Five Former Wolverines on TV This Weekend as AAF Kicks Off
The Alliance of American Football kicks off tomorrow night with two games on CBS at 8 p.m. (Not sure if they're showing them regionally, or what, but both games are listed for 8 p.m. on CBS.) FIVE former Wolverines are on AAF rosters. The schedule:
SATURDAY, 8 p.m., CBS
Atlanta (Denard Robinson) vs. Orlando (De'Veon Smith) - Mike Vick is Denard's OC. Denard is expected to back up former Notre Dame RB Tarean Folston, but he better get some carries.
San Antonio (Matt Godin) vs. San Diego
SUNDAY, 4 p.m., CBS Sports Network
Memphis (Channing Stribling) vs. Birmingham (Ty Isaac) - Mike Singletary is the Memphis head coach
I have no life, so I will be watching.

No worries man. I love basketball, but I need an injection of a football-like thing into my veins.

Mike Vick as an OC? I'd bet his players will go hard for him, fighting and clawing like rabid dogs.
February 8th, 2019 at 9:36 AM ^
Too soon?
February 8th, 2019 at 12:00 PM ^
For Vick to have a high-paying career again? Yes, it is IMO.
February 8th, 2019 at 10:48 AM ^
If Denard dies in a weird, electrocution-style death in a few months, we know who did it.
February 8th, 2019 at 11:38 AM ^
Nah Mike would drown him in the water cooler. I'm going to hell...
February 8th, 2019 at 12:25 PM ^
Avatar checks out. When you see Vick down there, tell him my dog says "FU."
February 8th, 2019 at 12:33 PM ^
Haven't seen this before - but all three avatars above check out...
February 8th, 2019 at 1:21 PM ^
And now it's four!
February 8th, 2019 at 5:06 PM ^
Five??
February 8th, 2019 at 12:31 PM ^
I think you’re barking up the wrong tree
February 8th, 2019 at 9:41 AM ^
Lol Steve Spurrier is coach of Orlando. That should be fun to watch
February 8th, 2019 at 12:21 PM ^
AAF head coaches are a parade of has beens. Besides Spurrier there is Rick Neuheisel, Mike Singletary, Dennis Erickson, Mike Riley ( fresh off his star turn at Nebraska) and Mike Martz.
Lotta Mike's there. They should have gone all out for Mike Leach. He would have generated a bunch of interest.

What’s the story on this new league? I really don’t know anything about it.
February 8th, 2019 at 9:56 AM ^
I hadn't even heard of it until I saw this post. Here are the details.
Based on nothing more than the uniforms, I am now a fan of the San Diego Fleet and I will never cheer for the San Antonio Commanders. I grew up in ATL, so purple is... fine. Go Legends?
February 8th, 2019 at 10:37 AM ^
That's very helpful, thank you.
I think I love it. I'll have it on in the background if nothing else, assuming there aren't any B1G or really great NCAA games going. I don't watch the NHL or NBA until the late playoffs, so this fills a void for me. If Michigan players are on the field, the draw is even higher.
Looks like the new XFL starting next year will overshadow these guys? Same season.
February 8th, 2019 at 12:31 PM ^
So, you have Pep Hamilton in one league and Mike Riley in the other. You tell me which league overshadows the other.
February 8th, 2019 at 10:42 PM ^
Atlanta's unis remind me of the Michigan Panthers.
The Legends just need to adjust the shade toward plum
February 8th, 2019 at 10:44 AM ^
I'm more interested in this league.
February 8th, 2019 at 12:03 PM ^
Yes, absolutely! A professional, paid alternative to college ball. If you want a paycheck, play there. If you want a scholarship, go to college. This league needs to gain traction.

It's crazy Denard couldn't stick in the NFL. He was so talented. Brady Hoke should give him 50% of his wealth, because Denard is the only reason he managed to win 11 games that first year.
February 8th, 2019 at 11:24 AM ^
It's pretty easy to understand actually. Denard couldn't hold on to the football in the NFL, was a turnover machine. Forget it forever at running back in the NFL if you can't hold on to the ball.
I also don't think he naturally took to the contact like most NFL backs. He always seemed to take punishment more so than others.
February 8th, 2019 at 1:04 PM ^
I think he was more dynamic as a runner from the QB position because he could use the threat of a handoff, pitch, or throw to back off defenders. All he needed was an inch, and 'real' RB's don't get that inch unless a blocker makes it for them because everyone knows the RB is running with the ball. I think that is one of the reasons that plays into what you said about not being able to avoid contact. As the QB, he had play fakes and option tells he could employ to avoid the big hit near the LoS. Once in the open field, all bets were off on him taking a big hit.

Mike Vick OUT as Atlanta OC - maybe he is entering the portal
February 8th, 2019 at 10:47 AM ^
Really? I can't say I blame them. The offense hasn't scored a TD all year, so it's probably time for a change.
Still, it would be great to see him OC with Denard. You have to figure he'd put Denard in there for some wildcat snaps, right?
February 8th, 2019 at 10:07 AM ^
Thanks for this post!
February 8th, 2019 at 10:18 AM ^
Salt Lake Stallions all the way!!!
February 8th, 2019 at 10:45 AM ^
Have these games already been played, or did they have some kind of pre-season? There are what look like live action highlights in the commercials.
February 8th, 2019 at 11:50 AM ^
I have not done my AAF research, but pretty sure they had shared practices, or however they phrase that. That's probably what the pics are from. League starts tomorrow. Don't think there have been any official preseason games.
February 8th, 2019 at 12:07 PM ^
Will the games be streaming online?
February 8th, 2019 at 12:16 PM ^
Jeremy Gallon is playing with Denard. I miss that dude.
February 8th, 2019 at 1:32 PM ^
"Wide open's Gallon! They left him alone!"
February 8th, 2019 at 12:28 PM ^
Tarean Folston shouldn't be allowed to carry Denard's shoes - or his shoelaces - much less start in front of him.
Betting Denard will be in there during crunch time in the 2nd Half...
February 8th, 2019 at 1:02 PM ^
I ran into Denard at the Brown Jug a few months ago... Hopefully he's lost a ton of weight since then to be in shape for this game tomorrow.
February 8th, 2019 at 1:12 PM ^
so is this going to be a real league? Or more of the same dance pole bullshit that we saw with the XFL.
nothing against dance poles by the way.
February 8th, 2019 at 2:02 PM ^
"No life"? You kiddin me? This sounds pretty dang great. Unless it's like the XFL then eff it.
February 8th, 2019 at 2:20 PM ^
I like football so I hope one of these leagues catches on. I never understood the hate for more football. I miss my Grand Rapids Rampage.
February 8th, 2019 at 2:35 PM ^
I thought I read on here Gallon was playing for Atlanta too?
February 8th, 2019 at 7:55 PM ^
I will watch as well.
February 8th, 2019 at 10:49 PM ^
well this is awesome. I didn't know De'veon Smith wasn't in the NFL somewhere, so appreciate the update even more about our guys.
