Coach John Thompson - winning the right way
Fascinating incident of Coach Thompson with big-time DC cocaine kingpin

He put a Rayful of God into that young man. An amazing story and I can see why he was that fearful of a man with Big John’s stature.

cool article, but fair warning, have adblock installed. Mine just blocked 395 ads at that link

I got 392. Great story but The Washington Examiner is questionable as a pillar of journalism excellence.

I held out on using ad blockers for a long time but sites like that really made it a necessity.

Always was a fan of the Coach and loved his mid-80s teams. That '85 team may have been the best ever not to win a N.C.

I’d love to see a 4 team playoff of the best teams to never win between them, ‘83 Houston, ‘91 Vegas, and ‘15 Kentucky. I don’t even know who I would pick.

'83 Houston vs. '85 Georgetown
'91 UNLV vs. '15 Kentucky

I’d eliminate ‘15 Kentucky pretty quickly. That team was just too young to match up with Ewing or Olajuwon or Johnson as seniors. Those older teams had veteran players who had been through the battles. I just don’t think that today’s freshmen dominated teams could hang with the veteran teams of yesteryear.

What a badass! That's the kind of leadership you look for in a great coach. Someone send this to Urban for his leadership class immediately.

John Thompson & his Georgetown teams were one of my favorites when I first started following college basketball. His relationship with his players was something special. I see much the same with Beilein. Loves his guys.

If the article discusses (didn't click as per the adware warnings) John Thompson putting word out to Rayful Edmond to steer clear of his basketball players, this is factual. Several clubs were fairly popular during the late 80s in the area - East Side, Chapter III/The Mirage, Celebrity Hall - and Rayful Edmond was known for showing up in flashy clothes/cars (additionally, he enjoyed playing pickup basketball. Oftentimes big games would be held in Barry Farms, where Suitland Parkway and 295 intersected). John was well respected in all circles throughout the area, and was extremely protective of his players. They met, John gave him a piece of his mind, and Rayful kept his distance from that point forward.

Coach Thompson was a tough act. Fair but tough.
Back up to Bill Russell on Celts, Controlled his environment on the Hoyas, but made his players go to school. Not many like him now.

Couldn’t resist it, huh? Positive, deserves a negative. Amazing.

And Urban Meyer had bible studies with Aaron Hernandez....
Winning with character and principle.

I always held John Thompson in the highest regard both as a man and a coach.
Right up there with Bo, Woody and some others.
