M wrestling beats Maryland 34-4
This was an absolute beat down. MD won one match, and that was because Michigan sat their starter. The dual featured one matchup of ranked wrestlers at heavyweight, Parris won this match 6-2. Next up Rutgers on Sunday for the final dual, which will feature a big time matchup of Micic vs Suriano. Micic is ranked #1 at 133lbs but that weight class is stacked and this will be a big match.
125 -- Jack Medley (U-M) dec. Brandon Cray, 7-1 [U-M, 3-0]
133 -- #1 Stevan Micic (U-M) pinned Orion Anderson, 1:36 [U-M, 9-0]
141 -- #6 Kanen Storr (U-M) dec. Danny Bertoni, 7-2 [U-M, 12-0]
149 -- Malik Amine (U-M) dec. Alfred Bannister, 11-9 [U-M, 15-0]
157 -- #5 Alec Pantaleo (U-M) major dec. Ryan Diehl, 13-4 [U-M, 19-0]
165 -- #7 Logan Massa (U-M) tech. fall Phillip Spadafora, 18-2 (7:00) [U-M, 24-0]

question: have the college weight classes changed over the years? i remember back in my day guys like the rechsteiner brothers wrestling at what i thought was, for instance, 177 and 191. do i misremember that?
okay, google is my friend. found this from 1998 chicago tribune article:
The NCAA Wrestling Rules Committee has recommended several changes regarding weight control--including new weight classes--in response to the deaths of three athletes last year.
Because of the deaths, the NCAA put in several midseason changes. The new recommendations, which are expected to be implemented, are further adjustments.
Weight classes are now to start at 125 pounds instead of 118. The heavyweight limit is to be boosted 10 pounds to 285. Other new classes will be 133, 141, 149, 157, 165, 174, 184 and 190. The old weight classes were 118, 126, 134, 142, 150, 158, 167, 177. 190 and 275.

Solid post. Weight control is a tough subject in combat sports.

This. People literally start to lose their minds. The sweat suits worked wonders tho. You could actually kill off a couple quick pounds of water weight to get you back on track before a weigh in

I wrestled in high school and once weighed in at 151 lbs two hours before a weigh in for the 145 lbs class. I thought I was screwed. I put on the sweat suit and alternated jogging and wrestling. When I jumped on the scale I weighed 142 lbs. Thankfully I didn't have to do that often.

Went from 131 to 115 in a day before. Do not recommend.

Super bad for the kidneys. I did similar shit in HS. I ran before weigh in every time

Thankfully I only did something that drastic once.

UM wrestling seems like it got good fast under the new coach.

We were good under the last coach. Still not at the level to compete for a NC though.

It will be interesting to see how we do at nationals. That will tell a lot about whether we can get to the next level. We’re definitely a good team though!

Bormet does seem to have taken us up a notch.

Very solid program under McFarland. Continuing to perform strongly. Always 1 or 2 holes away from being at the top. Penne State has unbelievable line ups regularly and we are typically 1 or 2 weight classes away from a win there. I can see us turning the corner in the next few years possibly. I’d love to see our wrestlers continue to scrap for points at all times in the match though. Any time you can turn a decision into a MD by being relentless and out conditioning, you are going to find ways to win those close ones.

Let’s make it a beat Maryland weekend.

What is the ceiling for this squad? Watching them against Penn State, it was clear that a national championship is out of the question. Seems to me that a top 3 finish would be a good result. What say ye MGoBloggers?
February 16th, 2019 at 12:08 PM ^
I think the ceiling is similar to last year - 4th at NCAAs. PSU is a lock to win it once again. Iowa, OSU and the other OSU (Ok St) are the other top competitors, all safely behind PSU. I could see anything from 2nd to 5th.
February 16th, 2019 at 12:52 PM ^
Agreed, the ceiling this year is a second place finish, but anything in the top 5 would be good. Next year PSU should take a step back, so let’s hope they can build on this.

Terp/sweep weekend?
GO BLUE

And we just whooped their basketball team. If we could make open 3s, we would have won by 25.
Go blue.
March is coming.
