way ot: time to vent...

sorry to bother you all with this but i have to get this off of my chest.

last saturday was my wedding. and before you ask why did you have it the night of the iowa game, let me explain. when we picked the date and saw that michigan was playing iowa i figured it would be a noon game. but of course its the first game released and its a 8pm start. but that is not what i am pissed about.

as i said last saturday was my wedding night. the ceremony went great, pictures went great (we used the law quad), and the reception was out of this world awesome. the only thing that went wrong while i was still coherent enough to care was my father in-law's cousin getting arrested for being beyond smashed and taking a swing at one of my grooms men and one of the brides maids.

now here is where it went to shit. the next morning as we were loading up cars to leave the hotel, my sister in-law comes running outside and asks if i gave anyone permission to go into the room where the gifts were being held. i said no and asked why. her response was that someone told the front desk at the hotel that they were the best man and said that they had permission from the groom to go into that room and drink. well the thing is my best man was back in canada by 1:30am. well this person saying he was my best man and 3 others, maybe more went into this room that was under lock and key and unwrapped all of the gifts, stole $100 cash that we know of from a card that was with one of the gifts, and broke a plastic cup that was part of a gift, took the left over cake and smeared it on the walls, and puked in a gift.

the cops were called, they looked at the situation, took the broken plastic cup to see if they could get a print off of it. and told us that they would handing it off to the ann arbor detective unit and to call them on thursday. so yesterday my wife called the detective on her way to work and then detective called me back at home and told me, that they have video tape of the these people being let into the room and had the names of these people. and went on to tell me that it was the other wedding party that was staying in the hotel (their reception was not at the hotel). so i am thinking f'n right these kids are screwed. well today the detective talked to my wife and told her that 4 people are saying that they didn't do it because the groom told them to stay away from the gifts. my wife asked then how do you explain all of our gifts being unwrapped, money taken, gift broken, and the left over cake being smeared all over the place. all the detective could say is that unless they can lift a print off of the broken cup linking one of them, there is nothing they can do right now. because its our word agaisnt theirs and there aren't cameras in that room.

and you would think lifting a print would be easy, but it has to go to the state police crime lab and they are backed up 6 months.

my wife is on verge of losing her mind because of this, 18 months of planning and its amazing how one shitty thing can ruin it all.

and since i know you're all going to ask what ann arbor hotel it is, i will give you a couple of hints because i don't want to say the name:

its at the corner of US-23 and plymouth rd.
there is a big boy across the street from it.
the bar attached has a volly ball court outside of it.

Holiday Inn? I stayed there a couple times, and wouldn't recommend it. All aspects of the service left something to be desired. Sorry to hear about your wedding, I was worried you were going to say they cleaned you out. What's the hotel doing to make it right?

my wife asked then how do you explain all of our gifts being unwrapped, money taken, gift broken, and the left over cake being smeared all over the place.

... the puke in the present??/? Why didn't she ask about that?

DNA and all, you know?

Sorry to hear that story; the front desk person should never have allowed anyone without a key into that room. I hope you get something out of this and can put it behind you; you've got your whole lives ahead of you.

for negligence? The people AT A MINUMUM lied to get into the room. That is basically breaking and entering. Unless the AAPD detective is retarded
those guys can't walk. I would suggest hiring a competent lawyer to go after those guys and also the hotel for damages.

You should say the name. That is ridiculous. The hotel should not be letting anyone into your hotel room regardless of how they are related to the wedding unless it is you or your wife. This is how free market works. They fix their shit or they will get blacklisted by the internet and suffer a loss in business.

I am glad you mentioned this because I am getting married next year and I am going to specifically tell the hotel (it is another hotel, but still) that we are the only ones allowed in the room.

That still sucks, and I am sorry to hear that.

Duder- I'm no law professor (I take their words over real lawyers), but if your contract says that you were the only ones allowed in the room, and they let OTHER PEOPLE in the room, they are completely liable for everything that happened. End of story. Screw the jerks who did it, because there is very little chance of actually convicting them of anything. The hotel's duty was to the contract, not even to you, and they blew it.

Just got married this summer at the Sheraton in Ann Arbor, and the experience was great, but if something like this would have happened my wife would have freakin flipped out. Good luck getting some justice.

was holding it together during the whole thing on sunday. i was the one flipping out, to the point where she told me to go outside cause i was so pissed. the people working the front desk wouldn't even look me in the eye for the rest of the time we were there. and i think the front desk manager was scared for his life.

There is a difference. The cops can't do anything without the proper burden of proof, but that can't stop you from proceeding without them. There is also two level of civil. The first is using an attorney and going after the 4 people and the hotel hardcore. The second is taking the 4 people to small claims for the max value the state will allow for the damage to gifts, etc. You will have to fight and prove this on your own. Shouldn't be too hard since there is sufficient video to show they were the only ones to enter the room and they were not supposed to be there. See if they have the balls to lie to a judge. Second, you can take the hotel to small claims for the max amount and get all your money back for breach of contract. Again, point out to the judge that you were the only ones allow in, show the video.

p.s. the max allowable in Michigan is $3,000.

At the veery least they should refund you all the fees and stuff. That is the most horrible thing I've heard about weddings.

Man, I always just thought they were great for getting laid. I never thought I could make off with some of the gifts and money as well! ***SARCASM ALERTS***DING DING DING WEEEOOOWEEEEOOOO

Its a real shame that people don't even respect a wedding day.

but I'm surprised the cops did what they did over a $100 bucks and a broken cup. I had my condo broken into and the cops wouldn't even try to get a print, let alone do any real investigating. I told them my neighbor had a crack-head boyfriend who saw me leaving with my suitcases (was going to Vegas), and I don't think they even ever questioned the guy. 99.9% sure it was him.

I understand your frustrations, but the cops are on a budget, overworked, and likely won't do anymore for you. It would seem if you bitch enough to the hotel they should reimburse whatever is missing and comp you a couple free nights, as they are the ones that dropped the ball.

It's not about the $100 and the broken cup. A wedding is supposed to be one of the greatest experiences of someone's lifetime and these guys ruined it. You can't put a value on experiences.

It probably sucks right now, but maybe you're old it can be one hell of a story to tell the grandkids.

You could bring your own cause of action against these guys. It might be difficult to prove these guys did this beyond a reasonable doubt, but it would be much easier under a preponderance of evidence standard (more than 50% likely). Of course, it may not be worth the time and money, especially if they have no money. Congrats on the wedding. If it makes you feel any better, my brother-in-law dropped our wedding cake as he carried it into the reception hall.

This is reminiscent of the Erin Andrews BS, allowing that creep to book rooms next to hers without informing her (like even that would make it OK.)

I'm sorry about this. My wife and I make a point, in situations like to this, to go over the top in making it up to ourselves. Our best to you both.

First off, congrats on getting married.

Second, if the amount is under $3,000 (which it sounds like it) you can take the hotel to small claims court if you don't get anything from the insurance company.

Should be a pretty open and shut case. You had a contract, they violated the terms of the contract by letting someone else into the room. You suffered damages.

... Video of group going into room
Video of group coming out of the room
Nobody else going into room until someone goes in and sees the damage done.

I assume video is always running. That sounds like more than enough to make a criminal case -- you don't always need prints, do you?

is an eyewitness, right? Between that, the video tape and the hotel guest list, they should be able to round up most of the other party and ID them. The hotel is responsible becaus ethey unlocked the door and didn't check an ID. I'd get a lawyer in a minute.

If your wife is losing her mind over this, tell her I said this is peanuts compared to spending the rest of her life with a Michigan Fan.

I would probably take this to the top - complain to whoever you can at corporate for Holiday Inn.

If you feel they don't do "enough" for you, then I'd try to spread as much negative publicity about the hotel as possible - go to any site where you can review them and give a shortened version of what you posted on here.

Best of luck man, hope the honeymoon makes up for it.

If Les Miles were the coach at Michigan this never would have happened. Thankfully I transported myself to a more accurate and alternative time paradox and watched this play in real time:

00goblue00: Thank you president McCain, I will come be the new Secretary of Boobie Things tomorrow. For now I am at a wedding.

Drunk brahs: Hey, we made groom tell people it was us coming for the presents to drink there. Right?

Hotel clerk: Sure, right this way gentlemen.

Drunk brahs: You so peculiar when you feel like cotton sheets. Look at those tits!

00goblue00: Sorry boys, reserved for Les Miles only.

Drunk brahs: Miles are less than savory.

-2 hours later-

Drunk brahs: Lets smash this plastic cup. Where should I puke?

00goblue00 and Les Miles: (in unison) NOT SO FAST DBAGS!

00goblue00: Get 'em Mad Hatter!

Les Miles: GO BLUE AND GET THE FUCK OUT OF THIS DAMN FINE PRESENTS ROOM! GET AWAY FROM THESE DAMN FINE PRESENTS, AND KEEP YOUR PAWS OFF OF THIS DAMN FINE LADIES' DAMN FINE BREASTS!

Drunk brahs: ZOMG we must be leaving for we are in tired places with big boobs!

00goblue00: (wets herself) Les... take me forever!

Les Miles: Damn... fine...

Congratulations on your marriage, but as to your story it is pegging out the WTF Meter. I admire how well you're handling this. Myself, I'd be tempted to find out where these guys live, grab a couple of friends, a roll of duct tape, and a sack of doorknobs and see where my imagination took me.

While I agree that this is a shitty situation, and that the people who did this should suffer the consequences, DNA is still a very expensive and time consuming procedure to run. If you got down to it, they could have lifted hairs and fibers off of the gifts and matched them to the 4 people as well.... they probably chose not to because in the grand scheme of things, this is less important than a rape or a murder.

And to clarify, I know that AA doesn't get a lot of those, but crime labs across the nation are backed up with DNA evidence. Submitting this wouldn't be the most responsible thing for a police agency to do.

You need to go all out on this.

You will have many test as a husband, this is your first, and in some ways will lay the foundation of your future,

These assholes ruined part of a very special day for your wife. You need to extract blood from all of them.

Name the hotel. Tell the story, post it on every website, wedding, travel, ann arbor dot whatever. Be such a pain in their ass and wallet from the bad P.R. that they WANT to make it right.

Go after all the people in the video. Utilize all legal means, sue them individually.

Go after all the people in the video. Utilize all illegal means to make their life hell/ personally I am prone to violence. That's not for everyone, but do what works for you.

Work your ass off to make this right for her. I'd get as close as I could to having the clock turned back. Between those responsible you should endeavor to have every present replaced, re-wrapped and back in the same room.

Plan a special evening for her and then take her to the room with the gifts inside.

Wedding days are a big, big, BIG deal to women. I still don't get it. Taking care of this the right way will pay dividends- - forever.

P.S. You were a dumb-ass for getting married anytime during football season. You'll realize this when your anniversary falls during a Michigan - MSU game or a Michigan game against a good team.
