WBB beats Indiana, 82-57 in B1G Tournament 1st Round
The 7 seed Wolverines take on the 10 seed hoosiers of indiana at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indy.
Should Michigan win, they will face 2 seed state tomorrow.
This is most likely the only shot the Women have at an NCAA Tournament appearance.
Go Blue!
EDIT: 9 straight wins over IU.
Ristovski hits a great corner 3 and Michigan leads 19-13 at the media timeout.
Goree, as usual, is dominating out there. She gets it to Ristovski who hits another 3 pointer and IU calls timeout.
Michigan leads 26-13.
would love to watch, on a cold, rainy night, with my daughter.
It's live on BTN. Or if you have a cable provider, give BTN2Go a shot.
Michigan 32-20 at the under 4 timeout.
43-28 Michigan at halftime!
Great first half for Cyesha Goree: 10 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, and 1 steal.
They need this win and one more against state to have a chance at the NCAA tournament
That won't be enough given how high their RPI is. If they get to the title game having beaten Michigan State and Nebraska, then they have a small chance at a bid.
Goree has her 12th double-double of the season.
Michigan is up 53-41. Goree could get a triple-double.
This is my first time watching them, but they seem to have some issues valuing the ball. A better team will hammer them for that. They threw like six or seven passes in a row where it seemed like the goal was to just get it past someone's outstretched hand.
Barnes-Arico really screwed up here waiting for the under 16 timeout. It was obvious that the team was playing terribly, and now they have a chance to hit a FT and cut the lead to 7.
I don't mean to sound overly critical, but I had mouth surgery earlier today, so I might just be a little cantankerous.
I've met Barnes-Arico in person and was favorably impressed, for whatever that's worth.
Well, it turns out that was a charge, so I take the smallest bit of that back.
They really needed that tv timeout, though.
Elmblad has taken 3 charges in one game...
57-45 Michigan at the break.
So we really don't have much beyond this first six, I take it?
On the one hand, the ladies look like they are a bit lacking in discipline - on the other hand, I think they're tired.
Barnes Arico has been playing either 6 or 7 for just about the entire Big Ten. Paige Rakers has gotten some playing time, as has Danielle Williams. Williams got injured in the preseason, otherwise she would probably be seeing the floor more. Kelsey Mitchell would have been in the rotation, but she too suffered a preseason injury. The team will be much deeper next season, so hopefully they won't wear down in the late season as they did this year.
Many thanks for the answer.
Way too many undisciplined/very dicey passes.
63-49 Michigan.
Goree is down after taking a charge. Under 8 to play.
Oy vey.
Goree is out with an injury and Shannon Smith has 4 fouls.
67-49 Michigan but at what cost?
I asked above - do they really have no one who can take them more than six deep?
Barnes-Arico looked near death at that timeout, yikes.
That was nice passing that led to the elbow jumper.
Yeah, it looks like this team is not going to have enough depth to make a run at MSU with so little recovery time.
At least they're saying it's just cramps for Goree - she's been fantastic tonight.
69-49 over the Creanettes.
OK? I just tuned in here and on BTN five minutes ago, and she's been shown now 3 times since then holding here head like she's got a migrane headache.
Not at all okay. Sounds like she might have picked up something nasty from her kids.
I hate to say it but it sounds and looks a little like the flu. Which I'm just getting over and it sucks unbelievably.
There's also a rather nasty cold / sinus infection thing going around, and that is what I am struggling to get over. I almost passed out in a meeting on Tuesday, and I've basically worked only limited hours since. I certainly hope she's on the mend soon enough - some of the crud being passed around at the moment is not fun at all.
Yeah, I say "the flu," but there's some other nasty crap going around. My doctor said I probably have something that is three letters and starts with an R?
I really, really urge you to not try to work through it. I know two people who did, and they had this shit for 9 and 12 weeks, respectively.
Definitely stick to limited hours.
Was it RSV (Respiratory syncytial virus)? Usually seen in kids, but adults can get it too. It can be quite severe. Take care.
That sounds right to me. Apparently, plenty of adults are getting it this winter.
I think (hope, hope, hope) I'm just about over it. But it's been a total life roadblock. Brought everything to a halt.
Even better when we win big! Which, after all, is the way it should be.
Eric Collins is full of shit.
How in the world has MIchigan never lost as a 7 seed when they have never WON the tournament?
He's talking about in the opening game.
Yes, damn, you beat me to it. Barnes-Arico looks like death.
I don't know, Collins is hardly watching.
The best was when he said they had a chance at the and one after the girl threw it off the bottom of the backboard.
That was quality comedy.
This is Eric Collins we're talking about. Listening to him call anything is pure torture.
Nice to see Kelsey Mitchell make her career debut as a Wolverine.
Final Score: 7 Michigan 82 10 Indiana 57!
Their 9th straight win over the hoosiers.
Michigan will play the 2 seed spartans at 6:30pm on BTN, tomorrow.
9 consecutive wins for the Michigan Women over IU. Would I ever love the men to have that long a streak over IU!
Playing THE VICTORS; coach Barnes-Arico finally smiling thru the illness.
And apparently the answer to the "am I intense when watching Michigan play anything?" question, is yes, of course, fucking yes.
I think Mike Hall is the very definition of mediocrity, but he does seem like a nice enough guy.
We'll see tomorrow if the Wolverines can do two things they've never done in the Big Ten Tournament: beat MSU (they're 0-3) and win two games in the same tournament.
but the upcoming game vs. State will be a much much tougher test.
Even if this team doesn't advance any further, though, they've got some talent to build around, especially in Goree. She looks like a dominant player in the middle. But the point made by others above about team ball-handling will continue to be costly unless the rest of the team develops better around Goree. This team clearly missed the playmaking ability of Jenny Ryan and inside presence of Rachel Sheffer this season.
BEAT STATE!
What year is Emblad and where was the regular season game against MSU?
I know this is unspeakably lazy, but I just had mouth surgery, so I have an excuse.
The loss to Stae was by 7 at Crisler, almost 2 months ago.
Thanks for the answer. Seems like maybe they are setting up for a nice run next year.
Barnes-Arico is certainly an intense woman - hope she can get them clicking.
