#5 Wrestling dominates MSU for 9th straight time
#5 Michigan Wrestling traveled to MSU tonight for the first B1G road dual in the Sean Bormet era.
Michigan has dominated this rivalry, winning 8 straight including a historic 36-point beatdown last season at Cliff Keen Arena.
Not much different today. MSU got out to a 4-0 lead to start after a win at 125 by one of their only ranked wrestlers, Rayvon Foley. Foley did not face Michigan's ranked 125er Drew Mattin (#16) tonight, instead facing Austin Assad.
Michigan took over from there, winning 6 straight matches and 8 of the 10 overall in the dual. These included a pin in 41 seconds by #1 133lb Stevan Micic and three consecutive major decision wins by Ben Lamanthia, Alec Pantaleo and Logan Massa.

If we can get everyone healthy, then we are slightly below OSU/PSU, on paper, talent wise. A team upset could happen if a few individual upsets happen during the duel.

We match up badly with PSU, that match will not be close. OSU will be more interesting. However, in tournaments we will not be close. PSU has to many guys competing to win the championships and guys that put up an insane amount of bonus points. I like where our wrestling program is going, but PSU is on a different level than the rest of the country.

Sort of 2 answers to that. Whether we're looking at things from the (1) team duel or (2) team tournament POV.
U-M would be a significant underdog to PSU/OSU in a team duel but it's not a blowout either.
Speaking more on PSU: U-M would get the wins at the 2 early weights and there would be some possible wins at later weights. I'd put the odds of a U-M victory in a team duel vs PSU at around 1-2%, but it's not completely unfathomable.
When it comes to a tournament though - that's where PSU is very very very very tough to beat. Too many wrestlers at the middle-higher weights who will rack up A TON of points. I'd be shocked if PSU isn't 2019 NCAA team Champion, and by a pretty wide margin.
2020 should be competitive for the NCAA Team Title though. PSU will fall off a bit - 2 of their wrestlers who rack up all those points are literally impossible to back-fill at the same level. So they will be more level with Iowa, OSU and OK State. I still think U-M is behind both PSU/OSU but the margin is smaller.

I agree with this. PSU has the #1 ranked wrestler nationally at 4 out of 5 weights in the middle of their lineup. Michigan has one guy ranked #1 (Micic) who is there kind of by default. Tough to beat PSU with those kind of horses who rack up bonus points against most competition (pins and large point differential wins).

MSU is just absolutely awful. Idk how they are so bad when they’re in a solid state for talent. It’s no guarantee they’re better than the MAC schools in a given year

Mattin would not have changed the score any way, Foley has majored him twice at least in their multiple meetings and I believe Foley majored Mattin this year (not 100% sure it was this season though). Good win, MSU is the Rutgers Football of Wrestling.
