he became Miami's starting running back when Duke Johnson got hurt during the 2013 season.
This reminds of college recruit quotes saying things like "I'm honored and excited that they offered me" or "they are in my top group" or "I'll certainly consider that school"...........
The Lions should draft Defense.
Take an outstanding defensive back or possibly a linebacker, and then find a receiver with their 2nd round pick. There will be plenty of good receivers still available then. That would be my choice.
This .gif from the comments section of PoD is pretty amazing. Sorry for no imbed.
There were some good ones, to be sure, and like others said, Watkins is probably trying to maximize his value and go as high as he can in the draft. I don't think anyone would blame him for that. Certainly, you do like to hear someone describe the potential as "Megatron and Starscream with Soundwave (Tate) in the slot". I think I could live with that, as a Lions fan.
Well, the Browns do have an earlier pick in the draft, so if they want him, they could take him.
Dude,
The Lions have needs all over the field and they just dropped some serious salary cap on another wide receiver. Matt Millen is no longer the GM; no way the Lions give away draft picks and neglect so many other concerns to over-cover a situation they have already addressed.
Will. Not. Happen. Go peddle your draft stock elsewhere.
BTW, I still want the Lions to sign Avant. We need us some mature leadership, and I'm OK with additional WRs at a reasonable price.
To date, he is the only player I have ever been in favor of the Lions trading up to draft.
Does this mean we'll be drafting a receiver in the first round?
Somebody order a round of collarbone tests.
That offense would have the potential to be off the charts, crazy good.
But knowing the Lions, even if they drafted Watkins, they'd find some way to screw things up and miss the playoffs.
The problem on offense is between Stafford's ears. The coaches need to get him thinking and acting like a championship QB on the field. His reckless passing style has cost the Lions too many close games. Hopefully, Caldwell will do some good. in this area.
Reckless gunslinging isn't always a bad thing.
Here's whom the Lions should draft:
- Taylor Lewan
- Jeremy Gallon
- Michael Schofield
- Fitzgerald Toussaint
- Thomas Gordon
- Cameron Gordon
That would bizarrely fill all of their needs.
Also +1 for use of "whom."
FWIW he posted pictures to Instagram page in Browns, Rams, Bucs, and Lions jerseys. As a biased Lions fan, the Lions would be the best place for him. However, if they can't trade up, I'd take Anthony Barr or Khalil Mack if either falls that far. I think drafting Gilbert or Dennard would be a reach at 10.
He won't get past Oakland

Al Davis is dead. When he was alive, he definitely had a type of player he liked and Watkins would fit that mold. No one knows what they will look to do now.
I know everyone jokes about the Lions always drafting too many WRs, but wow, having watkins on the lions would make that offense so much fun to watch

A few weeks ago, I told a guy I'd eat my socks if Watkins, Tate, and Megatron were all playing for the Lions in Week 1.
In the event that I must eat my socks, how do you suggest I prepare them?

As someone who got pretty discouraged with Stafford last season, I'd have to say that if he had Calvin, Watkins and Tate and didn't make a Pro Bowl next year, we'd know we have a loser on our hands.
