BBall Recruiting - New 2020 Target/4* Dayten Holman
Add Dayten Holman to the 2020 board. Pretty obvious the staff is keeping tabs on several 2/3 types so that we're prepared for early entry.
Roughly a year ago when I posted my Tyrese Haliburton piece here (he was getting Michigan interest), a select few folks weren't enamored because I was literally the only service that had Tyrese ranked. Well, Holman certainly has some Tyrese Haliburton qualities to his game. He's 6'5ish with superb vision, a solid handle and is a really good finisher for a kid that isn't physically developed.
For context, Haliburton is probably among the top 10 freshman in college basketball at this point and will likely be entering draft boards very soon.

Good get probably

What is his interest in Michigan?
January 30th, 2019 at 12:21 PM ^
His interest in Michigan is certainly serious, but the staff isn't necessarily putting the full-court press on Holman. He appears to be in the 'let's see how many spots we're working with come April, then go out and evaluate during AAU, then come up with a hierarchy' group.

he looks to be one of the more talented guys we've landed

He needs to work on his hook shot.

Nice humble brag.
Haha, but thanks for all you do with basketball recruiting updates. You should talk to Brian and see if you could do something like once a week (or every other) and maybe get it on the main page that would be a little more in-depth during basketball season. (I know you do that on your website, but maybe a good cross over?)

This is much less a humble brag and more of a statement directed at the ignorance of the lunatic fringe that can only count stars.

This is exactly what it is. Essentially, I'm trying to be subtle and convey 'don't worry if the staff is recruiting a guy you've never heard of prior to his final season of AAU'. Not about me, it's about the fact that rankings are an inexact science (myself included) and that rankings prior to the Summer before the senior season are sporadic and often inaccurate. I mean you take a guy like Jalen Wilson for example, most here were pumped when he was a universal 5star type last year...….and I cautioned everyone that he wasn't that type of talent and there were some that were notably 'let down' that my statement appears to be true.
All that to say, look at the skillset displayed (and in the context - vs legit comp or not) on film if possible rather than the number assigned by a person who may, or may not, have seen said prospect live.
I like to think I'm pretty good at what I do in terms of evaluation, and I've certainly had my fair share of whiffs through the years. I think my resume stacks up pretty favorably vs that of the mainstream sites and believe me, I've had some evaluations that appear downright foolish in retrospect.

I mean if you were high on a player who everyone else had as a 3* and that player is now an NBA prospect as a freshman, I'm sure you'd be pumped about it too

Haliburton seems like a good player and is out playing his rankings, but I'm not sure what draft boards he is on.

He’s late 1st/early 2nd rd to both SI and Sam Vecenie

Love how composed he is in traffic. Doesn't get flustered or drop his head too much. Is able to keep leverage on his defender and either finish or find the open man.

I really like this kid. Is there any reason he's #61 in the composite, but unranked on 247? Seems odd since 247 is usually on top of their game
January 30th, 2019 at 12:19 PM ^
Probably haven't seen him live...…….as is the case with a good portion of underclassmen. Its the precise reason that rankings alone, especially prior to the Summer before the senior season, aren't the end-all, be-all.

Is there a chance Charles Matthews stays?
He isn't exactly playing his way into the NBA...
January 30th, 2019 at 1:23 PM ^
I would be very pessimistic.
1. The longer he doesn't get drafted, the less draftable he is. I think he leaves even if he can only make the second round after this year.
2. What the pros want and what helps Michigan on offense are different things. Matthews isn't going to be a high-option slasher in the NBA. But if his shooting is good enough (and it has definitely improved) he can be a 3-and-D guy that definitely can find a role in the NBA.
People are focusing on offense when they think of his NBA potential, but guys who make the NBA due to offense are superstars at lower levels. Even the backups. If Matthews is going to forge a career in the Association, it's going to be his defense and a side helping of shooting that gets it done.
3. Matthews won't make the decision based upon the consensus of a message board. He is quite capable of going even if it's not entirely rational, and I would guess that he will give it a shot.

Sam Veccine has him as the best wing defender in the draft and late first/early second.

Thanks. Was just getting ready to post this.

As a grad assistant? Im confused. Also the replies as well. Is this January 2018?
January 30th, 2019 at 1:46 PM ^
I mean I will take your rankings for what they are worth as you seem to have insight into being able to scout guys and rank them accordingly but Haliburton has a high score of 16 on the year (against Omaha) and isn't even listed on most big boards.
January 30th, 2019 at 2:16 PM ^
As I’m quite sure you already know, scoring isn’t everything (see X Simpson). To that end, Tyrese is shooting nearly 46% from distance on 3.5 attempts per game to go along with 4asst (20% asst rate) and 4rebs......as a freshman PG on a top 25 team surrounded by talent. And he’s a 6’5 PG with prototype NBA size/length.
SI has him as a first rd pick on their big board (#28) as of 1/5.

Pretty much mirrored my eval from the last 2 years.

How’s his character? Is he a Beilein type that lives with his married biological parents?
