"Pat Perles, 55, has built a long resume of coaching since playing linebacker at and graduating from MSU in 1987. He was a defensive assistant with the Los Angeles Rams in 1992, and was on the Kansas City Chiefs staff helping the linebackers and offensive line from 2009-2011. His last known job was as a scout for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
He has spent significant time coaching in the college, including at his alma mater from 2000-02, working with the tight ends. He began his coaching career as a defensive line coach at Toledo and worked on offensive at North Dakota State, eventually as coordinator from 2005-08. He also was the offensive line coach at Syracuse in 2013."

This isn't some anti-Sparty screed but isn't his coaching career relatively undistinguished for a 55 year-old man (at least based on what I read in this post)? Just wondering how he scored this gig? (and yes, I know, he's "only" an analyst).

Well, being an analyst really isn't that distinguished of a position. It's a step below being an official staff member.

The analysts get paid far less than the coaches, around $100K. Harbaugh likes to bring in guys with experience elsewhere who might be able to add a different perspective.

2 things here: (1) I get that analysts make far less than coaches, but a 100k gig isn't exactly volunteering either (for context, the average family of 4 in the US makes about 60k per year). So yeah, not "great" money and not a ton of prestige but certainly not nothing, which brings me to (2) His trajectory doesn't reek of high skill level or much demand: at the collegiate level defensive line coach at Toledo and worked on offensive at North Dakota State, eventually as coordinator from 2005-08. Parlayed that coordinator gig into Kansas City Chiefs staff helping the linebackers and offensive line (2009-2011). And then . . . offensive line coach at Syracuse in 2013. Possibly a scout after that? So last known job was 6 years ago. I'm still left wondering why him?

The "last known job" wording from the original article was kind of weird.
It's not easy to find, but I did find via Google searching that Perles WAS a scout for Tampa Bay for all of 2014-2017, and was an analyst at the University of Kansas last year.
So, he's been employed. He hasn't been out of a football job for several years running now.
This doesn't strike me as an odd hire. Analysts, you can have a whole bunch of them. And it seems like "older guys with decent but not great resumes" isn't completely uncommon for folk who fill the role.

Fair enough (and thank you for the additional information). I definitely don't know how to distinguish between the resumes of a strong analyst candidate v. a relatively weaker one. His career trajectory doesn't see all that great (which also might be irrelevant to his capabilities as an analyst) BUT that he hasn't been out of football for years seems important. In the end, I trust Coach Harbaugh's decision making more than mine! :)

When it comes to analysts I'd rather have the 20-something yet to do anything big but full of potential over the 50-something with a "meh" resume all things considered.

The 20 somethings become GAs and get to work directly with the players. Analysts are mostly experienced coaches between jobs that can give some advice to the coaches. It's not a job where you make a name for yourself and move up the coaching ladder.

It's certainly preferable to the asinine shuffling around of the same mediocre coaches Mork is doing in East Lansing...

Something about all this cross-breeding of coaches seems really mercenary-like. Just shows that its a business and loyalties are not really relevant unless there is a paycheck. I'll go back to my fan bubble now.

This stinks. Bo was 17-4 against msu. 3 of those losses were to George Perl-@ss led teams. In 1989 Michigan beat staee 10-7 in Bo's final season and it was a hard fought win, which cemented his dominance over msu/Perl-@ss --- Then, I was SICK when staee beat UM in 1990 - totally sick.
During 1994–1995, an extensive external investigation conducted by the law firm of Bond, Schoeneck & King, PLLC. uncovered various infractions including grade tampering by an athletic department administrator. MSU president M. Peter McPherson fired Perles before the end of the 1994 season, and ordered the Spartans to forfeit their five wins for that season. Perles was found "not culpable".....
The name "Perles" and Michigan don't belong together.
