Analysis: Michigan’s offense was acceptable, again. They got a goal early from Raabe, which was quickly followed by a power-play finish from Will Lockwood. From there, they mostly kept the game under control until a few late breakdowns. They often tested Drew DeRidder, including creating a few OMRs (no spoilers). By no means was it overwhelming, but when they’re given a lead, Michigan is going to attack conservatively and not put themselves in position to give up silly goals.

Analysis: State’s offense is Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. When the KHL line is on the ice, they are extremely dangerous. When any other line is on the ice…they’re not. Michigan mostly contained the Spartan attack, though, including the KHL line. I thought that line might not have been aggressive enough? However, their offensive system has been the opposite of that of Penn State’s, who loves to shoot. The Spartans like to move the puck and look for a dangerous shot. That’s what they did tonight. Michigan didn’t give up a volume of attempts, but they did give up a number of quality looks. Again, most of those came after the Wolverines had built a lead and were nursing the game to the end. Moyle and Morgan added empty-netters, otherwise it got a bit dicey for the last few minutes.

Analysis: Michigan finally scored a power play goal for the first time in five games and after a horrendous man-advantage weekend in Minneapolis. Lockwood did the honors with a loose puck in front of the crease. After that, they generated a few looks including a crazy 4v1, but could not convert again.
The Wolverines were mostly fine again on the Kill. The biggest part is that they really are not taking a ton of penalties. Michigan only had to kill three of them tonight. They did lose Mitchell Lewandowski in front of the net and he buried a rebound. That was the only blemish. However, the Spartan power play is the KHL line and they might be the most productive line in hockey.
Bit of a surprise start, but Strauss gave a Mann-ly performance [Bill Rapai]

Analysis: The game started slowly for the newly inserted Strauss Mann. He didn’t have much to do until the second period. Once the game was about halfway done, he really stepped up, though. He stoned Hirose from point-blank twice. He also generally controlled his rebounds and positioned himself well. Both goals were shot on his doorstep –the first after he made a great save from distance on the power play. I don’t think Hayden Lavigne necessarily deserved to be pulled after last night, but Mann looked the part and turned in a fine performance. I’m guessing Lavigne gets the net on Tuesday in South Bend, but I also would not be nervous with either option.
Nolan Moyle is the latest Wolverine to post a two-goal evening [Bill Rapai]

Analysis: Michigan generated three OMRs tonight. They had a weird 4v1 on the power play as MSU made a bad change; however, Michigan could not convert. Hughes broke in alone and DeRidder came up huge to keep the game close. Moyle also rushed in on a breakaway and scored with a backhand over DeRidder. Productive offensive OMR evening.
This is where it gets weird. MSU had a 2v1 and Patrick Khodorenko was alone in the slot/crease with Mann faked and on the far post. Instead of scoring in an open net, he dropped it to the top of the House where the puck was eventually cleared. I’ve never seen that before…ever. The killer thing is that would have eventually tied the game, as MSU scored two goals to get within 3-2. Bonkers.

Sweep! Finally!
Amazing how hard it has been to get there. This team can be frustrating but they deserve better results than they've gotten.

So good to beat FYS, and to get a sweep - AMAIZE-ing! (And finally! All the ties, then W, L, W, L, etc., etc., etc., was getting tiresome.)

What is FYS?

There was a hockey game between two rivals. It was late in the third with the score out of reach, when the team losing had one of their Rhodes Scolars sucker punch a player on the other team. While the sucker punched player was on the ground, another Rhodes Scholar hacked at the down player — around his neck.
the student section started a new chant that goes by the initials, F Y S. The name, for the hockey team, has stuck.

It’s related to this horrifying incident. I was in the stands that night and it was borderline criminal.

Outstanding sweep.
It seems Hockey is hitting their stride late to make a run.... Sing the Song!

Was a fun game to watch. Hope the team keeps up the intensity the rest of the season.

Woo, that script blue jersey is solid. Only wish they hadn't decreed that only the Block M was acceptable on the shoulders.
