Trey and Tim going to Dallas as part of Porzingis trade
Crazy times right now in the NBA, with Kristap Porzingas forcing himself out of New York in a matter of hours to Dallas, and apparently Trey and Tim will be shipped off with him.
January 31st, 2019 at 3:58 PM ^
wow, Dallas is going to be nasty in a year or two if KP can stay healthy
January 31st, 2019 at 6:43 PM ^
Really could be. I like how this Dallas team is shaping up. Wolverines, to boot!

Here are Some Pertinent Tweets:
Sources: Full players involved in Knicks/Mavericks deal:
— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) January 31, 2019
Kristaps Porzingis, Tim Hardaway Jr., Courtney Lee, Trey Burke to Dallas.
Dennis Smith Jr., Wes Matthews, DeAndre Jordan and likely first-round draft pick compensation to New York.
Sources: All-Star Kristaps Porzingis is planning to inform the Dallas Mavericks his intent is to sign the qualifying offer in restricted free agency this summer.
— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) January 31, 2019
New York has agreed with Dallas on trade that includes Kristaps Porzingis, Courtney Lee, Tim Hardaway Jr., for Wesley Matthews, Dennis Smith Jr. and DeAndre Jordan, league sources tell ESPN. Players and agents are being notified of particulars. Deal may include more draft assets.

The Knicks could be staring at $74.6M in projected cap space for next season. That would be good enough for 2 max slots.
— Bobby Marks (@BobbyMarks42) January 31, 2019
I would circle DeAndre Jordan and Wes Matthews as two potential buyout players to keep an eye on. Players need to be waived by March 1 to become playoff eligible.

what the fuck. I'm a lifelong knicks fan but fuck the knicks. God damn it.
January 31st, 2019 at 4:01 PM ^
Taking on expiring contracts to make a splash in free agency, maybe? Either way, they suck man.
January 31st, 2019 at 4:08 PM ^
Also a knicks fan, and hate losing KP, but he wanted out. Also, per a tweet I just read and am too lazy to embed:
"The Knicks could be staring at $74.6M in projected cap space for next season. That would be good enough for 2 max slots."
Granted - who the hell is gonna want to sign with them? If they get lucky and can draft Ja Morant/Zion/Barrett, maybe then they can lure something....but as long as Dolan runs the team, they're a miserable organization.
January 31st, 2019 at 4:14 PM ^
Draft Zion, and get Kevin Durant and you have the building blocks.
January 31st, 2019 at 4:16 PM ^
They could have done that with keeping KP is the thing. Or by trading him for, say, a good player or a high pick.
January 31st, 2019 at 5:48 PM ^
Good player? Most teams don't give up "good players" if they are in the playoff hunt or have a good nucleus. When a player holds you over a barrel, you get disgruntled players, expiring contracts, or draft picks. They got a little of both. I believe their hope was to keep him, and build around him, but he obviously gave them the opinion that he didn't want to be there anymore.
January 31st, 2019 at 4:16 PM ^
Sure - again would love for KD to come to NY, and there is definitely smoke out there that it's a possibility. I just can't see him leaving the Warriors. Unless, he and his good friend Kyrie have spoken ahead of time, and will join forces. Them two and two top ten picks..could be something.
January 31st, 2019 at 4:59 PM ^
He could very well stay with the Warriors, but most signs out there have had him leaving after this year
January 31st, 2019 at 4:59 PM ^
Knowing the Knicks, they'll get the 1st overall and will draft some obscure player from Europe instead of Zion. Also, why would Durant come to New York? He'll get paid the same amount of money from other teams that are much, much closer to being a contender than they are.
January 31st, 2019 at 4:14 PM ^
You can do good things with that kind of cap space, like adding the two giant contracts of Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva.
(Moral of the story: Don't just spend it on the next two buttholes in line)
February 1st, 2019 at 8:06 AM ^
Anhhhhh, what’s a messed up time!
January 31st, 2019 at 4:15 PM ^
Also a Knicks fan. You should be able to get more for KP than some cap clearance.
Dennis Smith Jr. sucks!
January 31st, 2019 at 4:21 PM ^
Zion/Durant/Kyrie?
January 31st, 2019 at 5:01 PM ^
No serious big time player is ever going to come to the Knicks now. They're a mess and the league should take the team away from Dolan.
I don't think ZIon will be Lebron but if any team can truly ruin his career or waste his talents its the Knicks. They'll turn him into late-career fat Shawn Kemp in no time.
January 31st, 2019 at 4:21 PM ^
It really must suck to be a Knicks fan. They remind me of Vinny's Cadillac stuck in the mud in My Cousin Vinny.
January 31st, 2019 at 7:10 PM ^
The Knicks are one of the most valuable franchises in sports yet consistently put out about as bad of a product as the Lions.
February 1st, 2019 at 10:52 AM ^
It's all because Knicks games are a way to show off your money. For fabulously wealthy NY people, particularly Wall Street and hedge fund types its a way to tell the rest of the city that you have too much money - so much that you can spend $1,500 for a ticket (plus $100+ for an authentic jersey) for your 12 year old kid who is now asleep in the seat next to you while the Knicks play Lebron and the Lakers (seriously - next time you watch a Knicks game see if they show a rich kid in $750 seats who is dead asleep - its not uncommon. I mean you can make the joke that the Knicks play put him to sleep but if I'm the kid's dad I wake his ass up, this is costing me serious money). It's like when the high-society snobs in Europe used to go to the opera just to be seen even though they didn't know shit about the opera.
And people like this are the reason the ticket prices never go down and why it still costs a normal person's month of rent to sit anywhere that would be considered decent seats. And this despite the fact that the Knicks are MISERABLE and now you can't even see Porzingis. These people have turned MSG into a mausoleum. An MSG full of real Knicks fans wouldn't put up with this: they'd be mercilessly booing Dolan, Fizdale and the front office every night. But they can't get in the door or are exiled to the upper deck. The old garden was BRUTAL.
/end rant/

If true, big Dallas fan now.
Pistons blow.

pistons are stuck in Purgatory for another 2-3 years thanks to SVG and his garbage contracts for reggie jackson and andre drummond

NY looking to clear space for FA?
I'm stunned that they're trading KP.
Meanwhile in Detroit...…..
January 31st, 2019 at 4:13 PM ^
Well, if this isn't a Knicks thing to do, I am not sure what is....
January 31st, 2019 at 4:15 PM ^
I like seeing Michigan players do well in the NBA, but I haven't watched a full NBA game since the last Piston's championship runs with Ben Wallace and that long armed dude Tayshawn Prince. ...and it was when the original bad boys made their run before that.
I did watch 5 minutes of a Pistons game after they got Blake Griffin.
January 31st, 2019 at 4:19 PM ^
Trey is doing well after struggling alot his first few years. Has defensive issues, but can score as we're used to. Tim is the better pro IMO, and can be a successful player a team where he's not the best player, but on the knicks, he was the highest paid player with a massive contract that was 100% him being overpaid.
January 31st, 2019 at 5:53 PM ^
Levert was on pace to be a contender for the most improved player before his injury he was averaging 20 ppg 5 rebounds and 4 assIsts i believe
January 31st, 2019 at 11:40 PM ^
It would be cool if Dallas added Levert and you had the old band back together. Maybe some Stauskas action too?
January 31st, 2019 at 8:04 PM ^
I think Tim really struggled with Porzingas being hurt. He's just not a primary scoring option, but I'll stand by him being a top tier 3rd option or a good 2nd. Mavericks made out like bandits.
January 31st, 2019 at 6:01 PM ^
Wow it took longer than normal for the obligatory i dont watch the NBA inside a NBA thread
January 31st, 2019 at 6:09 PM ^
That's an mgoblog classic right there.
January 31st, 2019 at 6:15 PM ^
Brian is often guilty of this as much as anyone; I feel like every NBA reference he makes is about Chauncey Billups, a man who hasn't played in an NBA game in going on 5 years.
January 31st, 2019 at 11:08 PM ^
I don't think he goes out of his way to make sure everyone knows that he doesn't care about the NBA; he just doesn't care much about it. That's fine, not everyone is going to have mindspace for every sport. It's different than telling everyone that you don't care about their sport in threads that are written about that sport.
FWIW I'm not the hugest NBA fan but I've flipped on tonight's Sixers-Warriors game and it's a blast.

KD and Kyrie come on down!
January 31st, 2019 at 4:17 PM ^
Not too familiar with either team, but a cursory glance suggests that Trey will be in a co-PG situation with JJ Barea, while THJ will be... stuck behind Luka Doncic in the old Wes Matthews spot. Am I reading this wrong?
January 31st, 2019 at 4:25 PM ^
I believe JJ is done for the year with an injury, so Trey should be starting. THJ will not be on the bench. He and Luka can switch between 2&3
January 31st, 2019 at 4:37 PM ^
Agreed. I think THJ will now assume his best possible position as the 3rd best player on a good team. He will benefit from having more open looks, spot up corner 3s, less having to create, and won't have to be as high volume as he was in NYK.
Trey will do well to have 3 high quality options to deal to as well. Both are best with more efficiency and less volume, which is pretty much a given with Luca and eventually KP.
THJ will make this work. Trey has 3 months to audition for this spot on a decent team. No more ups and downs. If he can prove himself efficient and consistent he'll stick in the league for years to come. If he can't capitalize on this opportunity his long-term NBA future is probably not likely.
January 31st, 2019 at 4:57 PM ^
Good stuff, thanks guys.
January 31st, 2019 at 6:14 PM ^
As noted below, Burke is the starting point guard, though Doncic handles the ball so much Burke will probably be more of a shooter and secondary ball handler than someone who initiates the offense extensively. Hardaway feels like a great fit here; he'll get some open looks, can help on defense a bit, and generally be the B+ NBA player he should be without being burdened with some of the "make a play" aspects his game isn't great at.
January 31st, 2019 at 4:25 PM ^
Another superstar leaving the East. NBA is so screwed up, players have way too much power. They are going to have to make some big changes in the next CBA.
January 31st, 2019 at 4:34 PM ^
I think players have the correct amount of power. The NBA has gotten it right.
If you draft a stud, you basically get 7 years with them guaranteed. That's more than enough time to get your franchise in order and win something.
January 31st, 2019 at 4:45 PM ^
Porzingis was only in his fourth season with the Knicks after they took him fourth overall and hasn't played this year.
January 31st, 2019 at 4:54 PM ^
You are assuming a player will sign a second contract with the team they are drafted by. There needs to be a bigger financial benefit for a player to re-up. Right now it's just 1 extra year and a little bit more annually. That number is going to need to be 50-100mil for players to really want to stay.
January 31st, 2019 at 5:05 PM ^
Aren't they restricted FA's though?
Edit: I goofed. But that is still 5 years in one place.
