Great News: Butt back by Big 10 Season

Submitted by StephenRKass on

Great news:  according to the Detroit News, Jake Butt is predicted to be back by the 3rd or 4th game of the season. This would put him in play for Big 10 games, and could make a huge difference by the end of the season.

We are a bit thin in depth at the TE position. Having Butt back will give the offense a lot more in the way of options. Having others play in the first 3 - 4 games gives them game experience before the Big 10. I wonder if this will be the precursor to more 2 TE sets?

It says he will be back no sooner than the 3rd of 4th game. Given that he's only 2 weeks out from having the surgery, I think it's likely they have no idea how his rehab will go at this point.

Praise the whatever. That is very good news. Jake was coming along fairly nicely last season. Hopefully Devin will be able to progress as a WR, but clearly he will be playing more TE early in the season.

From what I read Hoke said, it was more along the lines of 'I haven't talked to Jake's doctor, but I can't imagine it's sooner than week 3rd or 4th week'.  Kind of a big difference than what the News is saying.

This also could mean that his surgery went  very, very well and his Dr is sure he should heal fast and stronger than other surgeries he has performed. Nothing better than a damn good Dr who can do these types of surgery in his sleep. I personally have had my RT Hip replaced 4 diferent times and I found out a couple weeks ago I will be going in for my left hip. The point though is I would not want another dr in the world to touch me other than the one who has replaced my Rt hip 3 of the 4 times. It is a long story why it is not this Dr's fault that I had to have these replacements but it is his fault that I can even walk today and yes play discgolf, very well I might add. Gods have blessed me with a good Dr and I feel lucky to have him so I won't be still trying to rehab this August, but will be out on the course at least spending some of my summer out of the house.

That's excellent news, of course. I really liked what I saw out of Jake Butt last year and was hopeful to see comparable production across more time and more games this year. It will be interesting to see how he factors into Nussmeier's offense, but great that we will have the opportunity to see him in it.

Great news and all, but keep your expectations tempered. Look at Ryan when he came bck from an ACL injury, and how the rest of the year he was just not as effective. We can't expect Butt to come back in and be an impact player right away after his injury.

After he tore his ACL in the Ohio game his freshman year, he was much slower and less agile his sophomore year. Granted he never was a particularly dynamic runner, but it took him a while to fully recover. He was much better his junior year. These are college kids trying to rehab their way back to game shape. Especially Butt, who is still trying to get to optimal college weight and size.

For some reason, whenever I see "Butt," pork butt and the like is the first thing that comes to mind. This could be a sign of several things. Maybe it is because in terms of anatomy, I only use the word with my son to say, "Get your butt in gear." It wouldn't be a term of endearment used with my wife, or daughters, or other women, for that matter.

Man, this really sounds like a self-promoting "well I don't think of women in such a way" kind of post. You know what? I check out my wife's butt, and I tell her when her butt looks good. I don't think there's anything wrong with that, in fact I'm pretty sure my wife likes it. Some women like it when men tell them they're sexy. If you're just not a butt guy, fine. But there's not reason for the whole "I don't view butt as a term of endearment toward woman" is pompous and lame.

I much rather see Butt redshirt this year and come back next year 100%. That's a lot better to me than having him play when is 80-90% like Jake Ryan last year.
