Michigan is 1-3 when Lewis Garrison refs

Submitted by bluesalt on February 12th, 2019 at 11:31 PM

And 21-0 when anyone else does.  That is a problem, B1G.

Our only win was in the opener against Norfolk State (although I couldn’t find the refs for the South Carolina game.)

I try not to be a conspiracy theorist, but for all of Michigan’s losses to have been significantly affected by officiating, and for there to be a common denominator in all of those crews, and for that same official to have not been present for any win outside of a tuneup opener (which was honestly a closer game than openers should go), and I can’t help but wonder, and get so angry as to write run-on sentences!

That is the most interesting stat of the night. Is Lewis the ref who t-ed him up twice? That's crap.

The boys fought back, cutting 16 all the way to 4, and then looked to run out of gas.

They ran out of petrol when Poole decided to make it about himself with two hero ball evasive heaves in a row.  That turned a run (and a quickly dwindling lead) into a 9 point deficit and sent momentum right back to Ped St.

I love Poole's relentless swagger and willingness to shoot, but he has to learn when to throw it up.  Those two desperate heaves were so far out of line of the offensive flow that even my wife noticed it ("why did he do that?"), and she can't spell basketball!  I'll side with Beilein in wondering what the hell those shots were!

The bright side for Poole - he's a true sophomore and still has time to grow.  He'll get the time and space he needs to continue improving - but until he's a little more mature he'll continue to be a liability in games like last night, when he's not shooting well in a tight game.

Yup.  That was a terrible game by Poole.  Any thoughts of him going pro should be shut down over nights like that.  Sadly I don’t think he is the kind that will care to hear that he needs another year of development.  He marches to his own drummer and I would be surprised if he came back for another year.

This crew looked like they were corupt or inept.  It had to be at least one if not both.

I’m tired of the Big Ten leadership with their head in the sand.  Delaney needs to go.

I blame the commissioner for taking a laissez-faire attitude towards competence and bias.

Jim Kemerling is a perfect example.   He played baseball at MSU.   He was roommates with my good buddies Dad.  We once had a discussion regarding ref bias and my buddies Dad said Jim had told him “I always try to call it fair but if it’s close or I’m not sure than I call it MSU’s way.  Jim Kemerling an MSU grad should not officiate MSU games.

That is about as easy a fix as it was to fix having your own boosters keep the time clock.  They wave a little flag over self evaluation.  Its bullshit and with so much money involved there should be oversight.

You are naive at best if you don’t think two best buddies, college roommates, don’t talk openly about their jobs, sports, and their loyalty to their alma mater over beers.

Knowing my buddies Dad, who said this directly to his son and me over beers, this is not something he would just invent.

Having watched Jim Kemerling officiate UofM vs MSU games as well as games for each school I don’t have a shred of doubt.

Did you not watch the UofM OSU game last year?  Some refs should be working some games.  It’s not hard to figure it out.

I mean it's a four game sample, and with the exception of the one win, they were all road games too. What's our record with him in the past, say, five years? Unless people think he only just recently developed a grudge against Michigan

Wait, so we've had him 3 times in the last 8 games, and only 1 time in the two years before that?? Is that absurdly unlucky or did a bunch of refs get put out of jobs? TV Teddy was garbage, but at least he was randomly garbage so that you knew he wasn't going against your team, he was just incompetent

I assume that he must have graded out well?

He's done 12 Big Ten conference games this year; Michigan has been in three of them.  Last year, he did 6, plus one in the Big Ten Tournament.  In '16-17, he did 8, plus one in the Big Ten Tournament.  In '15-16, he did 9 Big Ten games.

Now, the Big Ten does have more games this year, but it still seems like he's trending upwards in terms of the amount of work he's offered.

I would like to know in the games he has done, outside of Michigan, are there other trends?  For example - does the home/road foul disparity seem odd compared to other games?

There are advanced stats for everything, seems like we should be able to get them for refs.  My impression of this guy is that he is more swayed by the home team/arena.  Admittedly this is a small sample size and you can't argue that Michigan played well in those games.  However, you can also point to this:

  • Michigan is one of the most foul averse teams in the country, and yet in the games this guy ref'd we have had players foul out.  Has anyone fouled out in a game he didn't ref?
  • John Beilein hasn't been ejected in literally 40 years.  They ejected him last night.  I've seen a lot of coaches do a lot of yelling and screaming at refs and unless John insulted his heritage I am surprised what he did last night got him two T's.

While I don’t approve of conspiracy theories, the fact is we have had this clown in 3 of our last 8 games.

How many crews does the B1G have?

To me, you should never see the same crew that often.

Its not really that big of a conspiracy theory to believe there are crooked referees in sports. We have proof its happened and that games were fixed. Whenever there are millions of dollars on the line there will be corruption.

Personally Im positive games are fixed across all professional sports and NCAA FB and NCAA BB

Well, he wasn't the only official who had a bad game. I mean if you were to deduct the points that PSU got from the two technicals, the missed double-dribble call, plus the Simpson wipeout on the illegal screen as the first half buzzer sounded, that's a seven point swing. But no matter, Beilein was going to get a tech regardless of whether he was ejected for pushing the envelope.

What upset him were the phantom shooting fouls called on his guys. I mean these were non-contact calls leading to points when you get contact on the way to the basket, and this contact is just ignored or not considered in the same regard.

So, you can debate that. But this is so perplexing. Because you have guys on the perimeter getting foul calls and guys going to the basket who have to do something special in order to get to the line. And then you have the makeup calls where the contact that was not called is now illegal because the officials have given Michigan 3 team fouls in the first minute of the second half because of Beilein's ejection.

That to me, just references the fact that the league is emphasizing officiating calls on the outside and letting them play underneath. What that implies is they want to keep guys in games and give them the benefit of the doubt otherwise. Just call the game the way the rulebook is written.

got to 16 points after beyond terrible calls and non-calls.   The biggest one not on your list was Simpson getting run over while breaking the press leading to a run out 2 (after the offensive rebound).  Next for me was the held ball on Simpson where the big guy was in his cylinder and then the other guy grabbed his arm 3 times before touching the ball.

There were a lot of missed calls, which happens, but I have never seen a Coach get a T at halftime, let alone quickly ejected at half time.  It's JB's first ejection since he was 26 years old.  Don't know if Garrison ejected him, but whoever did ought to find new work.

It sure seemed like the 2nd T and ejection were because the ref said something to Beilein as he walked away.  You can see Beilein turn and lose it st that point.

The refs stupidity, ignorance, and disrespect at that point were probably too much for Beileins rational mind to comprehend.
