Per Sam on WTKA it sounds like Pep is sticking around - NEGBANG
I guess at the end of yesterday's show Sam discussed that from what he was hearing from high school coaches and others it sounds like Pep is planning to stick around. He didn't find a seat in the in NFL/college head coaching round of musical chairs (or didn't find anyone willing to pay him $1.4M anyway).

Still has 2 years on his contract so prepare yourself for UM having the highest paid QB coach in all the land... and lackluster QB recruiting as well.

Don’t really care from an offensive standpoint as it appears he won’t be calling plays. It does suck to have basically dead weight from a recruiting standpoint when a younger guy could be out hitting it hard.

But how can he as QB coach be an effective recruiter of QBs when everyone he's recruiting is going to know that he's out the door as soon as he gets a decent job offer?

Weren't we just last week saying Cade McNamara was the #1 QB recruit on Alabama's board? A guy Pep recruited...
I understand not liking his play calling, but a guy who is even in consideration for NFL HC jobs is overqualified to be a college QB coach. I don't sign their paychecks, so I don't really care if the school is overpaying him.

Agree completely. He’s an overqualified and overpaid QB coach. I don’t like his coordination of the passing game and he’s no longer in charge of that. However he should do fine with his sole focus as the QBs coach. Plus Gattis can coach the WRs and groom McDaniels or Roundtree to be the next guy.

Remember how great Speight improved from Fisch to Pep? Me neither. Remember how prepared a RS freshmen Brandon Peters was to see the field under Pep? Me neither. Speight severely regressed under Pep's "overqualified" coaching and Pep couldn't get our most talented QB on the roster at the time to grasp the playbook after being in the system for 2 years. Meanwhile there are true freshmen QBs in the college football playoffs leading their teams every year.
If he was overqualified at any aspect of coaching then why won't anyone else hire him? He has been looking and interviewing for jobs the last 2 seasons and we are still stuck with him. We hired his replacement and still can't get rid of him. The only thing you got right is he is over paid.
You say he should do fine as the QB coach because...? He rode Andrew Luck's coat tails into people actually believing he was a good coach?

I agree, Fisch seemed to be much better as a QB coach. If I remember correctly he was instrumental in Rudock turning it around in '15, and then Speight over-performing for much of '16 according to insiders. Patterson was fine this last year, but I think he could've been even better with someone besides Pep.

I'm not sure what you are trying to say. Pep has no proof of developing or improving ANY quarterback. Tell me what credit you believe he has earned around here and why.
Speight - got way worse
Peters - never improved
O'Korn - never improved (and somehow was ahead of Peters on the depth chart...which was a shitty evaluation by the QB coach.)
Patterson - looked about the same quality as what I watched from his previous year tape.

Do you think he has value at any level? Do you think he is our worst coach? Ignoring salary, because that should be irrelevant to all of us.
He's been demoted to QB coach, with a HC who is actually the QB coach (especially now that he isn't going to be calling plays). He's our least important assistant now IMO, and to have a guy with NFL coordinator experience in that position is pretty damn good. He's done a good job recruiting QBs in his time here, even if you don't think he can develop them.

No, I do not believe he adds any value. His offensive philosophy is completely different than his new boss's philosophy. So keeping a round peg coach around to try fitting into our new square hole scheme is a bad plan. Just like when we had zone coach Frey and power coach Drevno on the same staff...it failed miserably.
Pep is not a strong recruiter and it's been a known fact that was never his strong suit. If you go by 247 rankings he is ranked the 470th recruiter. How can you say he has done good recruiting QBs when we have no idea how good/bad Milton, McNamara, or Johnson will be? All three are ranked lower than Peters and McCaffrey were so I assume you aren't basing his recruiting skills on pure rankings. And why couldn't we close on Harrison Bailey if Pep is so good at recruiting QBs? We led for him for close to a year.
He failed at being a NFL OC despite having Andrew Luck and got fired. You see that as a positive thing to have on our staff. I do not. He then was coaching on a team that went 1-15. And since then he has been dead weight on our staff.
Gattis should bring in someone who can actually help implement his brand new offense.

Speight hurt his back and that really derailed his progress. Can't blame that on Pep instead on the OL and their coaches.

As much as everyone else I’m glad Pep is out as passing game coordinator. But some of you are irrational with your hate for the man. Let’s get some context on Speight’s fall from grace. Number 1 he lost a senior laden offensive line. While that line wasn’t great in run blocking it was a good pass blocking line. The following season it turned into an historically bad O-line. Number 2 Speight lost all of his top receivers. They were replaced by true freshman. Not to mention he lost the most college ready one (Black) for the season in the second game. Number 3 and this ones underrated. Losing Deveon Smith as a pass blocker was devastating. None of our other backs were capable pass blockers that season. Then you throw a redshirt freshman into that mess and we saw the results.
Again. I’m not a Pep apologist. I’ve been calling for him to be replaced as passing game coordinator. But if we’re talking best possible coaching staff I’d say Gattis being WR/ OC, and Pep being QB coach is the best outcome.

If a guy voluntarily leaves, why would the school be obligated to pay the difference (unless specified in an individual contract?) If he's fired, that's a different story.

Because Michigan would prefer he leave. And whatever the new team pays him would be a reduction of what Michigan owes Pep. So, Pep is gone and Michigan has part of its two year obligation handled by someone else.

If Pep were to leave for another job, Michigan would not owe him anything. Michigan would have to fire him to owe him anything and that clearly is not happening. Merely hoping he leaves does not give UMich any sort of obligation to buy out his contract.

As QB coach/Associate Head Coach Pep went 1-15 with the Browns. He did almost as bad as humanly possible. He even had a future hall of fame LT while there. Your comparison sucks in an attempt to defend Pep's coaching abilities.

which is actually not true. His comments were more about the PR/media side of things rather than his coaching.
Taking 95 out of the equation (because the wheels fell off as soon as Modell announced the move) Belichik went 6-10, 7-9, 7-9 and 11-5. In 1994, the Browns defense was #1 in points against in the NFL (204 PA/ 12.8 per game). He was building something really good there, and everyone knows how great his staff was (Saban, Ferentz, Al Groh, Jim Schwartz, Pioli, Tannenbaum, Dimitroff, Ozzie). Belichik had some issues with the media (which people have figured out since then, the Cleveland NFL writers suuuuuuuuuuck , and he could've done some stuff differently from a PR perspective (namely, the Bernie Kosar departure). As a coach though, he was pretty good.
Keep in mind, the man who fired him also fired Paul Brown and cut Jim Brown. Also, he went bankrupt while owning an NFL franchise. Burn in hell, Art Modell.

The last 2 decisions of his head coaching career were starting Tyrod Taylor/Carlos Hyde over Baker Mayfield/Nick Chubb.

It seems like a stretch to say “nobody wants him.”
Michigan is paying him almost $1.5 million per year. How much of a pay cut do you think he’s willing to voluntarily take? If Michigan wanted to fire him, that forces his hand. But I’d think he’s perfectly content taking a smaller role and cashing in another $1.5 million instead of taking a $500k+ paycut to go be an OC elsewhere.
Just because he didn’t take a job elsewhere doesn’t mean nobody wanted him. It merely means the offer to leave didn’t outweigh his current situation.

I was noticing that. In many cases, the comment has already done the downvoting, so the marginal value in actually downvoting the comment just isn't sufficient.
That said, I guess I don't really care if he stays so long as it was indeed made clear that someone not named Pep Hamilton gets to be keeper of the offensive playbook.

It's easy to identify 5*s with gaudy stats. In any case, Pep may not be a great recruiter but he seems to be doing fine bringing in QBs. It might be easier for him now with promises of a new offense.

Yeah, say what you want about Pep/whatever but saying we’ve had lackluster QB recruiting (during all of Harbaugh’s tenure) is a terrible take. We’ve nabbed a solid blue chip QB prospect in every class AND have hit on 2/3 transfers. The only bad thing you could say about our QB recruiting is that we haven’t landed a Natty boi wunderkind like Trevor Lawrence.
