Predictions: Michigan State

Submitted by LS And Play on

My friends and I are about to head off to Crisler to freeze our asses off in line (only booze can save us), so I need something to keep myself entertained for 6 hours. Predictions everyone?

if we win: more talk on sports radio about michigans basketball has become State basketball while state football has become Michigan football...

This game is huge,  win and we may win the conference outright which would be awesome.  Loss and we can still tie for the conference championship...

I think we lose a close one.  I hope not but if I had to go with a score I would go

MSU 64  Michigan 60

Both teams have shown an uncanny ability to play at both ends of the continuum. If we get the MSU from their last Nebraska game and the Michigan from our last Nebraska game, it's going to be a fun day.

Not really a prediction per se as I have a sneaking suspicion that this game is a good each way bet. Whoever wins will likely not win by much. What I will put up - as usual - are TeamRankings' comparison stats. Worthing noting, of course, is that the four factors, at least on offense, would favor us.

Offense
Mich. St. Michigan
Points/Game 77.6   75.0
Avg Score Margin
+12.3   +10.1
Assists/Game
17.5   14.4
Total Rebounds/Gm 38.1   32.8
Effective FG % 54.0%   55.5%
Off Rebound % 31.3%   27.1%
FTA/FGA 0.339   0.358
Turnover % 14.0%   13.5%
Defense
Mich. St. Michigan
Opp Points/Game 65.3   64.8
Opp Effective FG % 45.1%   48.7%
Off Rebounds/Gm 9.9   7.7
Def Rebounds/Gm 25.8   22.5
Blocks/Game 4.8   2.7
Steals/Game 7.4   5.2
Personal Fouls/Gm 19.0   14.6

As a realist, I think MSU is a better team.  On a neutral court maybe they win by 6.  They're not completely healthy, so I'll bump it down to 4.  I think home court in college hoops is the biggest advantage in any major sport - pro or college - so I think that's worth 4 points at least.

I think it's tied going into the last minute.  Who do I have more faith in getting tough buckets at the buzzer?  Sadly, I think Adrien Payne is the best one-on-one player on the court today.  If MSU has the ball with a chance to win, I think he attacks and wins with a bucket or free throws.

Michigan has lost at home twice in the last two years combined, they've already lost twice here this year, I don't see it happening a third time. Crowd carries the team the whole way and Harris misses and open three at the buzzer

Depends on if we play aggressively on the defense end or not. If we continue to play soft defense because our guys are so scared to foul because they know Beilein will bench them, then we are in trouble. There is a reason we have the fewest fouls of any team in the country and it's not result of playing good defense.

We can't afford to let them have a fast start. In the last four years whoever has started well and executed has won this game. I don't think state will shoot as well they did the other night. If we play our game and get good looks we should be fine.

Michigan needs to force some turnovers and get some easy transition baskets. A week ago, Wisconsin only had 2 turnovers the entire game which obviously made it difficult for Michigan to do anything in transition.

I just hope that the game is an actually good game and the refs are actually good and not abysmal like they were in East Lansing. Please just don't let the refs be horrible. Fair called game both ways, no excuses for the losing teams fans to use on the winning team.

There has never been a rivalry basketball game, where the losing team doesn't have a thing or two to complain about.  Even the winning team things they got jobbed and won in spite of the refs most of the time.

Refs usually do a good job.  Unless there is a blatant error, it's all part of the game.

call today's game, Izzo will still find something to complain about.
