SVSU Self-Reports 137 Eligibility Paperwork Violations
Going for a record, perhaps?
Not entirely their fault and the NCAA was more lenient than they could have been, but still...

Somehow the intended title was put as the tag line - can mods edit?

fixed. I guess they operated without a compliance office

In the "Nik a Ca" tradition, I liked the original title better.

This must be the consulting gig Middaugh got after Michigan.
My favorite violation is the athlete who competed 10 semesters AFTER his eligibility expired. TEN! I hope they red-shirted him too.
It's like the Nebraska QB you feel like was there forever...except that these guys REALLY did it.
February 9th, 2019 at 7:42 AM ^
I didn't think that's quite right. I think he competed past his ten eligible semesters. That'd be four years plus a red shirt = 10 semesters. So he was like some of those Staee lineman applying for a sixth year of eligibility.
February 9th, 2019 at 8:38 AM ^
This guy competed 10 decades after his eligibility expired and would have gotten away with it if it weren't for you meddling kids.
February 9th, 2019 at 8:44 AM ^
what they're doing to save costs is to combine the compliance officer with the office of social security applications. SVSU athletes are generally done with eligibility under the SVSU guidelines about the time one should start claiming their SS benefits.

Calling bullshit. 100 is not a legal number.
Although he has a look of determination.

That’s an original XFL jersey. Rules didn’t apply. He had HE HATE ME on the back too, but in his case, HE was his old commanding officer in the army who busted his chops—Ulysses S. Grant.

Is that Taysom Hill?
February 9th, 2019 at 10:24 AM ^
Gotcha, and I'm sure you're right...but still admit to having had a moment of entertainment at misreading it this morning.
February 9th, 2019 at 11:08 AM ^
They competed after their 10 semesters of eligibility were up

This must be Kansas' ball recruiting punishment...
February 9th, 2019 at 8:17 AM ^
I'm assuming no post--season tournament for SVSU means UVA won't have to worry about at least one team in the first round...
(edit: I assumed wrong, probation and small fine but no post-season ban. But no worries, Virginia fans, as SVSU is NCAA div II)

So was Chaminade. Just ask Ralph Sampson.
February 9th, 2019 at 8:37 AM ^
It’s not that the compliance department had any intent to deceive. It’s that the compliance department is bad at, well, compliance. Next thing you know, they will all get jobs at NCAA in the enforcement department. It’s the Wild West people.

Who is SVSUs rival? Grand Valley or Ferris? Both?
February 9th, 2019 at 8:48 AM ^
I would say a general understanding of NCAA rules would be their biggest rival.
February 9th, 2019 at 9:02 AM ^
Northwood University in Midland, MI is SVSU's rival. They play each other in the "Axe Bowl", which is such a big deal that this game was streamed nationwide on ESPN3 in 2018. SVSU beat Northwood 31-10 after consecutive losses to Ferris State and Grand Valley State the weeks before.

No doubt many on this forum night have watched the SVSU Cardinals play the Northwood University Timberwolves as a warm-up for the Michigan vs Penn State game, if they knew the Axe Bowl was being streamed.
February 9th, 2019 at 9:12 AM ^
I thought the Axe Bowl was between MSU and Rutgers?
February 9th, 2019 at 9:25 AM ^
That’s quite a Situation
February 9th, 2019 at 9:27 AM ^
Isn't that the 'Situation Trophy' game?
February 9th, 2019 at 9:34 AM ^
i fear roy's comment will not get nearly the recognition it deserves. a dandy.
February 9th, 2019 at 12:18 PM ^
Thank you for the kind words . . . but in this case, the joke almost wrote itself. I hear "axe" and I think of New Jersey and MSU bros.
February 9th, 2019 at 10:53 AM ^
There was a meta-thread not too long ago discussing the most upvoted posts in site history. I think this comment is worthy of that, just need to get it some more upvotes.

Being from Saginaw and going to Grand Valley, GVSU is by far their biggest rival. However it’s been as lopsided as Michigan-OSU since the early 2000s
February 9th, 2019 at 9:15 AM ^
The Packers must be wondering how organized LaFleur really is right about now.
February 9th, 2019 at 9:16 AM ^
Osu has 137 violations in a month. Rookies
February 9th, 2019 at 11:02 AM ^
They half-assed it as I'm sure they could have found #138 if they looked hard enough.
February 9th, 2019 at 9:26 AM ^
From the full report:
SVSU shall undergo an independent audit of the compliance department operations during the 2018-19 academic year. (self-imposed.) In addition, SVSU shall have a similar audit during its final year of probation.
Of course, the report makes it sound as if SVSU would first need to form a Compliance Department so that it can then be audited.

Going for jobs in East Lansing?
SVSU people be like "Can you have your article go straight to my LinkedIn?"
February 9th, 2019 at 9:35 AM ^
Aw, man...why couldn't Justin Fields have transferred there?
February 9th, 2019 at 9:55 AM ^
Go Lakers!

If you ain’t cheating, you ain’t tryin
February 9th, 2019 at 11:42 AM ^
With all that cheating you would think they could win a few more games.
I played there for 3 years in the late 70's. Maybe I can go back for my 4th year? I had a job offer and left because jobs were tough to find then.

Say it ain't so!!
