Duke v. UVA, Saturday Night Hoops, NCAA tourney Speculation, Beverage, etc

Submitted by xtramelanin on February 9th, 2019 at 6:12 PM

Mates,

UVA v. Duke just tipped off.  Very interesting game to watch for those so disposed to do so.  Glad for our Wolverines with a hard-nosed win v. a talented and determined UW.   The NCAA released its initial top seeding and we came out at #6, getting a 2 seed.   Its Saturday night (almost) and you have your BBQ lit and a cup of (beverage) in your hand.

2 Questions:

1.  So who wins UVA v. Duke (may not choose 'meteor')

2.  Speculate like crazy about the NCAA seedings, only what, a month away from the real deal.

Have a great night and congrats again to the maize and blue - muppet worthy effort today.

1) When Duke plays like this, no one will beat them. They win tonight, and I think they win big. By 15-20, anyway.

2) At this point, a two seed for us seems about right. All the teams ahead of us, with the exception of maybe Kentucky, deserve to be ahead of us. So I’m good with it.

Not Gonzaga IMO. They're good, but we've played a much more challenging schedule.

They've played 3 really tough opponents, and are 1-2. They beat Duke, but lost to Tennessee and NC.

It's not their fault they play in a crappy league, but they do.

We play a much much tougher schedule. And we beat the crap out of NC.

Its not atrocious. Its non-existent. Couple that with no hand-checking and no travelling/palming and voila!

I got tapes(vhs for the kids) of Joe Dumars if someone wants to watch defense.  Oh, and one of the guys he matched up with was better than anyone of the guys in the NBA now.  Jordan in his prime goes for 40 plus 95% of the games he would play in in todays NBA.

Nearly an even bigger day for UM. UNC beat Miami and Villanova lost by 1 to Marquette.  The two big non-conference wins are still looking pretty good.

If Duke continues to pound UVA then Michigan should be able to move past them.  Still no reason for Gonzaga and Nevada to be ranked ahead of UM.

Villanova losing does not help UM, it may not hurt, it won't help.  Gonzaga has the best win and their two losses are much better than Michigan's, so there two reasons to rank Gonzaga ahead of UM.  If both teams win out, it will be close, maybe the UNC common opponent will give UM the edge over Gonzaga.

Pretty sure that's irrelevant.  They don't pick the best team in the west to be the one seed in the west.  They seed teams 1-68 and go down the list slotting them into regions based on location and conference rules.

So if they thought Michigan was the 4th best team, Michigan would be the 1 seed in the west.   That's it.

Not sure I agree.  M blew out one of the teams that beat Gonzaga.  M plays in a night-in, night-out tougher conference.  That's not even debatable.

Their best win, over Duke on a neutral court, is definitely good, but neither they nor Nevada plays in a league anywhere near the B1G.

Gonzaga is number one in the net rankings after yesterday's games, Michigan is 6th. The committee pretty much followed the net rankings in announcing their top 16 on Saturday, with some variation within the seeding.  I think Duke and Gonzaga have locked up 1 seeds, so best bet for Michigan is for Virginia to be knocked out (as I noted previously they play @UNC, @VaTech and maybe Duke again in the acc tourney), or for Tennesee and Kentucky to knock each other out. They have a home and home and could play in the sec tourney as well.  Michigan doesn't have to win out to get a 1 with their remaining schedule, a loss on the road at MSU or Maryland would not lower UM's ranking or at most only one spot.

duke starting out 7-10 shooting, including 5-5 from the 3.  on the road.

now has cooled off, only 8-12 and 6-7 from 3.

This Duke squad is one of the most physically gifted in the top 6 spots or so in a long time.  When they decide to space the floor and move the ball, they are almost unstoppable. Jones is very talented, but put X with this group and it would be a juggernaut.

I can never root for Duke, but a UVA loss would be really good for UM's chance at a 1-seed, UVA  still plays @NC and @Va Tech.

True, but then we’d have to worry about unc potentially jumping us (as crazy as that sounds). They close with a lot of opportunities for “big wins” and it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if the selection committee was itching to move them up (despite the waxing they received earlier in the year head-to-head).

I sure hope you're right. But I'm skeptical that the committee would keep UNC off the 1 line if they close by beating Duke twice, I'd think that'd make them a lock.  If we beat MSU twice, they'll probably just chalk it up to St. Izzo having to play weird guys. Conversely, msu would probably rise in the rankings.  I mean, they lost three in a row (two of them nasty) and barely budged in the rankings.  A pair of close losses to Michigan could probably net them a 1 seed. I hope I'm wrong and it's a moot point.  Plus, it probably doesn't matter that much to be a one or a two (outside of Duke's bracket).

When you say budged, do you mean polls or the net rankings?  They didn't budge because of the wins they had coming in, a few of them on the road which net loves.  Net is an algorithm that gets updated daily by a computer, there's no Izzo love or UM hate in that.  The committee will tweak the net rankings for sure but at this point the top 16 has pretty much correlated.

Duke shooting 3s like they're 2005 Duke.  Barret was unconscious for a while there.  Virginia was sloppy though and didn't help themselves by digging an early hole.  They've cleaely settled in a bit and Duke won't keep up the 3s.

UVA needs to keep up the comeback and get this real interesting!  Hopefully a fun finish here in an hour or so.

Would've been nice to see Villanova get the win (I guess I'm sort of a Nova fan for the remainder of the season?) but they had a pretty poor last possession...good game that was though, finally seeing Markus Howard ball.  He good.

Thread jack, but how can Kentucky possibly be put above us? Losses to Seton Hall and Alabama. Best wins are against UNC by 8, 8 point home win over the worst KU team in the last decade and a half, and a road win over Louisville (who has been all over the place this season). That doesn't even compare to a dismantling of UNC, a 27 road win at Nova, a blowout over Purdue, and a win over Wisconsin. They put Kentucky in the top 5 cause they don't know where else to put them, just like every year

There's no way Duke keeps shooting like this for 6 straight games in March/April.  I don't think they even run an offense.  And of course they get to do whatever.

Not rooting for the meteor.  I ain't got no beef with VA.  But it would be great if VA was allowed to play D.

So much hype for a boring game. Our win over UNC looks great. They are tied with Duke for first. Hopefully UNC beats UVA on Monday.

Great win by Michigan over a tough Wisconsin team! The Duke-Virginia game was terrific - two talented squads giving their best against the best.

Who does Gonzaga play tonight?  That powerhouse known as Saint Mary's College.  Losers this year to Utah State, Harvard, Pepperdine, and San Francisco.  Among other dog shit tacos....

What a crock of shit.  Gonzaga should get a #3 seed max just for playing that crap schedule in that horseshit conference.
