Zavier vs Trey

Submitted by 1985sec4row23 on January 26th, 2019 at 7:44 AM

During the IU game last night, Fox put up a “3 Things to Know” about Zavier Simpson. One was that he wants a one-on-one game with Trey Burke. I think Trey would win, but I would pay money to watch that.

That got me thinking... wouldn’t it be great if there were a charity matchup of the 2012-2013 team vs the 2017-2018 team? They would definitely sell out Crisler. Kenpom gives the 2012-2013 team a 3pt advantage.

Have other schools ever done such a matchup of prior great teams?

I love Zavier, but I think I would go with the consensus national POY in this one. We all know that X would not back down and would bring his A game, though.  Michigan b-ball is the real deal.

Said after a 23 point road win against a ball blue blood that is still a top 30 team.  No concern trolling here!!

Personally, I think they just need to get through the dregs of the schedule and just start playing for something again...

ljohn - I don't know if you just need to have a drink and chill, or you badly need to get laid.  But your negativity is pathetic.

Lets try this: "We kicked the crap out of IU in Bloomington and are 19-1!  Hurray for our team!"

See - isnt that more fun.

Mike Damone, I’m not sure if you need to fuck off, or just fuck off harder, but speaking in frank terms about a team that I love and follow is not negativity.  Michigan needs to shoot the ball better to reach its goals, full stop.  It was a nice win, defense was outstanding.  The fact is that we have been laying brick for a month now.  I think this team has the potential to win the whole damn thing, but that isn’t going to happen unless they shoot the ball better.  If a nice win over a 3-6 conference team is what you want out of this team, than post your own muppets.  But we need the ball to start going through the net if we want more than that.

Most of the Board has moved on from the stage where only artificial inflation of our performance will do in terms of discussion.  I bet you had the cocoa butter out for Harbaugh’s pressers after the Wisconsin game where picking up a first down was about as much of a sure thing as open heart surgery.  How did that work out?  You represent the very small few who thinks that only Board circle jerks qualify as good discussion.  You are boring and short sighted.  So go back to tugging and I will discuss hoops with some posters who know something about it.

yo, face it.  this ain't the near 40% from 3 teams that we are used to under JB.  and it won't be.  they were 10 for 29 from 3 last nite; improving in the 2nd half.  i will take that 3 % all day every game from this team.  get that % in the later rounds of the BIG and/or big dance and this team will go far.  the D doesn't slump.

You are not a fan if you have anything to say other than “yay we won!” like a middle school soccer mom according to people on the board. Michigan played a very solid game last night but they miss a lot of bunnies and have shot very poorly from the 3 pt line. Poole is not a 45% 3pt shooter and he regressing back to about the 38-39% he normally is. Z is now again absolutely no threat to shoot anymore. Assembly hall is the worst arena in the big ten in my opinion as well.

Another negative "realist" weighing in...

It is January.  The BIG season is a grind and a journey.  No style points this time of year, especially on the road.  A win in Bloomington is huge - period, end of story.

"We need to shoot better" is not frank, intelligent discourse.  It is just being pathetically negative after a huge rout.

It's funny how some of you are so obsessed with protecting your internet reputation that you end up sounding like assholes at a time when the team is rolling.  This was our biggest win in Assembly Hall ever!

It's OK to admit that you got it wrong and the team exceeded your expectations.  No one's going to judge you negatively for saying that.  Maizen never figured this out and just became more and more defensive and hostile, leading to the first of many bannings.  Don't follow his example.

You think any critical commentary about the team is Maizen-like.  It isn’t.  My posts are not remotely close to Maizen.  Check the posting history if you want.  I am an ardent enthusiast of this team and program.  These clowns are just conflict seeking.  They are Fox News comments guys who use the Board to combat their own insecurity.

ijohnb, you’re capable of better than this. This is a thread about Z and Trey, a light discussion type thing, after a massive win on the road in a place Michigan almost never wins. The mood is good.

You bombed the team’s shooting, and then continued to double down.

Look, I have high expectations too, and I have at times been critical of the team. I said before the season started that spacing was a real issue because outside shooting would be in short supply. I’ve been critical of the offense even before the Wisco loss. I think, as you do, there is potential for the team to go all the way, and I am personally invested in that because if they make the FF I can see it in person and that’s a chance of a lifetime sportswise.

But your griping was totally out of place in this thread at this time and the people calling you on it are not just sunshine/rainbows types who think the team can do no wrong. They’re calling for balance. There are places to criticize and observe, but there is also real value in enjoying what goes well. Even HeiZen has been balancing his critiques with lots of positives. After all, the team is really good.

Enjoy the ride, man. This is fun.

I am enjoying the ride.  I made an observation that should be obvious to anybody that watched the game this morning because I didn’t comment last night and these clowns freaked out.  It was a terrible OP, I thought I could salvage it with some real hoops discussion.  You have read me enough to know that I am not concern troll like Maizen or AK, and frankly you are smart enough to see who is flaming and who isn’t on this thread.  For god sake I agreed that they are the “real deal” in the original post that got inexplicably bombed.  This response is just ridiculous group think and you should see through it.

Do they need to shoot better than they did against Minnesota?  Absolutely.  That game was awful.  But that was literally one game.

Michigan scored the their most points per possession against IU three weeks ago and then their second most against Northwestern two weeks ago.  So they haven't been laying bricks for a month.  They had two down games and you're freaking out.  It happens to teams.

Maybe not the best way of putting it, but this dude isn't totally wrong. This is a very hot and cold team shooting-wise. However, the D is so good that we are pretty much guaranteed to be in every single game.

This is just a different team than we've become accustomed to under Beilein. It doesn't have the flashy and exciting offense some of his previous teams did, but the defense is much, much better. Instead of laughing hysterically as we drain 3 after 3, we get to laugh hysterically as opposing offenses are turned into potatoes.

This year's team is as good as any Beilein has had if you ask me. They just win games in different ways than us fans are used to.

The 2013 tea gets a 3 point advantage if they were still a team, and were every bit as cohesive as that team was.  Put them all together today, and the current team beats them pretty easily...

I'd rather see a game between the 1989 national champions, and the Fab Five as freshmen.  Now that would be watchable!

Are you serious? Put them together now and 2013 wipes the floor with them. Tim Hardaway and healthy Caris Levert would each be one of the best 2-3 players currently in college basketball. Trey is considerably better now than he was in college. GRIII can stroke it from NBA range now. Stauskas has expanded his game.

Teske would be an advantage over current McGary, but I’d take current JMo over Davis. Overall, you’ve got basically an NBA team against the current team. 2013 guys would just shoot them off the floor.

Zavier is an elite defender and a great leader for this team, but I have to go with the man who was elected the consensus best player in America in a 1 v 1 matchup. I just don’t think Zavier would be able to keep up with Trey in a shootout. And Trey would be able to create his own shot enough to beat Zavier.

As far as a team on team matchup, that’s tough. If the 2018-19 team can go into that game, find its shot, and maintain the status quo on the defensive end, I’d say it’s no worse than a 50/ 50 tossup between the two teams. The 2018-19 team could definitely frustrate the 2012-13’s offensive flow enough to win. But if the 2018-19 team that played Wisconsin last week, or throughout mid-late December shows up, I think they make things interesting with the 2012-13 team because the defense is always consistent. But they just can’t keep up on offense, and the 2012-13 team had an assload of offensive firepower, so I think the 2012-13 team would slowly pull away in the second half and win the game by 10-15.

Go for two

January 26th, 2019 at 9:01 AM ^

The game would take an hour to get to 21, but Trey would win just because he can make any shot on the floor. Zavier doesn’t have the same number of shots he can make

Y'all are pretty funny. You're talking about playing 1 on 1 with an elite offensive player who, in the absence of any help defense scores at least 75% of the time against a kid who is, pretty much, restricted to shooting layups. I love defense but a 1 on 1 in a match like this is no contest. Here, recency bias has surely sucked any objectivity dry.
